Book excerpt: His best friend has moved away, the school bully, picks on him and his overprotective parents won't even let him have a dog! It's no wonder fifth-grader Colin Masterson spends his afternoons lying on his back in his parents hay fields, watching a golden eagle flying free in the wide Montana sky. Colin, the loner, finds his private world invaded by a new girl in school, red-haired Janet Mitchell who is bold and friendly and has the bluest eyes Colin has ever seen. Janet shows Colin how to deal with Billy Tucker, and even encourages the two boys to become friends. To Colin's amazement, he likes Billy well enough to invite him for a sleepover. When the boys discover the eagle lying unconscious in a snow bank in Colin`s back yard one snowy afternoon, they decide to try to nurse her back to health while hiding her in Colin's hay barn. They take turns feeding her water-soaked bread; Colin kills one of the family's chickens to feed her. Then one attempt at finding food for the eagle turns disastrous, when Colin and Billy get lost in a blizzard in the family's hay fields. Now, the new friends must learn to set aside any differences they still have for each other if they have any hope of finding their way back to the warmth and comfort of Colin's home.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One educator's story detailing a cross-Canada run to inspire students and teachers to get outside and experience the benefits and beauty of nature. You'd think starting a non-profit organization aimed at getting young people to spend less time in front of screens and more time outside would be difficult enough. But with a decrepit support vehicle housing two dogs that despised each other, a good friend who left after five months, a lot of peanut butter, and a hope to inspire thousands of students, Colin Harris decided to start this journey by running 7600 kilometres, the equivalent of 181 marathons, across Canada. And to ensure this was a truly Canadian venture, he started in the bleak and snowy month of January. Take Me Outside is Colin's story of spending nine months running from St. John's, Newfoundland, to Victoria, British Columbia, visiting over 80 schools along the way to engage with 20,000 students about the importance of spending time outside learning, playing, and exploring in the Canadian landscape. With one of the biggest and best backyards in the world, people across Canada are spending the vast majority of their time inside. Yet, our identity as Canadians has always been rooted in our relationship with the outdoors. This wildly entertaining book not only recounts what it's like to run across the world's second-largest country but also implores readers of all ages to reignite their connection with the natural world.

Book excerpt: At 13 years old, Catherine Hepburn is described by her friends as the prettiest girl in the county. However, the description favoured by her family is that of a good girl with big ears. In fact, her mother and housekeeper often take the time to help Catherine style her hair in a manner to help hide her big ears. Gifted by her Uncle Nicholas with a diary one Christmas, Catherine begins to record in it the events and circumstances involving the lives of her family and friends. Unknowingly, she records the events of the Hidden, children of noble birth who are hidden in common households until they are of an age to inherit their nobility. At 25 years old, trying to realize her dream as the CEO and Founder of the National Paralegal Foundation is a daunting task for Simone Devereaux. Her days are spent caring for her mother who suffers from a hereditary mental disorder. Her nights are spent in the arms of her fianc, District Attorney Jacque Parker and her lover, trust attorney Wolf Carlyle. On the death of her grandfather, Simone inherits his private library which contains an extensive collection of books known as the Diary of the Beloved written by Catherine Hepburn, her mother's college roommate. As she reads the diaries to her mother, soon it becomes clear to Simone that Catherine's diaries hold the secrets of the Hidden, children of noble birth who are hidden amongst commoners until they are of an age to inherit their nobility. With the help of her fianc and her lover, Simone must learn the identities of the hidden in order to save the life of her mother.

Book excerpt: Henri Peyre (1901-1988), a giant figure in French studies, did more to introduce Americans to the modern literature and culture of French than any other person. Sterling Professor and chair of the French Department of Yale University for more than four decades, Peyre was also the author of forty-four books, a brilliant speaker, and a mentor to two generations of students. He left enormous legacies as both teacher and scholar. Peyre also left a large and fascinating body of correspondence. This collection of his letters documents the era in which he lived. His lively letters also bear witness to the vast network of his friends and colleagues, including such major post-war literary figures as Robert Penn Warren, Andre Gide, and Andre Malraux.
