This book provides a wealth of information gleaned over a long and active lifetime. It will appeal greatly to the country lover and sportsman and prove an amusing social document for students of that era with its historical anecdotes and lively style. The book's two hundred and twenty-six pages contain valuable information on: How to Allure and Catch all Vermin. Rat Catching Secrets. Managing Horses and Dogs. Rearing Pheasants. Fowling Pieces, Rifles and Muskets. Remarks on Rifle Shooting. Pointers and Setters. Preventing Partridge and Pheasant Poachers. Catching Flocks of Wood Pigeons. Catching Waterfowl. The debate over the Second Amendment has unveiled new and useful information about the history of guns and their possession and meaning in the United States of America. History itself has become contested ground in the debate about firearms and in the interpretation of the Second Amendment to the Constitution of the United States. Specifically this collection of essays gives special attention to the important and often overlooked dimension of the applications of history in the law. These essays illustrate the complexity of the firearms debate, the relation between law and behavior, and the role that historical knowledge plays in contemporary debates over law and policy. Wide-ranging and stimulating The Right to Bear Arms is bound to captivate both historians and casual readers alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Botany Bay, True Tales of Early Australia is a collection of short stories that depict life in early Australia during its days of being a colony for transported convicts. Excerpt: "Johnny Crook, after examining the rail very minutely, pointed to some stains and exclaimed, "white man's blood!" Then, leaping over the fence, he examined the brushwood and the ground adjacent. Ere long he started off, beckoning Mr. Cox and his attendants to follow. For more than three--quarters of a mile, over forest land, the savage tracked the footsteps of a man, and something trailed along the earth (fortunately, so far as the ends of justice were concerned, no rain had fallen during the period alluded to by old David, namely, fifteen months. One heavy shower would have obliterated all these tracks, most probably, and, curious enough, that very night there was a frightful downfall--such a downfall as had not been known for many a long year) until they came to a pond, or water-hole, upon the surface of which was a bluish scum."

This book was released on 2010 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This work deals with Britain's last throw of the dice in the American Revolutionary War. Comprising six volumes, it contains a fully edited transcript of almost all the papers that were written by, or came before, Lord Cornwallis during his command in the south. The papers cover the siege of Charlestown, his tenuous occupation of South Carolina and Georgia, the autumn, winter and Virginia campaigns, and ultimately his capitulation at Yorktown. Among a mass of matters that are also covered are Craig's occupation of Wilmington, his operations there, the Spanish threat to East Florida, and the eventual collapse of British authority elsewhere in the south. The papers are arranged in 14 parts and 68 chapters. In view of the numberless inaccuracies published about the war most parts begin with an introductory chapter, the purpose of which is to present the papers in an accurate, balanced and dispassionate way. Whether such chapters are seen to succeed will, inevitably, depend to a degree on the perspective from which the papers are viewed. The papers open the door to re-evaluating certain aspects of the war. The introductory chapters very briefly provide pointers besides addressing certain important considerations that have long gone by default"--Publisher's description.

Book excerpt: "Armies of British Loyalists and Patriot militiamen fought the Battle of Kings Mountain, located about eight miles northeast of modern day Blacksburg, South Carolina, on the afternoon of 7 October 1780. Insignificant in terms of size, the Patriot victory at Kings Mountain upset the British attempts to gain permanent control of the Carolinas-and by extension fundamentally changed the course of the war in the South. The strategic and operational implications tied to the Kings Mountain battle will provide military professionals much to ponder about the nature of irregular conflict and counterinsurgency in the modern era. When viewed within the context of the British strategic goals for the Southern Campaign, the Patriot victory at Kings Mountain destroyed the British center of gravity, a well-organized Loyalist militia capable of securing South Carolina in the absence of British regulars. Not only did the disaster of Kings Mountain demoralize the surviving Loyalists, but it convinced the British ground commander, Lord Charles Cornwallis, to curtail attempts to recruit additional Loyalist militia regiments. Absent an effective Loyalist militia, the British did not have the manpower to both pacify South Carolina and continue the process of conquering the vast territory that lay between Charleston and the Chesapeake. By the time Cornwallis attempted to recruit fresh Loyalist militiamen in the time period before and after the Guilford Courthouse battle, few Tories were willing to risk their lives and property in service to the King"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Assembled from a series of newspaper articles first published in the newspaper *Morning Chronicle* throughout the 1840s, this exhaustively researched, richly detailed survey of the teeming street denizens of London is a work both of groundbreaking sociology and salacious voyeurism. In an 1850 review of the survey, just prior to its initial book publication, William Makepeace Thackeray called it "tale of terror and wonder" offering "a picture of human life so wonderful, so awful, so piteous and pathetic, so exciting and terrible, that readers of romances own they never read anything like to it." Delving into the world of the London "street-folk"-the buyers and sellers of goods, performers, artisans, laborers and others-this extraordinary work inspired the socially conscious fiction of Charles Dickens in the 19th century as well as the urban fantasy of Neil Gaiman in the late 20th. Volume I explores the lives of: the "wandering tribes" costermongers sellers of fish, fruits and vegetables sellers of books and stationery sellers of manufactured goods women and children on the streets and more. English journalist HENRY MAYHEW (1812-1887) was a founder and editor of the satirical magazine *Punch.*

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does it mean when a fictional hero takes a journey?. Shares a meal? Gets drenched in a sudden rain shower? Often, there is much more going on in a novel or poem than is readily visible on the surface—a symbol, maybe, that remains elusive, or an unexpected twist on a character—and there's that sneaking suspicion that the deeper meaning of a literary text keeps escaping you. In this practical and amusing guide to literature, Thomas C. Foster shows how easy and gratifying it is to unlock those hidden truths, and to discover a world where a road leads to a quest; a shared meal may signify a communion; and rain, whether cleansing or destructive, is never just rain. Ranging from major themes to literary models, narrative devices, and form, How to Read Literature Like a Professor is the perfect companion for making your reading experience more enriching, satisfying, and fun.
