Book excerpt: For generations, doctors have been diagnosing babies with colic, offering little comfort and few solutions to worried, weary parents. But recent medical advances made through cutting-edge technology now reveal that many if not most cases of colic are actually caused by acid reflux. In this revolutionary book, Bryan Vartabedian, a noted pediatric gastroenterologist and the father of two babies with acid reflux, provides hands-on, practical advice about this hidden epidemic–and how to make your own baby happy again. • Recognize the seven signs of reflux in infancy. • Discover the role of milk protein allergy–the other colic. • Learn what, when, and how to feed an irritable baby and the best positions for sleep. • Recognize the role of formula, breast milk, bottle systems, burping, and pacificers in your baby’s fussiness, and irritability. • Understand when and why your baby may need testing for reflux. Weigh the pros and cons of available treatment options. Identify when a specialist is needed and where to find one. Complete with inspiring real-life cases of colic solved, plus tips, sidebars, and illustrations, this essential guide provides real answers to a problem that has been upsetting babies–and parents–for years. Help and hope are at hand! “This is the book for every parent whose young baby is a ‘bundle of misery,’ in pain, and hard to feed, and for that baby’s pediatrician, too.” –Laura Nathanson, M.D., F.A.A.P., author of The Portable Pediatrician “Great news for exhausted parents and for suffering babies! Colic Solved gets to the root of what is making many babies cry, and offers powerful, real-world solutions. This is a must-have book for desperate parents everywhere.” –Alan Greene, MD, FAAP, author of From First Kicks to First Steps and founder of DrGreene.com

Book excerpt: When a baby has too much gas in his stomach he feels pain and discomfort. This is the reason why a colicky baby never stops crying even during the daytime. Baby's crying is his way to communicate his pain. The gas in his stomach irritates him, he cannot get uninterrupted sleep and therefore needs mommy to ease his discomfort for him.Caring for a baby with colic can really wear down your patience what with all the loud crying and lack of sleep. As a parent, you need to understand that your child is not feeling well. In order to help ease his pain and discomfort you will first need to understand what colic is all about and how it can be alleviated. An indication that your baby is colicky is if he keeps on crying. A normal newborn baby seldom cries, if he does it is because he needs to be fed or needs his diaper changed and when those needs are met he settles down again and falls back to sleep. Colicky babies, on the other hand, will cry for more than 3 hours at a time, if not every day, then at least 3 days per week. It is difficult to soothe him, in spite of tending to all his needs he still remains fussy and sometimes will even cause uproar until there is relief to his irritation. However, a wary parent will always take into consideration that not all the crying might mean that baby has gas. Colic has a set of symptoms and there have been many cases where colic has been wrongly diagnosed. If you feel that there might be other reasons for baby's fussiness, you should never hesitate to consult with your pediatrician.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perfect for expecting parents who want to provide a soothing home for the newest member of their family, The Happiest Baby on the Block, the national bestseller by respected pediatrician and child development expert Dr. Harvey Karp, is a revolutionary method for calming a crying infant and promoting healthy sleep from day one. In perhaps the most important parenting book of the decade, Dr. Harvey Karp reveals an extraordinary treasure sought by parents for centuries --an automatic “off-switch” for their baby’s crying. No wonder pediatricians across the country are praising him and thousands of Los Angeles parents, from working moms to superstars like Madonna and Pierce Brosnan, have turned to him to learn the secrets for making babies happy. Never again will parents have to stand by helpless and frazzled while their poor baby cries and cries. Dr. Karp has found there IS a remedy for colic. “I share with parents techniques known only to the most gifted baby soothers throughout history …and I explain exactly how they work.” In a innovative and thought-provoking reevaluation of early infancy, Dr. Karp blends modern science and ancient wisdom to prove that newborns are not fully ready for the world when they are born. Through his research and experience, he has developed four basic principles that are crucial for understanding babies as well as improving their sleep and soothing their senses: ·The Missing Fourth Trimester: as odd as it may sound, one of the main reasons babies cry is because they are born three months too soon. ·The Calming Reflex: the automatic reset switch to stop crying of any baby in the first few months of life. ·The 5 “S’s”: the simple steps (swaddling, side/stomach position, shushing, swinging and sucking) that trigger the calming reflex. For centuries, parents have tried these methods only to fail because, as with a knee reflex, the calming reflex only works when it is triggered in precisely the right way. Unlike other books that merely list these techniques Dr. Karp teaches parents exactly how to do them, to guide cranky infants to calm and easy babies to serenity in minutes…and help them sleep longer too. ·The Cuddle Cure: the perfect mix the 5 “S’s” that can soothe even the most colicky of infants. In the book, Dr. Karp also explains: What is colic? Why do most babies get much more upset in the evening? How can a parent calm a baby--in mere minutes? Can babies be spoiled? When should a parent of a crying baby call the doctor? How can a parent get their baby to sleep a few hours longer? Even the most loving moms and dads sometimes feel pushed to the breaking point by their infant’s persistent cries. Coming to the rescue, however, Dr. Karp places in the hands of parents, grandparents, and all childcare givers the tools they need to be able to calm their babies almost as easily as…turning off a light. Parents have been searching for this remarkable gem for ages. It makes sense that she has been praised by hundreds of other parents, caregivers and working mothers . Parents won't have to watch helplessly and stressed out as their precious baby screams all the time again.Ruth has discovered that there is a cure for colic. "I teach parents strategies that have historically only been used by the most talented infant soothers. Then I go over how they operate in detail." In a novel and provocative reappraisal of the early years, combines contemporary research with traditional knowledge to demonstrate that infants are not entirely prepared for the outside world at birth. She has discovered four fundamental ideas via her study and expertise that are essential to comprehending infants, enhancing their sleep, and calming their senses: Parents have tried and failed with these approaches for generations. In contrast to other publications that only list these methods, Ruth shows parents how to use them and helps them assist their grumpy babies become peaceful and easy babies in a matter of minutes-not to mention sleep longer. The ideal combination of the five "S's," known as "The Cuddle Cure," may calm even the most fussy newborns. Ruth also defines the following in the book: * What is colic? * In only a few minutes, how can a parent soothe a baby? * When is the right time to contact the doctor for a wailing baby's parents? * How can a parent help their child sleep for an additional few hours? The incessant screams of their newborn may sometimes drive even the most devoted parents to the brink of despair. But Ruth steps in to save the day, giving parents, grandparents, and other caregivers the means to be able to soothe their infants with the ease of just turning off a light.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides pregnant women and new parents with evidence-based information on pregnancy and parenting. Most parenting books advise pregnant women or new parents what to do and, at best, defend that advice by citing recommendations from highly selected “experts” or equally selective “studies.” Some parents prefer an advice book, but an increasing number do not trust the advice they receive unless they are convinced of its scientific backing. Dr. Kramer does not tell pregnant women or new parents what they should or should not do. Instead, he focuses on controversial decision choices for which recommendations and practices differ substantially. He systematically reviews and synthesizes the available scientific evidence bearing on those choices, summarizes the strengths and weaknesses of that evidence, and translates the summaries in a way that encourages parents to make their own informed decisions. He summarizes the risks and benefits of different decision options, as well as the degree of certainty around them. The risks and benefits then need to be valued by the individual parent and balanced against the effort and financial costs incurred by the decision. Beyond Parenting Advice does not cover every conceivable topic relevant to pregnancy, infancy, and childhood. Instead, it focuses on key controversial areas with abundant but conflicting advice and information. The book’s contents are organized into four sections: an initial section comprising two introductory chapters and one section each devoted to topics concerning pregnancy, infancy/toddlerhood, and childhood/adolescence. Each topic is limited to one chapter. The two introductory chapters are short but dense. They are essential, however, to understand the scientific concepts and vocabulary used in the evidence review of each topic area. After reading the two initial chapters, the rest of the book can actually be used like an encyclopedia. In other words, the reader should be able to read and understand any later chapter in the book, or even a short section from any chapter. Despite the chronological order of pregnancy and the aging child, the topic chapters in sections 2-4 could have been written, and can be read, in any order. An initial Reference Tools section provides a glossary and reproduces a diagram and two tables that define unfamiliar words and concepts. Armed with the information provided in this book, different parents will make different decisions. But those decisions will be informed decisions—not blind obedience to a book, blog, health provider, friend, family, or public health authority. Moreover, the skills that parents acquire in reading this book will help them throughout their lives in critically evaluating new information relevant to health, science, and technology.

Results of recent research studies are described and practical suggestions for coping with colic are provided. Recommendations based on the experiences of parents of colicy infants are made on feeding the colicky infant, treating colic with medication, and soothing the infant.
