Book excerpt: Winner of the European Union Literature Prize, Peter Terrin's The Guard is a haunting novel of perceived oppression by the an omnipresent, but unknown, authority. In the near future, Harry and Michel live in the basement of a luxury apartment block, guarding the inhabitants. No one goes outside. The world might be at war, it might even have been plunged into nuclear winter. No one knows. But one weekend, all of the residents leave the block, one by one. All but the man on floor 29. Harry and Michel stick to their posts. All they know, all they can hope for, is that if they are vigilant, the "Organization" will reward them with a promotion to an elite cadre of security officers. But what if there were no one left to guard? Playing on our darkest fears, The Guard is a tautly observed novel by a writer of striking and stylish originality.

The system is rigged. For guys like Russell Boudreaux, football is the only way out of their small town. As the team’s varsity tight end, Rus has a singular goal: to get a scholarship and play on the national stage. But when his best friend is unfairly arrested and kicked off the team, Rus faces an impossible choice: speak up or live in fear. “Please rise for the national anthem.” Desperate for change, Rus kneels during the national anthem. In one instant, he falls from local stardom and becomes a target for hatred. But he’s not alone. With the help of his best friend and an unlikely ally, Rus will fight for his dreams, and for justice. "A gripping story about what it looks like when we demand equity, justice, and recognition of our own humanity." —Kalynn Bayron, author of Cinderella Is Dead

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the outbreak of war, twenty-year-old Francis Adams Donaldson enlisted in the 1st California Regiment (later known as the 71st Pennsylvania Volunteers) of the famous Philadelphia Brigade of the II Corps, Army of the Potomac. He fought at Ball’s Bluff (where he was captured) and participated in the Peninsula Campaign until he was wounded at the Battle of Fair Oaks. Upon his recovery, Donaldson reluctantly accepted promotion to a captaincy I the Corn Exchange Regiment (also known as the 118th Pennsylvania Volunteers), which served throughout its existence in the V Corps. In his new position, Donaldson participated in all the major campaigns and battles in the East through late 1863, including Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Bristoe Station, and Mine Run. Although Donaldson made no secret of his distaste for writing he consistently sent home some of his letters filled as many as fifty pages of writing paper. Nearly all of his letter were written in camp of while on active campaign, imparting a freshness and immediacy that is rarely seen. His comments on fellow soldiers—be they lowly privates of major generals—were pointed and unvarnished. In addition to writing ably and including his combat experience, Donaldson also revealed much about the seldom-mentioned factors of army life—the internal feuding, the backbiting, and the politicking that coursed through many Civil War regiments. For more than 125 years, Donaldson’s letters have lain virtually untouched in the Civil War Library and Museum of Philadelphia. J. Gregory Acken has painstakingly edited these remarkable collection, making these never-before-published letters available for the first time. Their detail and honesty will astonish and enthrall anyone who has ever taken an interest in the Civil War.

She was evacuated during the entire length of World War II to Ipswich, Wales and Marlow. As a teenager she pursued work opportunities available to a working class girl from London suburbs, including secretary at Peat Marwick and Mitchell, until marrying Russell Cleven Coile, an American, in 1951. Embarking on a sixty year love affair with Russell, she followed him around the world to France, Japan, Italy, and Brazil, then settled in northern California thirty years ago. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Organizational Behavior from the University of San Francisco. Under Two Flags chronicles not just her achievements in volunteer service to numerous organizations but how she expressed her values of social justice and combating discrimination. Her key priorities include family and friendships, extending beyond her three successful children.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I have received so many blessings in my life (the gift of faith, a long life, good health, an excellent education, many opportunities to serve others, two happy marriages with two outstanding wives, wonderful children and grandchildren, a successful career, prosperity, inspiring friends, opportunities to travel, and too many other gifts to list) that I thought I should celebrate them and share them with others in this book as I have done to a lesser extent in an earlier memoir entitled Close Calls, the Worlds First Unauthorized Autobiography. Reviewing my life I see the hand of God in everything that has happened to me and that I have done. Most important of all studying in Rome enhanced my love of the Church and my desire to stay close to it and follow its teachings and rules. The recent shocking increase in violence and unheard of forms of cruelty in the world have me praying many times each day. The title O Roma Nobilis comes from two lines of a hymn which is sung on the feast of Saints Peter and Paul (June 29). They read O Roma nobilis, quae duorum principum es consecrata glorioso sanguine. O noble Rome, you have been consecrated with the glorious blood of two princes.

Book excerpt: Focusing on the semiotics, poetics, and rhetoric of album covers, Coverscaping gives a serious study of this neglected art form. Working from the assumption that record sleeves may be found to represent a visual genre in its own right, the essays in this book engage in various ways with the analysis of what one might call the pictorial component of recorded music. The contributions, from scholars in many different fields, run the whole gamut from close readings of individual covers to more theoretical or philosophical explorations of the aesthetic nature and artistic value of album covers.
