Book Synopsis Manichaeism and Its Legacy by : J. Kevin Coyle
Download or read book Manichaeism and Its Legacy written by J. Kevin Coyle and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2009-10-23 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume reproduces nineteen chapters and articles published between 1991 through 2008, on Manichaeism, and its contacts with Augustine of Hippo, its most famous convert and also best-known adversary. The contents are divided into four parts: perceptions of Mani within the Roman Empire, select aspects of Manichaean thought, women in Manichaeism, and Manichaeism and Augustine. Though these chapters and articles reproduce their originals, adjustments have been made to include cross-referencing, newer editions, and the like, all with the aim of rendering them more accessible to a new readership among those who follow the fortunes of Mani’s religion in the Roman Empire and/or the “Manichaean” aspects of Augustine of Hippo.

Book Synopsis Theology and the Quest for Truth by : Mathijs Lamberigts
Download or read book Theology and the Quest for Truth written by Mathijs Lamberigts and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 2006 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2001, three research groups from the field of systematic theology and church history at the Faculty of Theology, K.U.Leuven, decided to join forces in an interdisciplinary project, entitled: "Orthodoxy: Process and Product". The main aim of this project consists of a "church-historical and systematic-theological study of the determination of truth in church and theology". Senior and junior scholars from the three groups agreed to take this theme as the starting point and leading question from which the many research projects they are engaged in, could be brought into relationship and - as far as possible - integrated. Although the question for theological truth already structured the research being conducted in the three groups to a significant degree, joining forces promised the realisation of a surplus-value, and this both through the gathering of a considerable critical mass (in total more than thirty junior and senior researchers) and the interdisciplinary design of the project. In this volume a first collection of contributions to this project, from a diversity of angles and research subjects, is presented. In these contributions scholars from the participating research groups investigate the implications of the overall research question for their particular line of research and research methodologies, and suggest how from this specific research the overall question may be refined and elements of answering it can be provided.
Book Synopsis The Quranic Jesus by : Carlos Andrés Segovia
Download or read book The Quranic Jesus written by Carlos Andrés Segovia and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2018-11-19 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is it possible to rethink the multilayered and polyvalent Christology of the Qur’ān against the intersecting of competing peripheral Christianities, anti-Jewish Christian polemics, and the making of a new Arab state in the 7th-century Near East? To what extent may this help us to decipher, moreover, the intricate redactional process of the quranic corpus? And can we unearth from any conclusions as to the tension between a messianic-oriented and a prophetic-guided religious thought buried in the document? By analysing, first, the typology and plausible date of the Jesus texts contained in the Qur’ān (which implies moving far beyond both the habitual chronology of the Qur’ān and the common thematic division of the passages in question) and by examining, in the second place, the Qur’ān’s earliest Christology via-à-vis its later (and indeed much better known) Muhamadan kerygma, the present study answers these crucial questions and, thereby, sheds new light on the Qur’ān’s original sectarian milieu and pre-canonical development.

Book Synopsis The Forgotten Contribution of the Teaching Sisters by : Bart Hellinckx
Download or read book The Forgotten Contribution of the Teaching Sisters written by Bart Hellinckx and published by Leuven University Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "For far too long Catholic teaching sisters have been denied their rightful place in the history of education. It is only during the past twenty-five years that researchers in many countries have begun to reveal the fundamental role played by these women in the schooling of children of both the masses and the elite during the 19th and 20th centuries. This essay provides for the first time a detailed overview of the historiography of the teaching sisters in Western Europe, North America, Latin America and Australasia, surveying scholarship since 1985. It reviews the literature on six major themes: contribution to schooling, teaching orders and schools, educational philosophy, content and practice, life and lived experience of teachers and students, the professionalization of teaching, and changes in the composition of the teaching staff. Very rich in bibliographical references, this book is indispensable for all further research on this significant but underexplored group of women teachers."--Publisher's website.
Book Synopsis The Maccabean Martyrs as Saviours of the Jewish People by : Jan Willem van Henten
Download or read book The Maccabean Martyrs as Saviours of the Jewish People written by Jan Willem van Henten and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-11-22 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume deals with the presentation of the so-called Maccabean martyrs and the elder Razis in 2 and 4 Maccabees, discussing the religious, the political as well as the philosophical aspects of noble death in these writings. It argues that the theme of martyrdom is a very important part of the self-image of the Jews as presented by the authors of both works. Eleazar, the anonymous mother with her seven sons and Razis should, therefore, be considered heroes of the Jewish people. The first part of the book discusses the sources and the second part deals with the descriptions of noble death. This section of the book also offers extensive discussions of related non-Jewish traditions which highlight the political-patriotic dimension of noble death as described in 2 and 4 Maccabees.
