Book excerpt: This report presents the results of a Phase I SBIR project to calculate properties of concentrated colloidal suspensions using computer simulation methods. Equilibrium and nonequilibrium Brownian dynamics (NEBD) simulations were performed for concentrated aqueous and nonaqueous colloidal suspensions. These are the first calculations of suspension shear viscosity based on NEBD simulations. Stability estimates were also made for sterically stabilized nonaqueous suspensions. The NEBD calculations provide quantitative evidence for the disturbance of the equilibrium structure of the dispersions by shearing. Shear viscosities have been calculated as a function of shear rate and particle volume fraction. Good agreement was obtained with experimental viscosities for comparable systems. The simulation results are sensitive to the type, strength and range of the potential interactions used to describe the dispersion. These results demonstrate that the NEBD technique is capable of describing the essential features of sheared suspension behavior. They also establish the feasibility and desirability of using NEBD simulation methods as a predictive engineering tool for the design of slurries. Keywords: Colloidal dynamics, Rheology, Fuel slurries, Computer simulation.

Book Synopsis Theory and Applications of Colloidal Suspension Rheology by : Norman J. Wagner
Download or read book Theory and Applications of Colloidal Suspension Rheology written by Norman J. Wagner and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2021-04-15 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An essential text on practical application, theory and simulation, written by an international coalition of experts in the field and edited by the authors of Colloidal Suspension Rheology. This up-to-date work builds upon the prior work as a valuable guide to formulation and processing, as well as fundamental rheology of colloidal suspensions. Thematically, theory and simulation are connected to industrial application by consideration of colloidal interactions, particle properties, and suspension microstructure. Important classes of model suspensions including gels, glasses and soft particles are covered so as to develop a deeper understanding of industrial systems ranging from carbon black slurries, paints and coatings, asphalt, cement, and mine tailings, to natural suspensions such as biocolloids, protein solutions, and blood. Systematically presenting the established facts in this multidisciplinary field, this book is the perfect aid for academic researchers, graduate students, and industrial practitioners alike.

This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Secondly, the stability and rheology of the single walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) suspensions prepared by interfacial trapping method is examined and compared to a conventional method of ultracentrifugation. Since the rheological properties are sensitive to the suspension microstructure, the change of rheological properties, such as viscosity, can be employed as a systematic standard of stability. The steady shear viscosities have been measured and compared as a function of shear rate and aging time of the suspension. Also, the visual states of the suspension have been observed. The rheology of the SWNT suspensions depends on the preparation of surfactant solution. Also, the interfacial trapping method generated similar behaviors to the SWNT suspension prepared by the ultracentrifugation method. Finally, the dynamics of non-colloidal spheres in oscillatory shear flow is studied by experiment and simulation. Two distinct scales are observed for the development of the rheology in time. At small total strains, a rapid decay of ... is observed, while ... and ... remain constant. However, the evolution of the complex viscosity is observed over large total strains, indicating microstructural changes over long times. Also, this suspension system shows a non-monotonic dependence of viscosity on strain amplitude. Stokesian dynamics simulations are used to correlate the rheology and microstructures.

Book Synopsis SRC-water Slurry Rheology. Final Technical Report by :
Download or read book SRC-water Slurry Rheology. Final Technical Report written by and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: SRC-water slurries exhibit properties that qualify them for use as fuel in conventional oil-fired combustion facilities. However, to date, the slurries tested have shown storage instability, which requires constant agitation and recirculation to avoid sedimentation in the storage tanks. High viscosities of the material being evaluated hampered the test performance. A program was instituted to better understand the variables responsible for viscosity and static stability of these slurries. Effective additives and concentrations were determined. This report presents laboratory data demonstrating that solid concentration, particle size distribution, additive concentration, and slurry preparation technique influence the viscosity and stability characteristics of an SRC-water slurry. 7 references, 12 figures, 11 tables.

Book excerpt: Computational studies have emerged as a key class of scientific approached to solving different problems of interest in the past few decades. Dissipative Particle Dynamics, DPD, a mesoscale simulation technique based on Molecular Dynamics has been established as a powerful technique in recovering a wide range of physical and chemical processes. Nevertheless, absence of robust bridge between the computational parameters to the physical characteristics of a system has limited applications of DPD. Thus in the second chapter of this dissertation (after a brief introduction and organizational guideline in chapter 1) a systematic study will be presented, providing several routes for setting the simulation parameters based on the real experimental measures. Although computational and theoretical works have always been a crucial areas of research in the rheology society, DPD has not been employed in rheological studies. This is mainly due to the fact that a step-by-step guideline does not exist for rheological measurements in DPD. Another reason for this lack of success in rheological community is that the built-in thermostat in DPD is not capable of providing a stable control over the thermodynamics of the system under flow conditions. Thus, firstly in chapter 3 different methods of viscosity measurement and rheological studies will be discussed in detail, and consequently in chapter 4 a novel thermostat is presented to modify the natural shortcomings of DPD under flow. For decades now, scientists across different disciplines have attempted at identifying the nature of versatile rheological response of colloidal suspensions. Exhibiting Newtonian behavior at very low, shear-thinning at intermediate, and shear-thickening at high flow rates in dense colloidal suspensions exemplifies a broad range of rheological regimes within a simple solid-liquid system. Despite numerous experimental and computational efforts in explaining the underlying mechanism of these behavior, there is still an ongoing debate in the scientific community on the subject. Hence, in final chapter a comprehensive study on rheology of colloidal suspensions (including a complete flow curve, normal stress measurements and microstructural evolutions) is presented, based on the results and foundations in prior chapters as well as in the literature.
