Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work goes back to the sources of modern English words and studies the development of vocabulary over time. It examines what constitutes a word, with a discussion of words that look and sound the same, words that have several meanings, and "words" that are made up of more than one "word". As well as considering the borrowing of words from other languages throughout the history of English as a means of increasing the vocabulary, the book also outlines how English forms new words by exploiting the structure of existing words, through processes of derivation and compounding. The meaning of a word is composite of a number of relations: reference to external context, relations with other words of a similar or opposite meaning, collocational relations, and so on. The book grapples with the meaning problem, but then goes on to look at the contexts in which words are used and the purposes for which they are used, raising the question whether it is more sensible to talk about English "vocabularies" rather than English "vocabulary".

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professor Zgusta’s work in lexicography and linguistics proper is built upon a multilingual command of linguistic theory, literary history, the history of linguistics, and his experience as a ›practical‹ lexicographer. The topic under consideration may be the organization and development of a standard variety of a language; explorations of the consequences of linguistic theory on the practical lexicographic applications in making dictionaries that range from Ahtna to Zoque and Batad Ifuagao to Yolngu-Matha; the method of definition in bilingual dictionaries; the state of affairs in Russian lexicography; learner’s dictionaries; ancient Greek lexicography; pragmatics; scripts and morphological types; the history of English lexicography; or behind the scenes at the making of the Czech-Chinese dictionary. The reader will not only be offered a careful and wide-ranging study of these important topics in the discipline, but will be taken on a guided comparative and historical tour that illuminates the strengths and weaknesses of current practice and theory. His work reminds those linguists and lexicographers who are locked into ›paradigm‹ battles of the Kuhnian kind that the wheel has already been invented. Most of the articles in this volume have been updated. The editors have also conflated six articles on the history of dictionaries into one seamless narrative with connective tissue supplied by Zgusta.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fifteen chapters in the book are the papers from a conference held at the Australian National University 17-29 October 1999. The conference was hosted by the Australian National Dictionary Centre, Oxford University Press, and the Humanities Research centre. It brought together leading lexicographers from around the world, including the Chief Editor (John Simpson) and Deputy Editor (Penny Silva) of the Oxford English Dictionary. A dominant theme of the papers is the future of regional Englishes (Australian English, Indian English, Canadian English, etc.) in the context of the increasing globalisation of English. Other issues covered include: the relationships between English and other official languages, the relationships between English and indigenous languages, language and national identity, the history of recording regional Englishes in dictionaries, and the role of British and American English as 'linguistic imperialists'. The countries which receive major emphasis are Australia, Bangladesh, Canada, Fiji, India, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, and South Africa.
