Book Synopsis Henry Walters and Bernard Berenson by : Stanley Mazaroff
Download or read book Henry Walters and Bernard Berenson written by Stanley Mazaroff and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2020-05-05 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Collecting Italian Renaissance paintings during America’s Gilded Age was fraught with risk because of the uncertain identities of the artists and the conflicting interests of the dealers. Stanley Mazaroff’s fascinating account of the close relationship between Henry Walters, founder of the legendary Walters Art Museum in Baltimore, and Bernard Berenson, the era’s preeminent connoisseur of Italian paintings, richly illustrates this important chapter of America’s cultural history. When Walters opened his Italianate museum in 1909, it was labeled as America’s “Great Temple of Art.” With more than 500 Italian paintings, including self-portraits purportedly by Raphael and Michelangelo, Walters’s collection was compared favorably with the great collections in London, Paris, and Berlin. In the midst of this fanfare, Berenson contacted Walters and offered to analyze his collection, sell him additional paintings, and write a scholarly catalogue that would trumpet the collection on both sides of the Atlantic. What Berenson offered was what Walters desperately needed—a badge of scholarship that Berenson’s invaluable imprimatur would undoubtedly bring. By 1912, Walters had become Berenson’s most active client, their business alliance wrapped in a warm and personal friendship. But this relationship soon became strained and was finally severed by a confluence of broken promises, inattention, deceit, and ethical conflict. To Walters’s chagrin, Berenson swept away the self-portraits allegedly by Raphael and Michelangelo and publicly scorned paintings that he was supposed to praise. Though painful to Walters, Berenson’s guidance ultimately led to a panoramic collection that beautifully told the great history of Italian Renaissance painting. Based primarily on correspondence and other archival documents recently discovered at the Walters Art Museum and the Villa I Tatti in Florence, the intriguing story of Walters and Berenson offers unusual insight into the pleasures and perils of collecting Italian Renaissance paintings, the ethics in the marketplace, and the founding of American art museums.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Oriental Collection of W. T. Walters: 65 Mt. Vernon Place, Baltimore, 1884 We submit to our friends, and those generally interested in the subject, the result of our efforts for more than twenty years as collectors of Oriental objects of art, mainly Chinese and Japanese. Our interest and effort have been more in the direction of securing characteristic examples of the beautiful, either in form, color or material, than of the merely curious. Regarding the Ceramic Art from the standpoint Of true decorative principles, whether in its strongest character istics, or in the more subtle refinement and delicacy of treatment both of color and general manipulation, there can be no question that the Chinese have established their preeminence in this artistic development, compared with all that has been accomplished up to the present time; therefore the Collection will be found to be made up largely of the products of that remarkable people. In com parison with the productions Of all other countries, their colors will be found to possess less meretriciousness, greater strength and depth, as well as greater elegance. We refer, of course, to their ancient productions, say previous to the middle of the last century, when the decadence Of the art had become manifest, stimulated no doubt by the demands of European commerce, not for peculiar or single art objects, but for thousands of the mechanical reproductions of the same thing. Book excerpt: As a plague descends on Medieval England, a courageous Lady must protect her land and people at all costs in this historical novel: “Enthralling” (Julian Fellowes, creator of The Gilded Age). England, 1348. When the Black Death arrives in Dorset, no one knows what manner of sickness it is or how it spreads and kills so quickly. The Church proclaims it a punishment from God, insisting that daily confession is their only hope for survival. But Lady Anne of Devilish has different ideas. With her trusted steward Thaddeus at her side—and her brutal husband absent—she gathers her serfs within the moated walls of Devilish and refuse entry to outsiders, including her husband. Bu in such a confined space, conflicts soon arise. Ignorant of the world outside, Lady Anne’s people wrestle with the terrible uncertainty of their futures. And as food stocks run low, they begin to wonder how long they can survive within. The moment will come when they must cross the moat . . . and encounter a world transformed in ways they can’t imagine.

Book Synopsis Victorian Artists' Autograph Replicas by : Julie F. Codell
Download or read book Victorian Artists' Autograph Replicas written by Julie F. Codell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-05-10 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a wide-ranging exploration of the production of Victorian art autograph replicas, a painting’s subsequent versions created by the same artist who painted the first version. Autograph replicas were considered originals, not copies, and were highly valued by collectors in Britain, America, Japan, Australia, and South Africa. Motivated by complex combinations of aesthetic and commercial interests, replicas generated a global, and especially transatlantic, market between the 1870s and the 1940s, and almost all collected replicas were eventually donated to US public museums, giving replicas authority in matters of public taste and museums’ modern cultural roles. This book will be of interest to scholars in art history, museum studies, and economic history.

Book Synopsis The Great Chinese Art Transfer by : Michael St. Clair
Download or read book The Great Chinese Art Transfer written by Michael St. Clair and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2016-04-01 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book tells the story of how and why millions of Chinese works of art got exported to collectors and institutions in the West, in particular to the United States. As China’s last dynasty was weakening and collapsing from 1860 into the early years of the twentieth century, China’s internal chaos allowed imperial and private Chinese collections to be scattered, looted and sold. A remarkable and varied group of Westerners entered the country, had their eyes opened to centuries of Chinese creativity and gathered up paintings, bronzes and ceramics, as well as sculptures, jades and bronzes. The migration to America and Europe of China’s art is one of the greatest outflows of a culture’s artistic heritage in human history. A good deal of the art procured by collectors and dealers, some famous and others little known but all remarkable in individual ways, eventually wound up in American and European museums. Today some of the art still in private hands is returning to China via international auctions and aggressive purchases by Chinese millionaires.
