Book excerpt: In the late eighteenth century, enlightened politicians and upper-class women in Spain debated the right of women to join one of the country’s most prominent scientific institutions: the Madrid Economic Society of Friends of the Country. Societies such as these, as Elena Serrano describes in her book, were founded on the idea that laypeople could contribute to the advancement of their country by providing “useful knowledge,” and their fellows often referred to themselves as improvers, or friends of the country. After intense debates, the duchess of Benavente, along with nine distinguished ladies, claimed, won, and exercised the right of women to participate in shaping the future of their nation by inaugurating the Junta de Damas de Honor y Mérito, or the Committee of Ladies of Honor and Merit. Ten years later, the Junta established a network of over sixty correspondents extending from Tenerife to Asturias and Austria to Cuba. With this book, Serrano tells the unknown story of how the duchess and her peers—who succeeded in creating the only known female branch among some five hundred patriotic societies in the eighteenth century—shaped Spanish scientific culture. Her study reveals how the Junta, by stressing the value of their feminine nature in their efforts to reform education, rural economy, and the poor, produced and circulated useful knowledge and ultimately crystallized the European improvement movement in Spain within an otherwise all-male context.

Book excerpt: Around 1770 or 1771, Francisco Goya went to Italy for roughly one year. Although it is not known whether he was actually fleeing the Spanish Inquisition, as an artist of his time he was certainly undertaking a pilgrimage to a country in which many (non-Italian) artists had completed their apprenticeships. Myths proliferate about Goya's Italian period. There are tales of his working as an acrobat, romancing a nun and being offering a job as court painter to Catherine the Great. Whatever the truth of these, he certainly came face to face with much inspirational art: Raphael and Michelangelo at the Vatican, Tiepolo, Correggio's frescoes in Parma, plus the Belvedere Torso of Apollonius and the Farnese Hercules of Glykon (both of which he sketched). During this stint, Goya also entered a painting in the Parma Academy competition, winning second prize. But upon his return to Spain, Goya was an artist transformed, liberated from Neoclassicism and free to pursue his own wilder painterly imaginings. By 1774, Goya had gone from anonymity to become Saragossa's most prosperous artist. What was he doing during this murky Italian jaunt? Goya and Italy is the first book to consider this question at length. In its pages, historians have collaborated to recreate the climate of eighteenth-century Rome, to postulate Goya's place in it and to assess the legacy of this shrouded episode in his biography. It will prove an invaluable document for Goya fans.

Taking exception to conventional views that rely mainly on Goya’s darkest images to establish his relevance for modernity, Cascardi argues that the entirety of Goya’s work is engaged in a thoroughgoing critique of the modern social and historical worlds, of which it nonetheless remains an integral part. The book reckons with the apparent gulf assumed to divide the Disasters of War and the so-called Black Paintings from Goya’s scenes of bourgeois life or from the well-mannered portraits of aristocrats, military men, and intellectuals. It shows how these apparent contradictions offer us a gateway into Goya’s critical practice vis-à-vis a European modernity typically associated with the Enlightenment values dominant in France, England, and Germany. In demonstrating Goya’s commitment to the project of critique, Cascardi provides an alternative to established readings of Goya’s work, which generally acknowledge the explicit social criticism evident in works such as the Caprichos but which have little to say about those works that do not openly take up social or political themes. Book excerpt: At various points over the course of the 20th century, the Belgian State and its various ministries and provinces consciously chose to subsidise not only the fine arts but also the applied and decorative arts, and in particular the art of weaving tapestry. On the one hand, orders were placed for World Exhibitions and for Belgian embassies, and on the other competitions were held for tapestries to be hung in important locations such as the United Nations and NATO headquarters, and the exhibitions that were organized by the various ministries over the years. They provided an overview of the ways in which this branch of the arts was changing as well as representative work by the best tapestry designers. The exhibitions organized by the provincial authorities give quite a different image. There were the highly conventional exhibitions of Brabantine tapestries to promote the craftsmanship of the province and there were the more innovative textile exhibitions. Taken as a whole, the commissions, competitions and exhibitions give a good overview of what was happening in Belgium in the field of tapestry over the period 1945-1980. They also make it clear what image was being projected abroad: that of a country with rich traditions, master craftsmanship in weaving, and in the 1970s some affiliation to the latest developments in European textile art.
