Download or read book The Evolving House Museum written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2024-08-08 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores twelve house museums, created over more than two centuries, and founded across the globe. What motivates collectors to establish independent house museums instead of donating their collections to preexisting institutions? How have collectors’ original intentions manifested themselves in their museums? Have founder mandates aided the survival or caused the demise of their institutions? How have house museums’ collections or buildings evolved over time? Must museums reinterpret their collections to remain relevant to contemporary and diverse audiences? In seeking to answer these questions, the volume’s authors share the unique stories behind the creation and evolution of these fascinating institutions, and the intriguing stories of the exceptional individuals who founded them. Contributors: Aistė Bimbirytė, Eliza Butler, Chih-En Chen, Enrico Colle, Allegra Davis, Marissa Hershon, Mia Laufer, Ulrike Müller, Nadine Nour el Din, Inge Reist, Anne Nellis Richter, and Georgina S. Walker.

Book Synopsis Cornelis Schut (1597-1655) by : Gertrude Wilmers
Download or read book Cornelis Schut (1597-1655) written by Gertrude Wilmers and published by Brepols Publishers. This book was released on 1996 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication is a monograph on the Antwerp artist, whose surviving oeuvre dates from the mid-1620s to the 1650s. A prolific master whose known paintings number over one hundred, Schut achieved considerable succes during his lifetime. This study sets Schut's life and career within the context of the artistic and cultural milieu of his time, defining his role in the emergence of a new style after the death of Rubens in 1640, and considers his impact on future generations. A workable chronology for Schut's paintings is established through an analysis of style, iconography and patronage, taking into account past scholarship. The artists's working methods and studio practices and his output in other media are also discussed. A separate chapter is devoted to the numerous graland pictures he executed in collaboration with the Jesuit flower painter Daniel Seghers. A complete catalogue raisonne of Schut's paintings, the first of its kind, is presented.

Book Synopsis Seventeenth-Century Dutch and Flemish Painting by : Ivan Gaskell
Download or read book Seventeenth-Century Dutch and Flemish Painting written by Ivan Gaskell and published by Philip Wilson Publishers, Limited. This book was released on 1990 with total page 556 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A catalogue of 128 paintings produced during this period in which the art of portraiture was transformed, religious imagery dynamized, and new genres such as flower painting were established. The art of Holland's Golden Age is perennially popular with collectors and gallery visitors alike and this book provides a new insight into this unique private collection. In his introduction Ivan Gaskill considers the extremely varied character of Dutch and Flemsih seventeenth century art. It ranges from minutely observed scens of everyday life to portraits, religious works and intimate still-life compositions. The Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection is especially rich in landscapes, a subject which had emerged as a seperate genre in the Netherlands in the previous century. The author outlines the development of painting on both sides of the border, placing it in its social and historical context, and goes on to discuss the taste for Dutch and Flemish art from the seventeenth century to the present day and spotlights some of the earlier collectors. This detailed catalogue of 128 paintings is the result of meticulous researchin British, Dutch and American libraries and archives. The entries are arranged in ten groups by subject so that thematic similarities can be conveniently examined. Amongst the most celebrated works is Frans Hal's monumental "Family Portrait" - once the most expensive painting in the world. All the paintings are illustrated in colour and are accompanied by comparative illustrations and technical photographs.
