Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Collective Courage, Jessica Gordon Nembhard chronicles African American cooperative business ownership and its place in the movements for Black civil rights and economic equality. Not since W. E. B. Du Bois’s 1907 Economic Co-operation Among Negro Americans has there been a full-length, nationwide study of African American cooperatives. Collective Courage extends that story into the twenty-first century. Many of the players are well known in the history of the African American experience: Du Bois, A. Philip Randolph and the Ladies' Auxiliary to the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, Nannie Helen Burroughs, Fannie Lou Hamer, Ella Jo Baker, George Schuyler and the Young Negroes’ Co-operative League, the Nation of Islam, and the Black Panther Party. Adding the cooperative movement to Black history results in a retelling of the African American experience, with an increased understanding of African American collective economic agency and grassroots economic organizing. To tell the story, Gordon Nembhard uses a variety of newspapers, period magazines, and journals; co-ops’ articles of incorporation, minutes from annual meetings, newsletters, budgets, and income statements; and scholarly books, memoirs, and biographies. These sources reveal the achievements and challenges of Black co-ops, collective economic action, and social entrepreneurship. Gordon Nembhard finds that African Americans, as well as other people of color and low-income people, have benefitted greatly from cooperative ownership and democratic economic participation throughout the nation’s history.

Book excerpt: An African-American writer's concise, heartfelt take on the state of his nation, exploring the war between the values he has always held and the reality with which he is confronted in twenty-first-century America. In the tradition of James Baldwin's The Fire Next Time and Ta-Nehisi Coates's Between the World and Me comes Clifford Thompson's What It Is. Thompson was raised to believe in treating every person of every color as an individual, and he decided as a young man that America, despite its history of racial oppression, was his home as much as anyone else's. As a middle-aged, happily married father of biracial children, Thompson finds himself questioning his most deeply held convictions when the race-baiting Donald Trump ascends to the presidency—elected by whites, whom Thompson had refused to judge as a group, and who make up the majority in this country Thompson had called his own. In the grip of contradictory emotions, Thompson turns for guidance to the wisdom of writers he admires while knowing that the answers to his questions about America ultimately lie in America itself. Through interviews with a small but varied group of Americans he hears sharply divergent opinions about what is happening in the country while trying to find his own answers—conclusions based not on conventional wisdom or on what he would like to believe, but on what he sees.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new collection of short fiction from the Edgar Award-winning author of Devil in a Blue Dress and Trouble is What I Do. With his extraordinary fiction and gripping television writing, Walter Mosley has proven himself a master of narrative tension. The Awkward Black Man collects seventeen of Mosley’s most accomplished short stories to showcase the full range of his remarkable talent. Touching, contemplative, and always surprising, these stories introduce an array of imperfect characters—awkward, self-defeating, elf-involved, or just plain odd. In The Awkward Black Man, Mosley overturns the stereotypes that corral black male characters and paints subtle, powerful portraits of unique individuals. In "The Good News Is," a man’s insecurity about his weight gives way to illness and a loneliness so intense that he’d do anything for a little human comfort. "Pet Fly," previously published in the New Yorker, follows a man working as a mailroom clerk—a solitary job for which he is overqualified—and the unforeseen repercussions he endures when he attempts to forge a new connection. And "Almost Alyce" chronicles failed loves, family loss, alcoholism, and a Zen approach to the art of begging that proves surprisingly effective.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When many in America hear the phrase "black man with a gun," they immediately think negatively. Is that an irrational fear or do the facts bear it out? If you've ever wondered what it's like to be a conservative black man in America, then this is the book for you. Kenn Blanchard takes you behind the scenes to places and perspectives you could never go unchaperoned. He has been involved in the gun rights fight since 1991. He breaks through the racial divide by destroying negative stereotypes about the black community and how they view guns and how they view traditionally white institutions like the NRA. The good reverend answers all these questions and more. You can't put Kenn Blanchard in a box; there's just too much of him. He's a preacher, a motorcycle rider, a Marine veteran, a loving husband and father, and a retired CIA officer. Hear his plea as he reaches out to his brothers and sisters in the African-American community in his best attempt at bringing them into the armed American fold. Black Man with a Gun Reloaded is not color blind. Rather, it takes the bull by the horns and rips its head clean off!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Black male scholars within this important book are painfully aware that the brutal murder of George Floyd was not due to a few "bad apples." They understand that they are perceived as "threats" and "criminals" within a distorted white imaginary that is embedded with processes of mythopoetic construction, racial capitalism, and a deep anti-Black male social ontology. Edited by prominent philosopher George Yancy, Black Men from behind the Veil: Ontological Interrogations emphasizes the importance of Black male epistemic agency and the courage to speak the truth regarding an America that values Black male life on the cheap and that attempts to control the movement of Black men, their capacity to breathe, and their being through anti-Black technologies of surveillance, confinement, policing, and white nation-building. There is no single monolithic Black male voice that dominates this crucial and necessary text. Each voice speaks of pain behind the Veil, revealing narrative specificity and an important recursive truth: Black men, within the white American psyche, are both necessary and yet disposable. The existential and sociohistorical weight of this truth is made painfully clear through the voices of these Black men.

Book excerpt: Open. Sincere. Honest. Unfiltered. In early June of 2020, many of us found ourselves unable to sleep ... unable to function normally ... unable to comprehend that once again, a black man found himself unable to breathe and ultimately met his demise at the hands of the police. You may have also found yourself in a state of shock and wanting to do something. The contributors to A Collective Breath: Stories of Being Black in America and Visions of Change found themselves in similar positions. Their candid, personal thoughts and feelings reveal the many challenges that blacks face in America today-challenges they may not directly divulge to others but that are part of their realities, and they offer ideas for solutions and actions to pave the way to a more optimistic future. Consisting of a wide variety of blacks who are well-educated; who are community leaders, entrepreneurs, business owners, and professionals; and who are involved with their families and religious organizations, the contributors tell of what it is like to be black in America. In A Collective Breath, the contributors do not hold back. They take a collective breath-the breaths that George Floyd, Manuel Ellis, Javier Ambler, Eric Garner, and so many others could not take-to document for the world how they feel in this moment; the lenses through which they, as blacks in America, view and live their lives; and what they believe needs to change today for a different tomorrow.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Western History has pretended and made an effort to prove in modern times that black people, Africans or people of African descent have never been great thinkers, philosophers, artists or writers. That effort of racism in history has created a total ignorance of reality and many truths have died in oblivion. Racism, that dying disease is still very much alive in many countries, where people of African and African descent are being murdered, mistreated and whose lives are being torn apart in the very countries and lands that their ancestors built. It is even funny to want to defend racism, especially in a world where a large part of the world's population has not been allowed to speak, to live, to feel oppressed by a large minority that pretends to be the majority. It is a very hard reality that racists cannot easily understand, but perhaps their descendants can, because they are responsible for much evil, and have destroyed the natural evolution of the world for several centuries. For the last four hundred years, they have precisely denied blacks the right to study, to read or to express their intellectuality. In the United States of America, black men and women, fathers and mothers, young men and women, boys and girls were lynched and murdered for the mere fact of having a book or reading a book. Now in this world in which truth is more tolerable than in other times, and thinking is no longer a problem for the masses; now that it is easier to tell the truth because the world has learned to understand each other without dogmas, in these times so different but at the same time unique; now that the world is beginning to wake up from a great sleep, now comes into your hands this book, The Book of Rules: Thoughts of An Awakened Black Man. Thanks for Reading this lines. Javier Clemente Engonga,
