Book excerpt: Leaving home for the first time to attend college is stressful enough. But when the roommate lottery of Paradise Valley University strikes, it produces couples who have absolutely nothing in common; causing personality clashes which takes the stress to a whole new level. Dismay hits Sidra Howard, the prim and proper princess, when she contemplates spending an entire semester with Chasity Parker, the troubled beauty with a sharp tongue and even sharper claws. Malajia Simmons, a boy crazed, attention seeking diva, is no happier. Not only does she get stuck with the upper bunk bed, she has to share a triple room with Alexandra Chisolm, a nosey and overbearing, self proclaimed "know-it-all". But even the meddling Alexandra isn't as bad as Emily Harris, the shy, mommy's girl with a non-existent backbone.Coming to college to escape her home life, Chasity hopes to get through the semester without any problems. Her hopes are tainted once she begins to have to resist the advances of a determined football star, on top of dealing with family drama which seems to have followed her. Alexandra's need to fix everyone's problems not only rubs her roommates the wrong way, it also causes her to fall blind to the problems brewing with the boyfriend that she left behind. Eventually she'll be forced to face the issues head on. Emily's refusal to come out of her shell is too much to handle for party girl Malajia, whose main purpose is to have fun and be seen. The same doesn't apply to Sidra, who's more concerned with trying to keep her over-the-top stress level under control. These five young women try to handle family drama, pressure, and conflicts; all while trying to maintain their grades. They quickly learn that college life isn't what they expected and must adapt to their new environment if they ever hope to make it through their first semester.

Since divorcing her ex-husband nine years ago, thirty-five-year-old Patience Harvey has focused on rebuilding her life and raising her eight-year-old daughter, Noelle. Thriving and content with her career and her growing family, the last thing that Patience is thinking about is entertaining another relationship. Running a successful construction company from the ground up has kept Michael Carter busy. However, after three years as a single man, the thirty-seven-year-old bachelor has reached the point where he’s longing for companionship, but feels that he’s missed his chance. That is, until an unexpected detour to a bakery leads him to meet a fellow patron who immediately catches his eye—and unbeknownst to her—captures his heart. Patience never imagined that a pit stop for a few pastries would put her in the presence of a man who could make her consider diving back into dating. Yet as she continues crossing paths with the enticing Michael, she knows she’s ready. However, as courtship flourishes into romance, Patience’s past resurfaces, threatening not only their bliss, but her sanity. Will Patience’s past trauma tear this new relationship apart? Or can she and Michael overcome the obstacles thrown their way to reach their happily-ever-after?

Book Synopsis College in Black and White by : Walter R. Allen
Download or read book College in Black and White written by Walter R. Allen and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1991-07-03 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reports findings from the National Study of Black College Students, a comprehensive study of Black college students' characteristics, experiences, and achievements as related to student background, institutional context, and interpersonal relationships. Over 4,000 undergraduates and graduate/professional students on sixteen campuses (eight historically Black and eight predominantly White) participated in this mail survey. Using these and other data, this book systematically examines the current state of Black students in U.S. higher education. Until now, our understanding has been limited by inadequate data, misguided theories, and failure to properly interpret the Black American reality. This volume challenges our assumptions and contributes to the growing body of knowledge about Black student experiences and outcomes in higher education.
