Download or read book Collage written by Katherine Hoffman and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Collage is neither genre or art movement, yet it has had a profound impact upon art of the twentieth century. Far more than Picasso's pasted papers or the layering of images upon images, collage challenges concepts of realism, abstraction, time, dimension, and perspective. As a means of artistic expression it has persisted and expanded to incorporate the increasing sophistication and complexity of image production. The representation of images simultaneously from multiple angles--experimentations out of which collage developed in the early part of our century--takes on increasingly deeper meanings when applied to literature, cinema, photography, music, and video art--all beneficiaries of collage. In Collage: Critical Views art historian Katherine Hoffman has assembled a rich 'collage' of perspectives on the art form. Classic articles by noted art historians and critics including Clement Greenberg, Donald Kuspit, Harold Rosenberg, and Robert Rosenblum are juxtaposed with more recent contributions by Patricia Leighten, Charlotte Stokes, Annegreth Nill, and Gregory Ulmer as well as with articles published here for the first time by such artists as Miriam Schapiro, Richard Newman, and Paul Vangelisti to suggest the range of impact collage has had on twentieth-century artistic expression. With an introductory overview and notes preceding each chapter, Hoffman offers an invaluable collection to scholars, artists, and historians of the twentieth century, unfolding the social, political, philosophical, aesthetic, and technological components and interpretations that make clear collage's pervasive legacy to twentieth-century art." -- Provided by publisher

Book Synopsis Olde Hut Ulft 3 by : Karin Karrenberg

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. English The collages in this book were pasted together on photographs the artist Karin Karrenberg had taken in two thousand and twelve in the large factory hall of the old foundry Diepenbrock and Reigers iron foundry (DRU) from the eighteenth century in Ulft in the Netherlands. She captured the traces of the past photographically. Pictures were created which, in the sense of Max Ernst's definition, create absurd, surreal pictorial situations. They pose Hieronymus-Bosch-like riddles or visualize thoughts or play on words. Many of the images have complex contents that could evoke ideas of plays or stage sets, or provide inspiration for a novel. The contents remain in the realm of allusions. The viewer gets involved in contingencies, double-meanings and indeterminacies.
Book Synopsis Robert Desnos by : Marie-Claire Barnet
Download or read book Robert Desnos written by Marie-Claire Barnet and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2006 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: « Ce n'est pas la poésie qui doit être libre, c'est le poète. » A legendary figure within the Surrealist movement, Robert Desnos (1900-1945) has left a unique legacy as a poet of distinction, as a 'dormeur éveillé' revered by his fellow Surrealists, and as a free spirit par excellence. In celebrating Desnos's unique creative voice, this book re-evaluates his prominence within and beyond the Surrealist movement, reappraises his status as a poet, and sheds new light on his contribution to the literary and cultural life of his age. The essays in the volume reflect the ongoing vitality and relevance of Desnos's poetry and the originality of his contribution to the various other forms of expression in which he excelled: journalism, short stories, script-writing and song-writing. Desnos's extensive writings on art and artists, his active involvement in avant-garde film and his close associations with a number of renowned painters are also addressed. This fresh look at Desnos's activities and contexts includes an interview with the artist Georges Malkine's daughter, Fern Malkine-Falvey, and a study of the memoirs of Desnos's wife, Youki. The volume closes with a rare collection of journalistic writings by Desnos which appeared in Le Soir in the late 1920s and have never appeared in print since their original publication.
Book Synopsis Jean-Michel Alberola (English edition) by : Jean-Michel Alberola

This book was released on 2018-10-10T00:00:00+02:00 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Political, poetic, committed, profound: Jean-Michel Alberola’s oeuvre is an artist’s reaction to reality, human feelings and the state of the world. His exhibition at the Palais de Tokyo triggers a voyage that stimulates the eye and the mind as it maps the underappreciated diversity of his work. Associating bodily and geographical fragments with ambiguous statements and injunctions, this major and utterly distinctive figure on the French art scene shapes rebuses that challenge both our way of seeing and the role of art in society. And yet, in its intermingling of artistic speculation and political questioning, and of conceptualism, abstraction and figuration, Alberola’s unique, hard-hitting oeuvre is never without its touch of humour. Book contents - “Adding Up the Details: Chapter 1”: A text by Jean-Michel Alberola. - “The Crossing and the Passeur”: A conversation between Jean-Michel Alberola and Katell Jaffrès, curator of Jean-Michel Alberola’s solo exhibition at the Palais de Tokyo. - “He Who is Taking Himself by Surprise”: An essay by Dominique Païni. About the authors - Katell Jaffrès is a curator at the Palais de Tokyo. - Dominique Païni is a critic, a writer and a curator. He has written numerous publications focusing on the connection between cinema and fine arts.
