Book excerpt: In Colin Quinn's new book, the popular comedian, social commentator, and star of the shows Red State Blue State and Unconstitutional tackles the condition of our union today. Utah: The Church of States Vermont: The Old Hippie State Florida: The Hot Mess State Arizona: The Instagram Model State Wisconsin: The Diet Starts Tomorrow State The United States is in a fifty-states-wide couples’ counseling session, thinking about filing for divorce. But is that really what we want? Can a nation composed of states that are so different possibly hang together? Colin Quinn, comedian, social commentator, and writer and star of Red State Blue State and Unconstitutional, calls us out state-by-state, from Connecticut to Hawaii. He identifies the hypocrisies inherent in what we claim to believe and what we actually do. Within a framework of big-picture thinking about systems of government—after all, how would you put this country together if you started from scratch today?—to dead-on observations about the quirks and vibes of the citizens in each region, Overstated skewers us all: red, blue, and purple. It’s ultimately infused with the same blend of optimism and practicality that sparked the U.S. into being.
Book Synopsis The Struggle to Survive by : Raafay Awan
Download or read book The Struggle to Survive written by Raafay Awan and published by Raafay Awan. This book was released on with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of writing this book is to encapsulate the journey of PSL from long before it began to where it is now. By no means I am an expert on the league nor do I have any inside knowledge about things, but the only reason I have written it is because as a fan, it is just unbelievable to look at how this league has become so important to Pakistan. But more importantly to Pakistanis who have wholeheartedly owned it and can proudly call Pakistan Super League, a league of their own. I have tried my best to cover all the important and non-important moments that have taken place since the first day when the idea of this league first originated. This book is up to date as of 22nd of June, 2021. But the aim is to keep adding to the book with each passing season of the Pakistan Super League. The plan is therefore to add new chapters in years to come and write down about all the significant and insignificant events of this amazing league which has become so critical to Pakistan, its people and the image of the country around the world. While I hope that the coming years bring so much more happiness and positivity. I am sure about one thing; that with all the ups and downs, the hurdles, and the typical Pakistani unpredictability, the next editions of the league will be as interesting as the previous ones, if not more, and there will be so much to write and so much to cover, something that I am extremely excited and looking forward to doing.

Book Synopsis Once Upon a Time Traveler by : Joshua Light
Download or read book Once Upon a Time Traveler written by Joshua Light and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2014-11-11 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three brilliant scientists harness the power to fold time and visit the past and future like a common tourist. One scientist formulates a tour of Biblical events because he believes in God, but the tour is reluctantly and accidentally traveled by a scientist who does not. What will unbelieving eyes see, and how will they interpret the most significant supernatural events of all time? The tour embraces world history from the beginning of creation and into the future, where Biblical prophecy tells us that dangerous people will control the whole world, countless millions of people will evaporate, and society will plunge into darkness. What if a time traveler visited just two years into the future after the Biblical Prophetic clock has already started ticking? And then catapulted into the past, where Earth is like another planet entirely? What kind of world, and what kind of tribulation would he find? And as an unbeliever, how would he respond to it? Light deals with the issues of Biblical prophecy, recent young-earth creation, a literal and startling twist on how things were, and how things will be. Set aside the notions of being left behind, and embrace the idea of being brought along, in the circuits of Earth’s end-to-end timeline. Enter a future we’d rather forget, and a history that nobody remembers.

Download or read book Pox Romana written by Colin Elliott and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2024-02-06 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A wide-ranging and dramatic account of the Antonine plague, the mysterious disease that struck the Roman Empire at its pinnacle In the middle of the second century AD, Rome was at its prosperous and powerful apex. The emperor Marcus Aurelius reigned over a vast territory that stretched from Britain to Egypt. The Roman-made peace, or Pax Romana, seemed to be permanent. Then, apparently out of nowhere, a sudden sickness struck the legions and laid waste to cities, including Rome itself. This fast-spreading disease, now known as the Antonine plague, may have been history’s first pandemic. Soon after its arrival, the Empire began its downward trajectory toward decline and fall. In Pox Romana, historian Colin Elliott offers a comprehensive, wide-ranging account of this pivotal moment in Roman history. Did a single disease—its origins and diagnosis still a mystery—bring Rome to its knees? Carefully examining all the available evidence, Elliott shows that Rome’s problems were more insidious. Years before the pandemic, the thin veneer of Roman peace and prosperity had begun to crack: the economy was sluggish, the military found itself bogged down in the Balkans and the Middle East, food insecurity led to riots and mass migration, and persecution of Christians intensified. The pandemic exposed the crumbling foundations of a doomed Empire. Arguing that the disease was both cause and effect of Rome’s fall, Elliott describes the plague’s “preexisting conditions” (Rome’s multiple economic, social, and environmental susceptibilities); recounts the history of the outbreak itself through the experiences of physician, victim, and political operator; and explores postpandemic crises. The pandemic’s most transformative power, Elliott suggests, may have been its lingering presence as a threat both real and perceived.
