Selections range from Mary Shelley's "Transformation" (1830), a pendant to Frankenstein in its themes and motifs, to "Where Their Fire Is Not Quenched" (1922) by May Sinclair, a tale of time travel that follows its heroine to Hell and back. Gripping narratives include Virginia Woolf's "A Haunted House," in which a ghostly couple revisit their former home; "A Wedding Chest" by Vernon Lee, a story of romance and revenge that unfolds in Renaissance Italy; and Charlotte Perkins Gilman's "The Yellow Wallpaper," recounting a woman's psychic possession by the previous occupant of her attic bedroom. Additional tales include E. Nesbit's "From the Dead," "The Eyes" by Edith Wharton, Elizabeth Gaskell's "Curious If True," and many others. Editor S. T. Joshi offers an extensive Introduction as well as notes on each of the authors.

Book excerpt: ÊIt was at a masked ball at the Palais Royal that my fatal quarrel with my first cousin AndrŽ de Brissac began. The quarrel was about a woman. The women who followed the footsteps of Philip of Orleans were the causes of many such disputes; and there was scarcely one fair head in all that glittering throng which, to a man versed in social histories and mysteries, might not have seemed bedabbled with blood. I shall not record the name of her for love of whom AndrŽ de Brissac and I crossed one of the bridges, in the dim August dawn on our way to the waste ground beyond the church of Saint-Germain des PrŽs. There were many beautiful vipers in those days, and she was one of them. I can feel the chill breath of that August morning blowing in my face, as I sit in my dismal chamber at my ch‰teau of Puy Verdun to-night, alone in the stillness, writing the strange story of my life. I can see the white mist rising from the river, the grim outline of the Ch‰telet, and the square towers of Notre Dame black against the pale-grey sky. Even more vividly can I recall AndrŽÕs fair young face, as he stood opposite to me with his two friendsÑscoundrels both, and alike eager for that unnatural fray. We were a strange group to be seen in a summer sunrise, all of us fresh from the heat and clamour of the RegentÕs saloonsÑAndrŽ in a quaint hunting-dress copied from a family portrait at Puy Verdun, I costumed as one of LawÕs Mississippi Indians; the other men in like garish frippery, adorned with broideries and jewels that looked wan in the pale light of dawn. Our quarrel had been a fierce oneÑa quarrel which could have but one result, and that the direst. I had struck him; and the welt raised by my open hand was crimson upon his fair womanish face as he stood opposite to me. The eastern sun shone on the face presently, and dyed the cruel mark with a deeper red; but the sting of my own wrongs was fresh, and I had not yet learned to despise myself for that brutal outrage.

Book excerpt: Mary Elizabeth Braddon (1835-1915) was a British Victorian era popular novelist. She was an extremely prolific writer, producing some 75 novels with very inventive plots. The most famous one is her first novel, Lady Audley's Secret (1862), which won her recognition and fortune as well. The novel has been in print ever since, and has been dramatised and filmed several times. She also founded Belgravia Magazine (1866), which presented readers with serialized sensation novels, poems, travel narratives, and biographies, as well as essays on fashion, history, science. The magazine was accompanied by lavish illustrations and offered readers a source of literature at an affordable cost. She also edited Temple Bar Magazine. Her legacy is tied to the Sensation Fiction of the 1860s. Her other works include: The Octoroon (1861), The Black Band (1861), Aurora Floyd (1863), Eleanor's Victory (1863), Henry Dunbar: A Novel (1864), The Doctor's Wife (1864), Birds of Prey (1867), Charlotte's Inheritance (1868), Fenton's Quest (1871), Milly Darrell and Other Tales (1873), The Golden Calf (1883), Phantom Fortune (1883) and London Pride (1896).

Book excerpt: The story is a work of fiction describing the life of these five main characters; Grady, Noel, Jayson, Mark, and Angel. From high school up to the fast-paced bumpy ride of adult-hood these individuals experience different stages in their relationships; Love triangles, greed, lust, love, heartbreak, deception, desire, loyalty, envy, hate, and even sacrifice. Taking place in the urban City of Maff and the Island of Jamaica, we see how their environment shaped each character separately. Young and misguided in this modern generation where secular codes of conduct and vainly created street philosophy rule their thoughts and behaviors, as the four friends grow, decisions are made that changed not only their friendship and other links but their lives in general. By the story's conclusion, one can see and hopefully learn how the law of karma can be a curse for the simple-minded. As suspense increases through the novel, Cold Embrace shows a great example of how youth and adults alike trap themselves by impulsive actions with the intention to escape from their created hole while not realizing that they are unconsciously digging a deeper one. As the author explains, his book contains a myriad of life lessons for readers of all ages and backgrounds. "Parents and grandparents will be reminded of their own childhoods, or the struggles they faced while rearing their own children. This in itself is already empowering families to develop more positive interactions and foster greater compassion," says Wilson. Continuing, "Teenagers will acquire a better understanding of why it is so important to stay true not only to their selves but to one another, and that the reward of such dedication is of a greater magnitude than any payment a traitor will ever receive. My story also demonstrates how greed and the love of money will inevitably lead a pleasant life to ruins."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scholars have long examined the relationship between nation-states and their "internal others," such as immigrants and ethnoracial minorities. Contested Embrace shifts the analytic focus to explore how a state relates to people it views as "external members" such as emigrants and diasporas. Specifically, Jaeeun Kim analyzes disputes over the belonging of Koreans in Japan and China, focusing on their contested relationship with the colonial and postcolonial states in the Korean peninsula. Extending the constructivist approach to nationalisms and the culturalist view of the modern state to a transnational context, Contested Embrace illuminates the political and bureaucratic construction of ethno-national populations beyond the territorial boundary of the state. Through a comparative analysis of transborder membership politics in the colonial, Cold War, and post-Cold War periods, the book shows how the configuration of geopolitics, bureaucratic techniques, and actors' agency shapes the making, unmaking, and remaking of transborder ties. Kim demonstrates that being a "homeland" state or a member of the "transborder nation" is a precarious, arduous, and revocable political achievement.

Book excerpt: An important figure in the development of crime fiction, Mary Elizabeth Braddon (1835-1915) wrote more than 80 novels, numerous plays, poems, essays and short stories, and edited two magazines during her 55-year literary career. Her bestselling Lady Audley's Secret secured her reputation as a leading "sensation novelist." Though critics called her work immoral, Braddon's novels influenced the detective fiction of the late Victorian period. With entries on all her published writing, characters, relationships and influences, and themes and contexts, as well as numerous illustrations, a career chronology, and a chronological and alphabetical listing of all of her works, this companion to Braddon's mystery fiction is the definitive reference on this provocative but overlooked writer.

The book contains short stories and texts that can best be classified as Dark Fantasy. In addition, the boundaries of esotericism are explored, but the field should not be taken too seriously. Lovers of ancient languages and cryptographers should also find some challenges. The illustrations are also an important element complementing the text.
