This book is another paradigm that expands the debate and places Douglass's thought in a more appropriate context, namely anticipating liberation theology. Since no consensus exists about Douglass's philosophical and theological development, Reginald F. Davis attempts to settle a dispute in Douglass studies that revolves around his religious odyssey and in particular the character and cause of his philosophical and theological development. The dispute among scholars is concerned with where to locate Douglass on the theological spectrum. Some scholars identify Douglass as having moved away from traditional forms of Christian millennialism, which elevates not the human agent but an omnipotent God who apocalyptically intervenes in human affairs and history. Still others interpret Douglass as having moved outside the circle of theism to enlightenment humanism. There is also an unsettled debate about the cause of Douglass's theological shift. One view attributes Douglass's shift to a psychological factor of rejection by White Churchmen over his support for radical policies like abolitionism. Another perspective attributes Douglass's shift to enlightenment principles of natural law and rationality. Davis utilizes selected categories from liberation theology to provide a more accurate exegesis of Douglass's study to encourage a new angle of interpretation of Douglass's philosophical and theological evolution.

You have taken up a set of very interesting and important issues, which relate directly to the theological tasks of the Church in Africa. I appreciate the contributions you are making in this area - informative, challenging and stimulating. They show a good grasp of Biblical knowledge, so that you speak with a good measure of authority. As the book is a collection of essays, each would need to be judged on its own merit. There is no clear flowing link between them, so as to form a unit. I liked especially your treatment of African Cultural Hermeneutics. This area has not received much attention and your essay would be instrumental in opening the way in that direction. I do not feel so comfortable about the essay dealing with African-American Hermeneutics. My general feeling is that this is an area for African Americans to handle, just as areas dealing directly with Africa should be left to us to tackle. The essay on Cush-Africa in the Old Testament is fascinating and informative. You have made a very good case, which, among other things, demolishes the Anti-Africa attitude of many Western scholars. Book excerpt: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam claim to be monotheistic, but none of them actually is; none of the three has yet arrived at the true monotheism the Bible and the Qur'an mandate: that is, belief in there being but One God of All. Each often claims its concept of God is the One God despite the fact that the Bible and the Qur'an insist that the true God is indefinable and incomprehensible. Many passages of the Bible are polytheistic, and yet the Judaism that emerged out of the exile claimed to believe in One God. Critically moving from the older passages through to the later, careful readers are able to trace a process that is best called monotheizing. In effect the first commandment of the Decalogue, the first of Jesus's two great commandments, and the Qur'an's clear mandate fashion an imperative to continue the monotheizing process that is not yet complete but that enjoins adherents of each to live life in the belief that there is but One God of All.
