Book Synopsis Color Change Mechanisms of Cold-Blooded Vertebrates by : H. Waring
Download or read book Color Change Mechanisms of Cold-Blooded Vertebrates written by H. Waring and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-09-03 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Color Change Mechanisms of Cold-Blooded Vertebrates focuses on color change in vertebrates and its relation to endocrine control. The book first tackles physiological color changes in amphibians, elasmobranchs, teleosts, and cyclostomes. Topics include description of responses, nonvisual response, criticisms of the two-hormone hypothesis as applied to amphibians and elasmobranchs, and summary of teleost color change mechanisms. The publication then elaborates on physiological color changes in reptiles and biological assay of melanin-dispersing hormones, as well as generalities about reptilian color change, general statement on biological assay, and theoretical considerations. The manuscript ponders on the chemistry of melanin-dispersing hormones, mechanism of the melanophore, and actions of melanin-dispersing hormones on functions other than color change. Discussions focus on glandular origin of melanin-dispersing hormones, energy sources for melanin movement, and metabolism. The text is highly recommended for readers interested in color change in vertebrates.

Book Synopsis Biology of the Integument by : J. Bereiter-Hahn
Download or read book Biology of the Integument written by J. Bereiter-Hahn and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 870 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The integument plays an important role in the survival of meta zoans by separating and protecting them from a hostile environ ment. Its function ranges from protection against injury and in fection, participation in the regulation of body temperature and water balance, to respiratory activity, monitoring of the environ ment and production of signals related to behaviour. All these result from specific structural, biochemical and physiological properties of intra-and extracellular components of the integu ment. Thus its characterization can be best accomplished by a multidisciplinary approach with authors specialized in different fields of science. This multi-author book, in two volumes, provides an up-to date survey of the literature. The first volume deals with the integument of invertebrates, the second with that of vertebrates, both organized primarily on a phylum basis. As the level of knowledge on the integument of phyla differs considerably, the information provided is correspondingly either limited or con densed. For some of the smaller groups of invertebrates little information is available, as often only a few electron micrographs are to be found in the literature ; on the other hand, from the large body of knowledge existing for vertebrates, particularly for mammals, no complete overview can be provided, but publica tions giving access to further information have been reviewed critically.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first five International Pigment Cell Conferences have all been held in U.S.A., from 1948 to 1961. The late MYRON GORDON (1899-1959), was one of their initiators and was the person who was able to give a skillful continuity to these Conferences which have permitted a gathering together of the multiple aspects of investigations in pigment cell biology, including the clinical problem of melanomas. During the International Cancer Congress in Moscow, in 1962, mem bers of the Oncological Research Institute in Sofia offered to organize the Sixth Pigment Cell Conference. Because of their interest and experience in the field of experimental and human melanomas, this seemed highly appropriate. The International Union Against Cancer agreed to sponsor the Conference, since one of the final goals of studies in pigment cell bio logy is certainly the control of the neoplastic deviation of the melanocyte. Thus, for the first time, the Pigment Cell Conference was held in Europe. After discussions with various investigators, the Program Com mittee decided to limit somewhat the chemical and biological part of the program in order to allow relatively more space to electron microscopy of the melanocyte, biology of experimental melanomas, and epidemiology and clinical aspects of human melanomas.

Book Synopsis Comparative Physiology and Evolution of the Autonomic Nervous System by : Charlotte B. Nilsson
Download or read book Comparative Physiology and Evolution of the Autonomic Nervous System written by Charlotte B. Nilsson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-09-28 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comparative Physiology and Evolution of the Autonomic Nervous System, the fourth volume in the Autonomic Nervous System series, is an up-to-date account of the comparative physiology and functional anatomy of the autonomic nervous system, with an emphasis on non-mammalian vertebrates. The book starts with an overview of the field and then discusses both 'classical' (adrenergic and cholinergic) non-adrenergic and non-cholinergic (NANC) types of neurotransmission. The account is then further developed by an examination of the autonomic nervous control of specific systems and organs. Readership: Researchers, working professionals, undergraduates and graduates working in neurology, cardiology, internal medicine, clinical pharmacology, and hypertension.
Book Synopsis Neuroendocrinology by : Luciano Martini
Download or read book Neuroendocrinology written by Luciano Martini and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 798 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neuroendocrinology, Volume II, is the second in a two-volume treatise designed to provide a survey of all aspects of the rapidly expanding science of neuroendocrinology. Only in recent years have the relations between the nervous system and the endocrine system come under intensive scrutiny, but their interactions have already been shown to be multiple and diverse. This diversity is reflected in the range of subjects covered. There are chapters on neural control of endocrine function; the effects of hormones on the brain; brain-endocrine interrelations during various phases of development; and the comparative aspects of neuroendocrine integration. The relation of brain chemistry to endocrine function, the effect of drugs on neuroendocrine mechanisms, and the new discipline of clinical neuroendocrinology have also been considered. Not only neurophysiologists and endocrinologists, but pharmacologists, zoologists, biochemists, psychologists, and those in clinical medicine will find the treatise of interest. Parts of neuroendocrinology have been discussed in other works, but this is the first treatise in which an attempt has been made to cover all ramifications of neuroendocrinology. This book can be used both as a text for advanced students and as a reference source.

Book Synopsis Physiology of the Amphibia by : Brian Lofts
Download or read book Physiology of the Amphibia written by Brian Lofts and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 663 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physiology of the Amphibia, Volume III consists of 10 chapters beginning with a discussion on amphibian color changes and the various aspects of the molting cycle. Possessing a skin more suitable for life in the water, the amphibians need to prevent excessive water loss from their body to the environment; hence, an additional mechanism for reducing the hazards of desiccation in many anuran species is described. This book also tackles the physiology of amphibian cells in culture. Furthermore, the animals' nervous, visual, and auditory systems; their immunity; and metamorphosis are explained in this text. This reference will be useful to general biologists and to students with interests in animal physiology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physiology of the Amphibia, Volume II focuses on the various aspects of amphibian reproduction, both physiological and behavioral, and the interrelationship between these mechanisms and the environment. It then describes the cytophysiology of the amphibian adenohypophysis, as well as their reproductive organs and associated sexual structures. It also discusses the physiology of the process of yolk formation, vitellogenesis. The reproductive and courtship patterns and intersexuality among amphibians are also described. This book will be useful to general biologists as a reference source and to students with interests in animal physiology.
