Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Community colleges evolved in Canada during the "golden years" of educational innovation between 1960 and 1975. A diversity of factors - historical, socio-economic, political and educational - contributed to the development of college systems with distinctive goals and structures. This book is the first up-to-date and comprehensive study of a potent national educational and social phenomenon, largely unknown and largely unappreciated. The authors describe provincial and territorial college systems as they have evolved to 1985, discussing problems particular to each system and evaluating the extent to which often idealistic early goals have been realized. They identify key issues which are critical to the future of these systems and which, if ignored, will undermine community college education across Canada. These include accessibility, identity, relations with governments, management and leadership, and evaluation and accountability. In each case the authors draw upon their own expertise and experience to describe directions for resolution of these issues. The book contains a comprehensive and topical bibliography of both published and unpublished material related to many aspects of Canadian community college development. It also includes a French language bibliography. Unique in many aspects, this book is designed to interest both graduate and undergraduate students in adult and higher education and administration as well as those directly involved in community colleges, government education ministries and a broad lay public.

Book excerpt: In The Handbook of Canadian Higher Education Law, experts examine key legal issues in postsecondary education. Establishing the current governance arrangements for Canadian postsecondary education within a historical context, the editors provide a detailed look at the legislative framework of postsecondary education and the role of the federal and provincial governments in organizing, regulating, and funding these institutions. Individual chapters analyze and expound on legal issues associated with institutional governance and management, identifying laws that define the rights and freedoms of faculty and students, and the obligations of the institutions towards them. Contributors engage with a wide range of issues associated with community activities - such as research ventures, knowledge mobilization, commercial activities, partnerships with industry, and land development projects that are hosted by postsecondary institutions. Presenting a wide range of documentary analysis and study of case law, legislation, regulation, and policy, this essential contribution to public policy determines current and emerging legal issues facing the academy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Follow Your Interests to Find the Right College is a different sort of college guide -- one that helps students and their families better understand the vast amount of options available for college based on a student's interests. Topics in this comprehensive, easy-to-understand guide include, but are not limited to: • the argument for liberal arts • college degrees programs in Canada, UK, Australia, and beyond • art and architecture programs • business • equine-related opportunities • engineering • health care majors • Ivy League • benefits of public liberal arts colleges and university honors programs • armed service academies • environmentally-oriented colleges and programs • faith-based colleges And much more…. Students, parents, and college advisers will appreciate the vast amount of information presented and synthesized in this user-friendly format. Even the most college-savvy reader can turn to the well-researched, thoughtful chapters on almost every academic or social area as well as advice on broader college-related topics, such as financing college and advice for home-schooled students. By providing and interpreting vast amounts of data not collectively available online or in other guidebooks, each chapter provides both an overview and fine detail for a wide variety of subjects. Using this book as a starting point, parents and advisers can quickly increase their knowledge in a given area and be ready to help students explore options with confidence, while also making the best use of their time. Once you know what you want in a college, you can evaluate the best way, from an admissions strategy, to get there. Until you know what you want, however, it doesn't make sense to jump into the application game. Your admissions plan could be very different from your friends' based on what you actually want to get out of your college experience. Knowing the options and figuring out the best ones for you will make you, your child, or your student a smarter, more strategic, and more confident college applicant.

With contributions by leading scholars, it addresses such topics as leadership, entrepreneurship, new forms of organization, accountability, instructional methodology, the emergence of a college culture, and education of First Nations students. Key questions are explored. How are differences in collective and individual interests to be managed? How can social, economic, and demographic realities be taken into account in managing the 'intangible capital' of education? What are the best ways of ensuring opportunities for education, training, flexibility, and varied access and mobility within higher education systems?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: * Is the conferring of baccalaureate degrees by community colleges a solution to increasing access to and capacity in higher education?* Will the conferring of baccalaureate degrees restrict open access to, and imperil the existing mission of, community colleges?* What are the models and alternative methods of delivery? What are the implications?Breaking away from their traditional mission of conferring only associate degrees and occupational credentials, an increasing number of community colleges have begun seriously to explore and, indeed, in some U.S. states and Canadian provinces, to actually implement offering and conferring bachelor’s degrees. Some leaders see these changes as a natural extension of community colleges’ commitment to access, while others view their awarding of baccalaureate degrees as inappropriate and threatening the basic core values of this unique sector of higher education. This has become a "hot" and controversial topic, not only among community college and university leaders, but also among policy makers, business leaders and students concerned with issues of access, cost and the structure and purposes of post-secondary education. This book analyzes the emerging trend of the community college baccalaureate degree in the United States and Canada in order to contribute to the development of policy. The authors aim to describe, document, and explain this significant development in higher education. They present the background, examples of practice and different models of delivery, develop a common terminology to facilitate discussion, give voice to the views of proponents and critics alike, and include a comprehensive bibliography and set of resources. This book is intended as a catalyst for dialog, action and further research on this critical and emerging trend. It is essential reading for leaders of community colleges, for administrators and planners in higher education concerned with issues of access and articulation, and anyone in public policy grappling with demographic trends and society’s need for educated citizens able to meet the challenges of the future.
