Book excerpt: A soul-stirring novel about the bonds between mother and child and the redemption that comes with facing the past and letting it go. Thirty-two-year-old Jess Abbot has lost everything: her job, her apartment, and--most heart-wrenching--her eight-year-old son, Chance, to a tragic accident. Haunted by memories and grief, Jess packs what's left and heads for the small mountain town of Pine Lake, where she takes a position as caregiver to an eccentric old woman. A rumored clairvoyant, Lucy is strange but welcoming and immediately intuits Jess as a "loose end" in need of closure. But Jess isn't the only guest in Lucy's large Victorian home. There's also Star, a teenage runaway with a secret too painful to share. And the little boy with heart-shaped stones, who comes with a hope for reconciliation--and a warning. Soon Jess learns that she's not the only lost soul running from the ghosts of the past. She and Star have been brought together for a reason: to be saved by the very thing that destroyed them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Moses among the Idols: Mediators of the Divine in the Ancient Near East, Balogh simultaneously redefines one of the greatest figures in the history of religion and challenges the historically popular understanding of ancient Mesopotamian idols as the idle objects of antiquated faiths. Drawing on interdisciplinary research and methods of comparison, Balogh not only offers new insight into the lives of idols as active mediators between humanity and divinity, she also makes the case that when it comes to understanding the figure of Moses, Mesopotamian idols are the best analogy that the ancient Near East provides. This new understanding of Moses, idols, and the interplay between the two on the stage of history and within the biblical text has been made possible only with the recent publication of pertinent texts from ancient Mesopotamia. Drawing from the fields of Assyriology, biblical studies, comparative religion, and archaeology, Balogh identifies a problem with Moses’s status, and offers an unexpected solution to that problem. Moses among the Idols centers on the question: What is it that transforms Moses from an inadequate representative of Yahweh who is “uncircumcised of lips” to “god to Pharaoh” (Exodus 6:28-7:1)? In this moment, Moses undergoes a status change best understood through comparison with the induction ritual for ancient Mesopotamian idols as described in the texts of the Mīs Pȋ, “Washing” or “Purification of the Mouth.” This solution to the problem of Moses’s status explains not only his status change, but also why Moses radiates light after speaking with YHWH (Exod 34:29-35), and his peculiar relationship with YHWH and people of Israel. The comparative, interdisciplinary perspective provided by Balogh allows one to read these and other millennia-old interpretive issues anew, and to do so in a way that underscores the contribution of in-depth comparison to our understanding of ancient civilizations, texts, and intellectual frameworks.

Book excerpt: From one of the finest nature writers at work in America today-a lyrical, dramatic, illuminating tour of the hidden domain of wild animals. Whether recalling the experience of being chased through the Grand Canyon by a bighorn sheep, swimming with sharks off the coast of British Columbia, watching a peregrine falcon perform acrobatic stunts at 200 miles per hour, or engaging in a tense face-off with a mountain lion near a desert waterhole, Craig Childs captures the moment so vividly that he puts the reader in his boots. Each of the forty brief, compelling narratives in The Animal Dialogs focuses on the author's own encounter with a particular species and is replete with astonishing facts about the species' behavior, habitat, breeding, and lifespan. But the glory of each essay lies in Childs's ability to portray the sometimes brutal beauty of the wilderness, to capture the individual essence of wild creatures, to transport the reader beyond the human realm and deep inside the animal kingdom

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A tale of love, hardships, triumph, and success... It is the true story of Stephen Schutz and Susan Polis Schutz and their most unusual and often challenging ventures: Blue Mountain Arts greeting card company and bluemountain.com. Filled with practical business lessons... This story is a riveting account of the mistakes Susan and Stephen made, the solutions they designed, the successes they reached, and the personal and professional lessons they learned. This book gives you an excellent opportunity to learn from the Schutzes' experiences and insights. For anyone who has ever had a dream... In the late 1960's, Susan and Stephen were two idealistic, recent college graduates -- he, an artist with a Princeton Ph.D. in theoretical physics, and she, a teacher and a writer. One day, they decided to silk-screen posters that combined their art and poetry. They traveled around the country selling their posters while living out of a bright-yellow, pickup-truck camper. Thus, Blue Mountain Arts was born. About standing up and fighting for what you believe in... In the 1980's, Susan and Stephen designed the number-one-selling card line in the United States and found themselves battling one of America's largest corporations. Rather than watching their cards and company get destroyed, the Schutzes boldly went to court. The precedent-setting legal battle was dubbed by the media as the trial of David v. Goliath. An insider's look into the dot-com craze... In the late 1990's, Susan and Stephen, together with their eldest son, Jared, developed bluemountain.com -- a free Internet greeting card service that quickly grew into one of the world's most popular websites. A tender portrayal of love and life in an earlier, perhaps more innocent time... In a separate section, Susan shares her personal memories of growing up during the conservative 1950's in a small, country town. She speaks candidly about her college years, teaching, planning a commune, falling in love, and living amidst the political and philosophical turmoil of the 1960's. In heartfelt words, Susan describes her romantic relationship with Stephen and the births of their children. A business book with a soul... In sharp contrast to today's headlines of scandal and greed, this is the refreshing story of how the Schutzes followed their intuition, stayed true to their values and ideals, and created a flourishing company that has managed to stay ethical and successful at the same time. Better than fiction or fairy tale... You will laugh and cry and experience every emotion in between as you read the amazing story of Stephen and Susan Polis Schutz and Blue Mountain Arts. Book excerpt: NATIONAL BOOK AWARD LONGLIST NPR “BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR” SELECTION NEW YORK TIMES EDITORS’ CHOICE A virtuosic debut from a gifted violinist searching for a new mode of artistic becoming How does time shape consciousness and consciousness, time? Do we live in time, or does time live in us? And how does music, with its patterns of rhythm and harmony, inform our experience of time? Uncommon Measure explores these questions from the perspective of a young Korean American who dedicated herself to perfecting her art until performance anxiety forced her to give up the dream of becoming a concert solo violinist. Anchoring her story in illuminating research in neuroscience and quantum physics, Hodges traces her own passage through difficult family dynamics, prejudice, and enormous personal expectations to come to terms with the meaning of a life reimagined—one still shaped by classical music but moving toward the freedom of improvisation.

Book excerpt: Out Front the Following Sea is a historical epic of one woman's survival in a time when the wilderness is still wild, heresy is publicly punishable, and being independent is worse than scorned--it is a death sentence. At the onset of King William's War between French and English settlers in 1689 New England, Ruth Miner is accused of witchcraft for the murder of her parents and must flee the brutality of her town. She stows away on the ship of the only other person who knows her innocence: an audacious sailor--Owen--bound to her by years of attraction, friendship, and shared secrets. But when Owen's French ancestry finds him at odds with a violent English commander, the turmoil becomes life-or-death for the sailor, the headstrong Ruth, and the cast of Quakers, Pequot Indians, soldiers, highwaymen, and townsfolk dragged into the fray. Now Ruth must choose between sending Owen to the gallows or keeping her own neck from the noose.
