Book excerpt: Electron transfer reactions are of great importance to nearly every subdiscipline of chemistry. The simple transfer of a single electron has been shown repeatedly to be a common activating mode for organic, inorganic, and biological molecules, and the very ubiquity of such reactions has guaranteed that their investigation would involve the most fundamental questions of modern chemistry. The fact that photoexcitation induces enhanced redox reactivity via electron transfer also provides a convenient method for experimentally testing theoretical predictions regarding structural and energetic effects. As can be seen from the very size of this work there is a great deal known about photoinduced electron transfer reactions and the editors have tried to capture the diversity and excitement inherent in this broad field. The reader will find contributions from theorists and experimentalists, from organic and inorganic chemists, from the perspective of the synthetic and mechanistic viewpoint. Some contributions are fundamental basic research, while others clearly show practical applications of these principles. These volumes are intended to serve a joint purpose: as a reference resource and an introductory overview to the diverse research accomplished via photoexcitation of electron donor-acceptor systems. The information is organized in four parts. The first deals with the theoretical and conceptual factors which influence electron transfer. The second covers experimental methodology and medium effects. The third and fourth deal with reactivity, with most organic transformation being addressed in Part C and most inorganic reactions covered in Part D. Each part thus provides an overview of typical reactions observed for these classes of compounds. Part D also provides examples of photoinduced electron transfer in current use in important applications. There is of course a significant interdependence between the four parts. Subject, chemical, and author citation indices appear at the end of each of Parts A, B and C, and comprehensive indices are included in Part D.

Book excerpt: This article summarizes two major areas of research, electron transfer and organometallic photochemistry, addressed during the last dozen or so years. The article emphasizes aspects of the mechanisms of photochemical reactions of transition metal complexes in these two areas. Excited state electron transfer and photoreactions of organometallic complexes have been, and will be, major areas of research opportunity. Practical applications may come in the fields of energy conversion and catalysis. (Author).

Book excerpt: The unique properties and applications of transition metal compounds have long fascinated both physicists and chemists. This volume presents theoretical and experimental studies for a deeper understanding of the electronic and vibronic properties of these compounds. In particular, an introduction into properties of spin sublevels of dd*, dÂ*, and ÂÂ* states is given, and a modern ligand field theory based on the Angular Overlap Model is presented. In experimental case studies it is shown how to characterize different types of electronic transitions using modern methods of laser spectroscopy. Consequences of spin-orbit coupling, zero-field splittings, spin-lattice relaxations, chromophore-matrix interactions, Herzberg-Teller/Franck-Condon activities, and localization/delocalization properties are treated.

Book excerpt: In our research there were two major themes. The first was the continued development of excited states as sensitizers. In one sequence of experiments the synthetic aspects of this area were developed in further detail both by extending the chemistry of the polypyridyl-accepting ligands associated with the excited state and by developing a new procedure for the preparation of unsymmetrical tris-chelate complexes. The second important aspect of this work was the continued investigation of the molecular and electronic structure characteristics of this class of excited states and how those factors determine such properties as photostability and excited state decay. This effort was extended to complexes of Re(I) and an examination of their excited state characteristics, the role of hydride ligand in determining the properties of excited states, the calculation of relative nonradiative decay rate constants for a series of complexes of Ru(II), the participation of higher lying excited states in decay in complexes of Ru(II) and Os(II), and the application of the transient infrared technique to the elucidation of a photochemical intermediate following laser flash excitation. The second area of study involved excited states in soluble polymers to investigate photoinduced electron and energy transfer in multi-component assemblies. This work was based on chemically derivatized polystyrene polymers which contain combinations of chromophores and electron or energy transfer quenchers.

Book excerpt: The techniques of continuous photolysis and pulsed laser flash photolysis, continuous and pulse radiolysis, fast-scan cyclic voltammetry, and time-resolved fluorimetry have been used to examine intramolecular electron transfer within the solvent quenching cage, photodynamics of quenching of the excited states of transition-metal photosensitizers, the properties of excites states and one-electron reduced forms, ground- and excited-state interactions with solutes, and photoinduced oxidations of organic solutes in aqueous solution. The following specific areas were examined: (1) the parameters that govern the yields of redox products from excited-state electron-transfer quenching reactions; (2) the mediation of the properties of excited states and one-electron reduced forms by the ligands and the solution medium; (3) the effect of the interactions between the ground state of the complex and the solution components on the behavior of the excited state; (4) the yields of singlet oxygen from excited-state energy-transfer quenching by O2; and (5) the oxidations of solutes by singlet oxygen, excited-state electron-transfer quenching, and free radicals. This report contains the abstracts of 50 publications describing the studies.
