Book excerpt: In the world of psychoanalysis, the late Otto Fenichel was pre-eminently distinguished for brilliant observation, tireless energy, and skill. Otto Fenichel's highly significant essays explore many subjects that were only touched on in his books. Many of these discussions, present-day classics in their fields, are comprehensive monographs in themselves. Often so much is brought to bear on the central topic from so many sources, and then related so clearly to the context, that these essays become works of reference for a much larger field. It is a contribution of the greatest value to preserve and make conveniently available so much that is intensely useful from the life work of this remarkable man.

Book excerpt: "The Handbook of Humanistic Psychology presents a historic overview, theory, methodology, applications to practice and to broader settings, and an epilogue for the new millennium...The Handbook of Humanistic Psychology is an academic text excellently suited for collegiate education and research...The Handbook of Humanistic Psychology will be the inspiration and reference source for the next generation of humanists in all fields." - Lynn Seiser, Ph.D., THE THERAPIST "This volume represents an essential milestone and defining moment for humanistic psychology.... [It] belongs on the shelf of everyone who identifies with the humanistic movement and can serve as an excellent resource for those who would like to offer their students more than the perfunctory three paragraphs designated to humanistic psychology found in most introductory psychology books" -Donadrian Rice, CONTEMPORARY PSYCHOLOGY "Psychologists already partial to humanistic perspectives will take great pleasure in reading this book, and those seeking to expand their understanding of psychological humanism will find themselves much informed, perhaps even inspired, by it." - Irving B. Weiner, PSYCHOTHERAPY RESEARCH "A cornucopia of valuable historical, theoretical, and practical information for the Humanistic Psychologist." — Irvin Yalom, Emeritus Professor of Psychiatry, Stanford University "The editors represent both the founding generation and contemporary leadership and the contributors they have enlisted include most of the active voices in the humanistic movement. I know of no better source for either insiders or outsiders to grasp what humanistic psychology is about, and what either insiders or outsiders should do about it." — M. Brewster Smith, University of California at Santa Cruz "As a humanist it offered me a breadth I had not known existed, as a researcher it offered me an excellent statement of in depth research procedures to get closer to human experience, as a practitioner it offered me inspiration. For all those who work with and explore human experience, you can not afford to miss the voice of the third force so excellently conveyed in this comprehensive coverage of its unique view of human possibility and how to harness it." — Leslie S. Greenberg, York University Irvin Yalom, M. Brewster Smith, Leslie S. Greenberg, Inspired by James F. T. Bugental′s classic, Challenges of Humanistic Psychology (1967), The Handbook of Humanistic Psychology represents the latest scholarship in the resurgent field of humanistic psychology and psychotherapy. Set against trends toward psychological standardization and medicalization, the handbook provides a rich tapestry of reflection by the leading person-centered scholars of our time. Their range in topics is far-reaching—from the historical, theoretical, and methodological, to the spiritual, psychotherapeutic, and multicultural. Psychology is poised for a renaissance, and this handbook plays a critical role in that transformation. As increasing numbers of students and professionals rebel against mechanizing trends, they are looking for the fuller, deeper, and more personal psychological orientation that this handbook promotes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An anthology of essays examining the nature and practice of sexual masochism The contested psychoanalytic concept of masochism has served to open up pathways into less-explored regions of the human mind and behavior. Here, rituals of pain and sexual abusiveness prevail, and sometimes gruesome details of unconscious fantasies are constructed out of psychological pain, desperate need, and sexually excited, self- destructive violence. In this significant addition to the Essential Papers in Psychoanalysis series, Margaret Ann Fitzpatrick Hanly presents an anthology of the most outstanding writings in the psychoanalytic study of masochism. In bringing these essays together, Dr. Fitzpatrick Hanly expertly combines classic and contemporary theories by the most respected scholars in the field to create a varied and integrated volume. This collection features papers by S. Nacht, R. Loewenstein, Victor Smirnoff, Sigmund Freud, Jacques Laplanche, Robert Bak, Leonard Shengold, K. Novick, J. Novick, S. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within the psychoanalytic framework, there is a growing body of research and thinking about female development. In addition, there is ongoing research within other areas of psychology, such as developmental psychology and social psychology, which has important implications for an understanding of women's adult development. Often these research findings are not readily available to the analytic community, nor has much of the research been incorporated into a psychoanalytic framework. Psychoanalysis and Women broadens analytic thinking by integrating contemporary literature from psychoanalysis with that of other areas, both within and outside psychology, which has implications for the undertanding of women's development. This literature is conceptualized within a psychoanalytic framework. A basic premise underlying this book is that psychoanalysis needs continuing review and revision in terms of what women and men are about and a continuing focus on whether and how unfounded biases prevent analysts from understanding patients. The present volume considers how sexism and feminism are affecting psychoanalysis and exemplifies how the emerging field of psychoanalysis of women and the issues its existence raises should be conceptualized. It also exemplifies some of the positive contributions that a feminist outlook gives to the study of human behavior and should esxpand the range of hypotheses that we have about people.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Available for the first time in English, this is the definitive account of the practice of sexual slavery the Japanese military perpetrated during World War II by the researcher principally responsible for exposing the Japanese government's responsibility for these atrocities. The large scale imprisonment and rape of thousands of women, who were euphemistically called "comfort women" by the Japanese military, first seized public attention in 1991 when three Korean women filed suit in a Toyko District Court stating that they had been forced into sexual servitude and demanding compensation. Since then the comfort stations and their significance have been the subject of ongoing debate and intense activism in Japan, much if it inspired by Yoshimi's investigations. How large a role did the military, and by extension the government, play in setting up and administering these camps? What type of compensation, if any, are the victimized women due? These issues figure prominently in the current Japanese focus on public memory and arguments about the teaching and writing of history and are central to efforts to transform Japanese ways of remembering the war. Yoshimi Yoshiaki provides a wealth of documentation and testimony to prove the existence of some 2,000 centers where as many as 200,000 Korean, Filipina, Taiwanese, Indonesian, Burmese, Dutch, Australian, and some Japanese women were restrained for months and forced to engage in sexual activity with Japanese military personnel. Many of the women were teenagers, some as young as fourteen. To date, the Japanese government has neither admitted responsibility for creating the comfort station system nor given compensation directly to former comfort women. This English edition updates the Japanese edition originally published in 1995 and includes introductions by both the author and the translator placing the story in context for American readers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A basic issue for all those essaying to write comprehensive texts on the nature of psychoanalysis, whether oriented primarily to the exposition of the theory or of the technique of psychoanalysis, - within the American literature the books by Brenner and by Greenson come to mind as exemplars of the two categories - is that of the relationship of the theory to the technique and the practice. This issue is however not always brought into explicit focus in this literature and thereby its problematic nature as a fundamental and not yet satisfactorily re solved dilemma of our discipline is often glossed over, or even by passed completely, as if we could comfortably assume that Freud had, uniquely in the world's intellectual history, fully succeeded in creating a science and a discipline in which the theory (the understanding) and the therapy (i. e. , the cure) were inherently together and truly the same, but two sides of the same coin.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on a broad range of psychoanalytic, cultural and social influences, the author examines the concept of toxic masculinity for how it brings into focus a widespread anxiety about toxicity throughout daily life: In nature, society and personal relationships. Aggressive, misogynistic masculinity has become a major topic in recent years, spreading throughout popular culture, the media and research. Often called 'phallic,' it simmers in everyday life and hits the headlines for turning florid and violent in maintaining its dominance, especially towards women. But at the extreme, phallic masculinity has recently crystallized in a very different form, as toxic masculinity, and 'toxic' has become the near-universal epithet for all forms of extreme destructiveness in a 'toxic culture.' It has brought into focus, and named as masculine, an anxiety over toxicity in every corner of everyday life. Exploring toxic masculinity in depth brings out a misogynistic current that pervades individual and social realms, but also throws a sharp light on normal masculinity. By elaborating on the roots of this toxicity, Figlio is able to draw out a different, more positive alternative for masculinity, with particular reference to the underlying fears around fertility and the seminal. With a strong research and clinical base, this book is essential reading for all psychoanalysts and psychoanalytic psychotherapists and cultural and social theorists interested in exploring concepts of masculinity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now facing its second century, the field of psychoanalysis is in a period of rapid development. In this book some of the most important figures in psychoanalysis today discuss how changes—especially in such areas as infant research, ethology, cognitive psychology, narrative studies, and neurobiology—have affected or might affect the directions in which their discipline will go in the next hundred years.
