Book Synopsis On Colonialism (Classic Reprint) by : Karl Marx
Download or read book On Colonialism (Classic Reprint) written by Karl Marx and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Colonialism In Shanghai the terror is extreme. Gold has advanced upwand of 25 per cent, being eagerly sought for hoarding; silver has so far disappeared that none could be obtained to pay the China dues on the British vessels requiring port clearance; and in consequence of which Mr. Alcock has consented to become responsible to the Chinese authorities for the payment of these dues, on receipt of East India Company's bills, or other approved securities. The scar city oi the' precious metals is one of the most unfavourable features, when viewed in reference to the immediate future of commerce, as this abstraction occurs precisely at that period when their use is most needed, to enable the tea and silk buyers to go into the interior and effect their purchases, for which a large portion of bullion is paid in advance, to enable the producers to carry on their operations. At this period of the year it is usual to begin making arrangements for the new teas, whereas at present nothing is talked of but the means of protecting person and property, all transactions being at a stand. If the means are not applied to secure the leaves in April and May, the early crop, which includes all the finer descriptions, both of black and green teas, will be as much lost as unreaped wheat at Christmas. Book Synopsis Colonialism and the Emergence of Science Fiction by : John Rieder
Download or read book Colonialism and the Emergence of Science Fiction written by John Rieder and published by Wesleyan University Press. This book was released on 2013-01-01 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This groundbreaking study explores science fiction's complex relationship with colonialism and imperialism. In the first full-length study of the subject, John Rieder argues that the history and ideology of colonialism are crucial components of science fiction's displaced references to history and its engagement in ideological production. With original scholarship and theoretical sophistication, he offers new and innovative readings of both acknowledged classics and rediscovered gems. Rider proposes that the basic texture of much science fiction—in particular its vacillation between fantasies of discovery and visions of disaster—is established by the profound ambivalence that pervades colonial accounts of the exotic “other.” Includes discussion of works by Edwin A. Abbott, Edward Bellamy, Edgar Rice Burroughs, John W. Campbell, George Tomkyns Chesney, Arthur Conan Doyle, H. Rider Haggard, Edmond Hamilton, W. H. Hudson, Richard Jefferies, Henry Kuttner, Alun Llewellyn, Jack London, A. Merritt, Catherine L. Moore, William Morris, Garrett P. Serviss, Mary Shelley, Olaf Stapledon, and H. G. Wells.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from British Imperialism The great increase of strength received by the British Empire in quite recent times, and the other changes which it has undergone, have hitherto been very inadequately realised even by those nations whose interests are most affected by them. The increase of territory and population following on the South African War, and the development of the political organisa tion (especially noticeable in the formation of the Commonwealth of Australia) are not the only signs of these changes. The full annual reports Of the trading and planting companies have not been available. Time was lacking for a detailed study Of German newspapers for the bearing of 'public Opinion' on colonial matters. I expect criticism from some readers for my failure to arrive at a doctrinaire conclusion about capitalism and imperialism. TO such critics I can honestly say that the material presented here ought to be Of help to those more capable than I in the formulation of such theories. Book Synopsis Studies in Colonial Nationalism (Classic Reprint) by : Richard Jebb
Download or read book Studies in Colonial Nationalism (Classic Reprint) written by Richard Jebb and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Colonial Nationalism Analysing the conditions of the problem, there are two broad features common to Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa. The first is that all four countries are travelling the same road - the road from the colonial to the national status. But they are severally at different stages of the journey, moving for the time being in the order named; and the progress of each is accelerated or retarded by varying circumstances, ethnological, geographical, or social, which are different for each. The other common feature is that the development of national consciousness is a process of internal friction, the old order slowly and painfully yielding to the new. It is visionary to imagine that vital common measures can be devised until the last of the procession is further on the road to national maturity. Meanwhile it is the part of imperial statesmanship to note the unalterable direcg'on of the road, to remember the internal friction, and to realize that, if concentration is desirable, it is easier to quicken the followers than to turn back the leaders. Book Synopsis Culture and Imperialism by : Edward W. Said
Download or read book Culture and Imperialism written by Edward W. Said and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2012-10-24 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A landmark work from the author of Orientalism that explores the long-overlooked connections between the Western imperial endeavor and the culture that both reflected and reinforced it. In the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, as the Western powers built empires that stretched from Australia to the West Indies, Western artists created masterpieces ranging from Mansfield Park to Heart of Darkness and Aida. Yet most cultural critics continue to see these phenomena as separate. Edward Said looks at these works alongside those of such writers as W. B. Yeats, Chinua Achebe, and Salman Rushdie to show how subject peoples produced their own vigorous cultures of opposition and resistance. Vast in scope and stunning in its erudition, Culture and Imperialism reopens the dialogue between literature and the life of its time.
