Download or read book Col. William Hill's Memoirs of the Revolution (Classic Reprint) written by William Hill and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Col. William Hill's Memoirs of the Revolution As will be seen by the certificate of Thomas Sumter at the end of this volume, Col. Hill placed his manuscript account of his experiences in the campaigns subsequent to the fall of Charles Town in 1780 in the hand of Gen. Sumter, father of the signer of the certificate, at some time prior to the death of Gen. Sumter in 1832. Gen Sumter made some corrections by interlineations and by striking out words, and sometimes inserting others in their stead. These corrections were only to improve the English or to supply words that were evidently omitted; none of the statements made was corrected. It provides a unique glimpse into the administrative operations and inner workings of the army during the American Revolution. Major General William Heath offers rare insights on the war's major military personalities on both the American and British sides. Of particular interest are his wartime interactions with British generals John Burgoyne and William Phillips, as well as Continental Army generals such as George Washington and Charles Lee. Heath's memoir also gives readers a detailed look at the constant struggles faced by the army, including food, supply, personnel and funding shortages, and presents an almost daily chronicle of the tribulations and successes experienced by patriot forces during the war.

Download or read book The Davidson Family of Rural Hill, North Carolina written by Jim Williams and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2020-02-07 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Davidson came to the North Carolina back country circa 1751 as a young man, with his sister and widowed mother. Typical of Scots-Irish settlers, they arrived with little more than basic farming tools, determined to make it on their own terms. Davidson worked hard, prospered, married well and built a plantation on the Catawba River he called Rural Hill. The Davidson's were loyal British citizens who paid their taxes and participated in colonial government. When the Crown's overbearing authority interfered, independence became paramount and Davidson and his neighbors became soldiers in the Revolutionary War. After the war Davidson managed his plantation, created shad fisheries, helped develop the local iron industry with his sons-in-law and was an early planter of cotton. His sons and grandsons, along with their slave families, continuously increased and improved the acreage and became early practitioners of scientific farming. Drawing on public documents, family papers and slave records, this history describes how a fiercely independent family grew their lands and fortunes into a lasting legacy.
