Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Religious Education of Adolescents In selecting and preparing the material for this little volume, the author has intentionally avoided the exclusively academic and scholastic point of View. The needs Of parents, teachers and other adult leaders, who are facing practical problems, have been kept in mind. Indeed, many of the paragraphs were written for the express purpose Of answering questions which had been asked by per sons who were facing perplexing situations in their own homes or schools. During the past three years, the author has delivered several short courses of lectures in con munity schools Of religious education and in sum mer schools on such subjects as: The Psychology Of Adolescent Boyhood, The Religious Nurture Of Adolescent Young People, The Psychology of Religion, and Principles and Methods Of Recrea tional Leadership. As collateral reading in these courses, one monograph Of a series Of pamphlets formerly published by the American Institute of Child Life Of Philadelphia: The Government Of Adolescent Young People, prepared by William Byron Forbush, was used. The demand for it soon exhausted the third edition. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religious Education in the Church A few years ago there appeared a striking essay entitled "Heckling the Church." It called attention to the fact that every person felt fully qualified to sit in judgment on the church, and to exercise freely his gifts of criticism in this direction. Captious criticism is annoying, but, for the church it is better to be annoyed than to be ignored. If the latter should come to pass the case would be serious indeed. The emphasis of several generations on the primacy of material things has led to the popular assumption that we do not need spiritual institutions. Now we have a renaissance of the spiritual, under the stress of a world agony. But there is a tendency to feel that the spiritual is so implicit in all things that it does not need explicit expression anywhere. Men ask whether a spiritual age needs a special religious institution. Further, various social agencies have taken over many of the activities of the churches. Men are asking whether in the social organization of to-day there remains any special task or place for the church. These are the questions the present-day church must face. They are not essentially hostile questions. They are expressed by persons of serious minds. They rise within the church rather than without. They are not the questionings of an anti-religious spirit. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religious Education and Democracy The present world situation compels a serious reexamination of the foundations of democracy. Especially does it necessitate a consideration of educational processes and materials. In the haste to achieve efficiency may it not be that some indispensable values have been sacrificed? The words of Jesus sound again with a new emphasis: "What shall it profit a man. if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?" The same applies to a nation as well as to the individual. "Has democracy failed?" men are asking to-day. Has Christianity failed? These have not failed, but, as one recent writer has said, they have been found difficult and have not yet been fairly tried. Under the conviction that a fresh study of the relation of religious education to democracy would just now be especially timely, the present writer prepared for the Commission on Christian Education of the Federal Council of the Churches of Christ in America a Survey of Week-day Religious Instruction. In this task many valuable suggestions and criticisms were made by the members of the Commission. The writer would express his peculiar obligation to the chairman, Dean W. F. Tillett, D.D.; the secretary, the Rev. H. H. Meyer, D.D.; and to the chairman of the special subcommittee appointed for this purpose, Professor W. J. Thompson, D.D. This Survey, which appeared as a part of the Quadrennial Report of the Commission, has been carefully revised and is now contained in Part I of the present volume. First article. I believe in God. We must believe explicitly that there is one God, and that in this God there are three persons, each of whom is God. That there are not three gods, but only one God. That the three persons are called the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religious Education and for the Healing of the Church It seems strange that Luther in neither of his treatises on the establishment of public schools speaks specifically of the religious education of the child. His catechisms were not written for the school, but for 'pastors and teachers, ' as the preface to the Small Catechism says, and for 'house-fathers, ' as the headings of the various parts say. Even Gerhard looks to the ministers and not to the schools for the religious training of the children. Furthermore, Luther nowhere tells how instruction is to help the religious development of the child. On one point he is very clear: no one can be compelled to believe. (buchwald, 3, The Catechism itself is to teach and the children are to learn from it what is right and what is wrong among those with whom the children intend to dwell and live. For he who wants to live in a city must know and observe the law of the city whose benefits he desires to enjoy, whether he believe or be at heart a rascal. (ibid. The translation of this passage given in the Church Book and in the English Book of Concord is not accurate, but attempts to avoid a theological, and partly a linguistic difficulty. The Latin translation should have made both clear.) About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Relations Between Religion and Academic Education The first of these is that which is the primary object, and of chief importance the other is subordinate and subsidiary. We need not, however, anxiously distinguish between these objects, as practically they are inseparable. For, on, the one hand, the proper development and culture of man's rational nature can take place only on the condition and by means of that instruc tion, which lays down the elements of science in scientific form in the mind of the student, as the foundation-stones on which he is to rear up the superstructure of his future knowl edge; and, on the other hand, such a method of instruction cannot be pursued, without at the same time effecting the mental development and discipline which are sought.
