Book Synopsis The Great Age of British Watercolours, 1750-1880 by : Andrew Wilton

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The revolution in watercolours of the later eighteenth century and its Victorian aftermath is acknowledged to be one of the greatest triumphs of British art. Its effect was to transform the modest tinted drawing of the topographer into a powerful and highly flexible means of expression for some of the Romantic era's greatest artists, among them Thomas Girtin, J.M.W. Turner and John Constable. The painters of the next generation were no less ambitious, and the range of subject-matter and technical inventiveness that was sustained for much of the Victorian period was to set a standard in watercolour painting that was without equal abroad. In this magnificently illustrated survey of the great age of British watercolours, Andrew Wilton and Anne Lyles trace the development of attitudes to landscape and to the human figure in the landscape from 1750 to 1880. They show how once the traditional pen and ink drawing and its augmented washes of colour had been abandoned in order to paint directly in watercolours without pen outlines, the way was open for the powerful Romantic landscapes of the following decade and beyond, many of which were painted in the wild mountainous regions of Wales and Scotland. During the nineteenth century, as the gilt-framed exhibition watercolour began to challenge the long-established oil painting in terms of size and in brilliance of colour and effect, the range of subject-matter was broadened to include scenes of country and town life from every part of Britain and, increasingly, from the Continent too. By mid-century the Near East was attracting many of the greatest Victorian watercolourists, including J. E. Lewis, David Roberts and Edward Lear. Other leadingVictorians who regularly worked in watercolour include the Pre-Raphaelite painters John Everett Millais and William Holman Hunt, and the American-born James McNeill Whistler, all of whom are included in this book.

Book Synopsis Understanding Watercolours by : Huon Mallalieu
Download or read book Understanding Watercolours written by Huon Mallalieu and published by Antique Collectors Club Dist. This book was released on 1985 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book acts as a practical introduction to the subject of collecting British watercolour paintings. There is a lot more to collecting than noting just the price, the name of the artist and deciding whether or not one likes the subject. Many watercolours are either not signed or bear false signatures, or perhaps have been saddled with misleading attributions. The text and carefully chosen illustrations take collectors behind the formal signature on the picture and show them what to look for in it, the idiosyncrasies of the artist, his style and his individual methods of working. Yet even when all the technical points are understood there remains the whim of fashion which varies over long periods and has moved round, ignoring or praising each artist in turn. Without an understanding of the movement of fashion, past collections and ideas on collecting, it would be hard to understand the subject.
Book Synopsis Great British Watercolors by : Matthew Hargraves
Download or read book Great British Watercolors written by Matthew Hargraves and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul Mellon (1907--1999) assembled one of the world’s greatest collections of British drawings and watercolors. In his memoirs he wrote of their “beauty and freshness… their immediacy and sureness of technique, their comprehensiveness of subject matter, their vital qualities, their Englishness.” This catalogue celebrating the centenary of Mellon's birth features eighty-eight outstanding watercolors from the fifty thousand works of art on paper with which he endowed the Yale Center for British Art. The selection spans the emergence of watercolor painting in the mid-18th century to its apogee in the mid-19th. These works highlight the diversity of British watercolors, showcasing both landscape and figurative works by some of the principal artists working in the medium, including Thomas Gainsborough, Thomas Rowlandson, William Blake, and J. M.W. Turner.

Download or read book Urban Watercolor Sketching written by Felix Scheinberger and published by Watson-Guptill. This book was released on 2014-03-25 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A guide that shows painters, drawers, doodlers, and urban sketchers how to bring their drawings to life with colorful, bold, yet accessible painting methods. Watercolor sketching is a rapidly emerging technique that enlivens sketches done in pen or pencil with the expressive washes, glazes, and luminous hues of watercolor . This lushly illustrated resource teaches artists on the go how to sketch with watercolor, rendering subjects efficiently and without inhibitions. Readers are guided through all aspects of the medium, from fundamental techniques including wet-on-wet, glazing, and washes; materials and supplies; and little known tips and tricks for getting the most out of watercolor (for example, just sprinkling a little salt on your painting creates a texture that's impossible to achieve with a brush.) A strong focus color theory provides a solid foundation for enhancing drawings with vibrant hues.

Book Synopsis The Discovery of Paris by : Stephen Duffy
Download or read book The Discovery of Paris written by Stephen Duffy and published by Paul Holberton Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some of the finest views of Paris ever painted were produced by British artists working in watercolor in the early nineteenth century. With the ending of many years of war, first at the Peace of Amiens of 1802-03 and then after the final defeat of Napoleon at Waterloo, Paris was an irresistible attraction for thousands of British tourists, among whom were many painters. There was an unprecedented interest in views of the city, and artists, such as Girtin, Bonington, Turner and David Cox, responded to this enthusiasm with an extraordinary range of works, from simple pencil views to the most elaborate watercolors, some for sale and exhibition, but many also for engraving as illustrations in guides and souvenir publications. This catalogue, accompanying a major exhibition at the Wallace Collection, discusses and illustrates more than sixty works by over twenty artists. It will appeal not only to those interested in British watercolor painting but also to anyone interested in the history of one of the greatest of all cities.
