Book excerpt: The post World War II era witnessed a tremendous growth in the research carried out in neutron-induced reactions and especially in neutron capture y-ray studies. This growth was stimulated by the availability of neutron sources, such as reactors and accelerators, and by the development of high resolution y-ray and conversion electron detectors. Today the combination of high flux reactors and precise instrumentation has produced spectral data of exceptional quality, as the pages of these proceedings illustrate. The world-wide community of the practioners of the art of cap ture y-ray spectroscopy has met three times in the last decade: the first international symposium on this subject was held at Studsvik, Sweden in 1969, and the second at Petten, The Netherlands in 1974. A smaller meeting, of mostly u. S. and some European parti cipation, was held at Argonne National Laboratory in 1966. A perusal of the proceedings of these meetings shows the striking ad vances in this now mature field of physics over the last dozen years. Each meeting has seen a small but perceptible increase in the number of papers presented and the number of laboratories repre sented. More importantly, each meeting has documented the increasing impact of (n,y) reasearch, not only on other areas of basic physics, but also on commercial and medical applications of this technology. A total of 29 invited papers and 97 contributed papers were presented at this symposium.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Increasing dominance of negative parity intruder states in neutron-rich nuclei in the sd shell as $N$ approaches $20$ shows evidence of evolving shell structure. Systematically examining the structure of isotopes with increasing $N$ while filling the $ u d_{3/2}$ level highlights a large number of intruder configurations. These intruder configurations come from the decrease in energy to promote a neutron across the $N = 20$ shell gap. Such studies are needed to help in the refinement of the shell model and increase its predictive power for nuclei far from stability. The presented work chronicles a series of $^{18}$O($^{18}$O, $pn$) experiments conducted around the world to study high spin states in $^{34}$P, a nucleus in the $sd$ shell bordering the ``island of inversion'. One of these experiments which was conducted at Argonne National Laboratory where a 24 MeV neutron rich $^{18}$O beam impinged on a Ta backed $^{18}$O target, is presented here in great detail. The evaporated charged particles were detected with {sc microball} while the $gamma$ rays emitted were detected with {sc gammasphere}. A brief discussion of the theory of analysis techniques used in in-beam $gamma$-ray spectroscopy is presented followed by an in depth discussion of the analysis of this experiment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Conference on "Nuclear Structure Study with Neutrons" or ganized in Budapest between 31st July and 5th August. 1972. was the successor of a meeting held seven years ago in Antwerp. The close links between the two conferences were revealed not in name alone but. more importantly. in the choice of subjects discussed. As in Antwerp. the lectures and contributions to the Budapest Conference could be grouped under the following five main headings: nuclear spectroscopy; the optical model; the statistical model and intermediate structures; the mechanism of neutron capture and non-statistical effects; and, finally. miscellaneous special topics. The invited papers on the one hand summarizing recent developments and current thinking in one of the above main topics. and the other surveying the most important results of the contributed papers submitted to the Conference. were presented on the plenary sessions. Most of the contributed papers were read in full on three parallel sessions. This volume contains the complete text of all the lectures delivered in the plenary sessions and abstracts of the contributed papers. The invited talks were presented at the Conference in a rather random order because of technical reasons, it seemed. however, more sensible to change their order according to their subjects and to print them grouped under the above main headings. Further more we divided the Proceedings into two main parts, the first containing only the lectures of summarizing character. the second including the abstracts of the contributions together with the surveying talks.

Book excerpt: The reactor-based laboratory at the Institut Laue-Langevin is recognized as the world's most productive and reliable source of slow neutrons for the study of low energy particle and nuclear physics. The book highlights the impact of about 600 very diverse publications about work performed in these fields during the past more than 30 years of reactor operation at this institute. On one hand neutrons are used as a tool to generate nuclei in excited states for studying their structure and decay, in particular fission. Uniquely sensitive experiments can tell us a great deal about the symmetry characteristics of nuclei and their fission properties. On the other hand, studies with slow neutrons as the object of investigation are complementary to studies at huge particle accelerators. Experiments carried out at the ILL contribute to elucidate basic questions about the building blocks of the Universe by analyzing very precisely subtle neutron properties.

This book was released on 1991-03-06 with total page 650 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The proceedings present the most recent results of experimental and theoretical nuclear spectroscopy, revealing the effects of rapid rotation and thermal fluctuations on the shapes and superfluid properties of a wide range of atomic nuclei. Unstable and novel shapes are emphasized, e.g. super-and hyper-deformed shapes, and triaxial quadrupole and octupole shapes (both static and vibrational). Theoretical treatments are given in terms of a variety of mean field models, as well as the Fermion Dynamical Symmetry Model and the Interacting Boson Model. New experimental methods of gamma-ray spectroscopy are discussed, including fluctuation analysis and energy-ordered gamma ray spectroscopy.
