Book excerpt: Having already published short stories or, as John O'Loughlin (with his philosophical bias) prefers to call them, 'short prose' in two volumes of 'Collected Short Prose', viz. Two Sides of the Same Coin & Tales Side Up, the former of which included, as per custom back then, an aphoristic appendix, this author decided to republish them in one volume (minus the aphorisms) for convenience's sake, in the interests, one might say, of structural and thematic continuity together with a certain prosy purism that sets definite bounds to the scope and style of the contents, dovetailed, as they are, into a somewhat voluminous but nonetheless highly accessible project whose material spans the period 1976–84, during which virtually all of his fictional writings, including several novels, or works of 'long prose', were composed. – A Centretruths Editorial

Book excerpt: Nobel Prize winner Samuel Beckett was one of the most profoundly original writers of the 20th century. He gave expression to the anguish and isolation of the individual consciousness with a purity and minimalism that have altered the shape of world literature. A tremendously influential poet and dramatist, Beckett spoke of his prose fiction as the "important writing," the medium in which he distilled his ideas most powerfully. Here, for the first time, his short prose is gathered in a definitive, complete volume by leading Beckett scholar S. E. Gontarski.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everyone knows that Bertolt Brecht was one of the great 20th-century innovators in theatre - the literary-theatrical equivalent of a Picasso or Stravinsky - and Germany's greatest poet of the last century, but the playwright was also a dazzling writer of stories. Storytelling permeated his art as a dramatist; fundamentally in his plays he was a storyteller. This volume collects the complete short stories written by Brecht, including the prize-winning 'The Monster', and the fragmentary memoir ghost-written by Brecht, 'Life Story of the boxer Samson-Körner'. Brecht scholar Marc Silberman provides an introduction and editorial notes. Fans of Brecht will find in the 37 stories assembled here the same directness, lack of affectation, and wry humour that characterise his plays. Every lover of short stories will discover an unexpected trove of pleasure in this "mine for short-story addicts" (Observer).

Book excerpt: At the age of nineteen, I left college at New York University after deciding that I did not want to be an electrical engineer and that I would not make the varsity basketball team. That meant two years in the army. It was an exciting test of my ability to function away from home. This was very late 1952. There was a war on in the Far East. My Uncle Sam decided that, being tall and strong, I would make good rifleman. After making me what he had proposed, he sent me to Korea to test my skills. They were sufficient to stay alive during the last few months leading to the truce. It was signed on July 27, 1953. I was sent to division headquarters on a mission that eludes my memory. But I did remember that I wanted to get out of the infantry company. The division newspaper beckoned, and the noncom in charge decided that I wrote well enough to join his staff. Besides, he needed someone with frontline experience. I became a cub reporter and, later, an official US Army correspondent. I began to read voraciously, starting with Ernie Pyle and Hemingway. I found my passion. The GI Bill allowed me to study, then give up journalism in favor of literature and the theater as a playwright and director. Circumstances in 1958 caused me to stop my pursuit of theater and to make a living for a family. I’ve never regretted that decision. A vacation visit to the Korean War Memorial in the year 2000 in Washington, D.C., awakened my desire to pick up the pen again. It started with minor poetry, one-act plays, short stories, and this novella. My protagonists are often soldiers, past , present, or future. However, I don’t write war stories. I only know how war can effect the minds of those who experienced it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edgar Award-winning author Dana Stabenow is best known for her Kate Shugak series of crime novels, but the unifying protagonist of almost all her writing, be it crime, fantasy, horror, or science fiction, is Alaska. This genre-spanning collection of sixteen short stories features familiar characters like Kate and Jim, Liam and Wy, and Bill and Moses, but also ranges farther afield than many readers will expect, leaping from modern-day Anchorage to twenty-second-century Mars to the fantasy kingdom of Mnemosynea. Remarkably disparate, but indisputably Stabenow, a writer whose fertile imagination is anything but predictable. Titles in this collection are 'Nooses Give', 'Conspiracy', 'Under the Influence', 'Wreck Rights', 'Cherchez la Femme', 'Siren Song', 'The Eyak Interpreter', 'Any Taint of Vice', 'On the Evidence', 'Missing, Presumed...', 'The Perfect Gift', 'Gold Fever', 'Cheechako', 'No Place Like Home', 'Justice is a Two-Edged Sword', and 'A Woman's Work'. Newly added in this edition, find 'Collected Essays' and 'Dana on Writing' as well.
