Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The coir industry is the traditional, agro based, labour intensive , small scale cottage industry of Kerala. Although it is one of the foreign exchange earners of India, it is struggling for existence because of varying reasons. Both the Central and State governments are giving priority support programmes in protecting the industry as the poor people from backward classes from coastal belt are solely depending on this industry for their bread. Yet, the government intervention to reorganise the industry on co-operative lines has not achieved the desired results. The coir cooperatives continue to be a poor performer. The coir cooperatives failed drastically to ensure regular employment and better wages to the coir workers. In this context, this book is the outcome of a comprehensive study to understand the performance of coir cooperatives in terms of productivity, covering various factors like, labour, capital, wage, intermediate inputs, productivity, intensity, etc., with a special focus on its elasticity, total factor productivity and profitability. This book consists of six chapters describing the entire body of the research work, including the socio-economic conditions of the coir workers. The book would be of immense use in many ways for the administrators, policy makers, planners, and researchers. The book is a product of a doctoral thesis entitled "Coir Co-operative Societies In Kerala-An Economic Analysis" submitted to the University of Kerala on 31-05-2012. Due to many reasons, the data used in this study could not be made up-to-date, but that does not invalidate the findings and their interpretations presented in this book.

Book excerpt: The book shows how class relations develop and is a consequence of capitalist development of the rural non-agricultural/non-farm sector (RNFS)---seen as the dialectical relation between the forces and relations of production---as mediated by the state, which produces uneven social and spatial outcomes. Central to the framework for this book are four inter-related conceptual building blocks or themes: social relations of production, productive forces, role of the state and concrete development outcomes of capitalist production in RNFS in the context of class and non-class relations of oppressions. These four conceptual themes follow a logical sequence where each concept evolve in specific contexts within the RNFS; while connected to each other in a dialectical manner; and come together to form the central argument of the book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: State re-scaling is the central concept mobilized in this book to interpret the political processes that are producing new economic spaces in India. In the quarter century since economic reforms were introduced, the Indian economy has experienced strong growth accompanied by extensive sectoral and spatial restructuring. This book argues that in this reformed institutional context, where both state spaces and economic geographies are being rescaled, subnational states play an increasingly critical role in coordinating socioeconomic activities. The core thesis that the book defends is that the reform process has profoundly reconfigured the Indian state’s rapport with its territory at all spatial scales, and these processes of state spatial rescaling are crucial for comprehending emerging patterns of economic governance and growth. It demonstrates that the outcomes of India’s new policy regime are not only the product of impersonal market forces, but that they are also the result of endogenous political strategies, acting in conjunction with the territorial reorganisation of economic activities at various scales, ranging from local to global. Extensive empirical case material, primarily from field-based research, is used to support these theoretical assertions. Scholars of political economy, political and economic geography, industrial development, development studies and Asian Studies will find this a stimulating and innovative contribution to the study of the political economy in the developing countries.

Co-operatives today are found in production, consumption, service, credit, marketing and other spheres of country's life. Since it is the age of specialization, each single co-operative aims at catering to a particular need of its members, but with vast developments in the economic sphere, and because of the question of viability of the co-operative efforts, service or multipurpose co-operatives have also been evolved.
