This book equips readers with the knowledge and tools needed to address sustainability challenges effectively by bridging the gap between theory and practice. The book offers insights from environmental law, sustainability studies, and education through a multidisciplinary approach, providing a holistic perspective on sustainability issues.

Book excerpt: This book examines how the International Court of Justice (ICJ) reviews State behaviour through the prism of the standard of review. It develops a novel rationale to support the ICJ's application of deferential standards of review as a judicial avoidance technique, based on strategic considerations. It then goes on to empirically assess all 31 decisions of the Court in which the standard of review was at issue, showing how the Court determines that standard, and answering the question of whether it varies its review intensity strategically. As a result, the book's original contribution is two-fold: establishing a new rationale for judicial deference (that can be applied to all international courts and tribunals); and providing the first comprehensive, empirical analysis of the ICJ's standards of review. It will be beneficial to all scholars of the Court and those interested in judicial strategy.

Book excerpt: This edited collection provides the first accessible introduction to Law and Humanities. Each chapter explores the nature, development and possible further trajectory of a disciplinary ‘law and’ field. Each chapter is written by an expert in the respective field and addresses how the two disciplines of law and the other respective field operate. This edited work, therefore, fulfils a real and pressing need to provide an accessible, introductory but critical guide to law and humanities as a whole by exploring how each disciplinary ‘law and’ field has developed, contributes to further scrutinizing the content and role of law, and how it can contribute and be enriched by being understood within the law and humanities tradition as a whole.

Book excerpt: This book will explore the legal avenues available to intersex and transgender female athletes who experience discrimination based on their gender identity and sex characteristics in sports. It will examine how they can seek legal remedies for violations of their human rights under international human rights law, and provide guidance to legal practitioners and athletes on how to access judicial or quasi-judicial bodies in such situations. This is an important topic given the increasing attention being paid to the rights of intersex and transgender female athletes, and the need to ensure that they are not unfairly excluded from participating in sports competitions.

This book was released on 2024-07-22 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses contemporary standards of legal safeguards in the area of bulk electronic surveillance from the perspective of the European legal model. Bulk, or untargeted, surveillance, although traditionally associated with the interception of electronic communications, is increasingly used as a convenient tool for collecting information on large groups of society. The collection of redundant information, which is intrinsic to bulk surveillance, is no longer a side effect but an important objective of the use of bulk powers. As a result, untargeted surveillance is everywhere increasingly being implemented, and without any clear link to state security or crime-fighting objectives. This work examines the origins of untargeted measures, explores their mechanics and key concepts, and defines what distinguishes them from other forms of surveillance. The various elements of the legal safeguards in place, which are fundamental to protecting individuals from the risks of abuse of power, are analysed in detail. The book discusses not only the different standards of legal safeguards, but also gives examples of their implementation in individual European countries. It also examines the relationship between the development of the global data market and untargeted surveillance powers, in particular in the context of the risks associated with algorithmic surveillance, client-side scanning, the privatisation of surveillance – or surveillance as a service – and the increasingly widespread use of preventive content filtering mechanisms. The book will be a valuable resource for academics and researchers working in the areas of law, international relations, public policy, engineering and sociology. It will also appeal to professionals dealing with various aspects of the use of surveillance measures, such as experts, members of the legislature and law enforcement agencies. Book excerpt: "The 160-page illustrated exhibition catalogue Alexey Brodovitch: Astonish Me is published by the Barnes Foundation in association with Yale University Press. Edited by curator Katy Wan and including essays from Vince Aletti, David Campany, and Wan, the book gives particular attention to his pivotal relationships with photographers.. The authors address Brodovitch’s impact on photography as an artistic medium in the mid-20th century and explore how European art and design became the foundation of a new American print culture. Brodovitch’s own work is illuminated through his personal projects—such as the magazine Portfolio and the photographic project Ballet, which depicted performances of the itinerant Ballets Russes de Monte Carlo in the United States. Case studies of his transformative collaborations with photographers such as Eve Arnold, Richard Avedon, Irving Penn, Lisette Model, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Hans Namuth, and André Kertész reveal pivotal encounters that may surprise even the most ardent photography aficionado."--Barnes Foundation website.
