Book excerpt: Coincidence? Or God? You Decide is a collection of episodes the author's family and friends experienced. In each story you will find an interesting and some times a dangerous situation such as a nine passenger six-door Excursion traveling sixty miles an hour on the icy Arkansas River Bridge railing in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Read what happened to the nine fathers inside the vehicle. Decide for yourself if God or luck was with them; and the girl whose foot was mangled in a packing plant accident, or the family who were marvelously saved when the train bridge over the San Rafael River broke and the center portion of the train they were in, fell into the river. In this book you will meet of a man who gave his home to a poor family; and a little boy who lost his father's best knife. His mother prayed, and moments later the boy's brother caught the fish with the knife in its mouth. Did that just happen? You decide. In the days before cell phones, see what happened to a fifteen-year-old boy stranded at Love's Truck Stop in Gallup, New Mexico, 700 miles away from home. You will live through a tornado with the Hightower family in Neosho, Missouri, and shiver with Doña Margarita sitting on her house top during a long stormy night. You will bake with the Children's Christmas Project and learn how much they earned for the Huruma Orphanage in Kenya, Africa, and shout when a man gives Charlotte $500 for a basket of home-made bread. While swimming in Baja California coast, you will struggle with Tim against a strong undercurrent that was dragging him out into the Pacific Ocean. Will Tim see his family again? Were the persons in danger accidentally saved, or did the power and love of God assist them? The author wants you to decide. Both blessing and difficulty will swirl around us as we walk through life. Romans 8: 28 says, "We know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are called according to His purpose."

Book excerpt: After Jesus’s death, when the disciples were hiding in fear of arrest, they gathered to celebrate the feast of Pentecost, together with Jesus’s mother, Mary. What followed was an event that would change their lives and alter the course of Christianity forever. The Power of Pentecost, the Power in Our Hands presents the rich history of the Christian church and the many heresies that have plagued the faith, attempting to destroy it. It examines those who defended the faith in its early years and considers the great gift instituted at the Last Supper, the altar call of love. The study also explores Pentecost, an explosive event that awakened the disciples and allowed them to perform miracles, marking the start of a church that flourished despite persecution. Author Joe L. Caruana also shares testimony about the spiritual experiences that brough him back to the church with a new dynamism. This study reminds us of the truth about several important relevant subjects and seeks to reveal the factors that have made the Catholic Church great and enduring over the centuries.

Making matters worse, they are often portrayed as villains instead of heroes. Stephen Anthony, an Army and National Guard veteran and longtime police officer, explores why suicide is so prevalent among first responders and veterans – and what we can do to give them hope. Learn how to: • encourage the public to view first responders and veterans favorably; • get those considering suicide to seek help; • Overcome problems by relying on faith in God; • see the world through the eyes of someone considering suicide. For sixteen years, the author talked people out of killing themselves – until one day, God had to talk him out of doing to himself what no criminal had been able to achieve. Get answers to why so many first responders and veterans consider and commit suicide – and learn how to save a friend, a loved one, or even yourself.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Blessed, Broken, and Scared. What does that mean? We know that Jesus took bread, blessed it, broke it, and shared it with His friends saying, "This is my body, which will be given for you; do this in memory of me." The Last Supper challenges us to live in such a way that we actually become the sacred food of Jesus Christ for others as we share our lives with them. And that can be scary! Blessed, Broken, and Scared calls the reader to a conversion from living a scared life to living a shared life. It is in sharing our life with others that we find the healing and peace we truly seek. All people are wounded by the world and have areas of hidden brokenness in their life. This book offers hope, healing, and change as it explores the profound implications of God's mercy, forgiveness, and love. "Brian addresses some very important issues in a conversational style that invites you into his book. Let this book, in a "sea of purple," be a place for us to share and be blessed. This book will truly encourage us to be Eucharist for one another." Fr. Martin Schratz OFM Cap. Brian has been sharing his Blessed, Broken, and Scared retreats around the country for years. Now the message has been captured in this book. Here is what some past retreatants have had to say: "Brian opens himself to all and helped us see that our brokenness isn't a deterrent to God's love and healing. Our retreat was truly a special day." "Should be required for today's Christians and Catholics." "One of the best day retreats that I have attended in nearly 40 years! So much to reflect on and put into action." "I have been to many seminars, webinars, retreats and have been blessed to have read many great books, but I have to say...this retreat impacted my life as to learning more about God's will in my life than any other book, resource, event ever has! Thanks be to God!" Brian Pusateri is a Christian author and speaker. Brian felt his life was forever changed when God spoke to his heart while attending a retreat in 2011. With the God-inspired message of mercy and unconditional love, Brian has been impacting others all over the country and around the world with his weekly letters, talks, and retreats. Brian and his wife of 45 years, Mary Beth, live in, and love the Carolina mountains.

Follow the author as she overcomes a debilitating accident and journeys onward to rearrange her life for ministry and service. Through valley and mountaintop experiences, her journey inspires any with tormented spirits, wounded hearts, loss of limb, a loss of trust in people, or a need for change. -Prof. Tom Mullen Flora spares no details about the accident, her reactions to it, or the reactions of others. Delightful are pages in which she tells in quick sentences how she learned to rearrange the house, reorganize her desk, and play the piano with only her left hand. -Pres. Gene Roop Flora uses her wounds not as an easily justifiable spring of bitterness, but as a sweet, healing balm for others. Anyone can read her story, and realize that we are all, at some point, wounded travelers, and that our wounds are meant to be a source of healing for other pilgrims. -Director William Field

Book excerpt: A British clergyman’s wife navigates a too-crowded house during the holiday season in this novel from “a born storyteller” (The Daily Mail). That was the point at which I should've put my foot down. Stamped it hard. Stopped the past repeating itself. But what did I do? I did what Mum used to do in times of crisis. I left the room and went to put the kettle on. Vicky is a reluctant curate’s wife, struggling to come to terms with her own bereavement and her husband’s newfound faith. Then, one Boxing Day, a knock on the door brings her annoying big brother, his teenage son, and a cello into her life, turning her world upside down. With her small terrace house in Penge now fit to burst, Vicky struggles to manage her three children and the joys of everyday family life. As a new threat lurks behind every corner, hope appears in the most unlikely of circumstances. Enchanting, alternately funny, sad, and bittersweet, This Holey Life reminds us that it’s not a race, it’s a journey. “Sophie Duffy is a real find.”—Laurie Graham

Book excerpt: Jonathan Veira is a larger-than-life entertainer, whose career in opera has been matched by his many years as a one-man entertainer, filling some of the UK's largest auditoriums. Here he brings together some of his hilarious and hair-raising experiences, in a perceptive and compassionate account of working with some of the greatest names in the world of opera. Things, basically, will go wrong if they possibly can, from collapsing organ pipes to kamikaze sheep. Directors have the strangest of bright ideas. The entire theatre is plunged into darkness... situations where the cast's capacity for improvisation is stretched to its limits. Meanwhile, JV himself is warmly welcomed - even if he is mistaken for Donny Osmond, Ainslie Herriot or Lenny Henry. Jonathan has told his own story in Finding My Voice.

Book excerpt: Coincidence has been defined as: "A remarkable concurrence of events or circumstances without apparent causal connection." But enough of them and we start to think: "something or someone is involved here. It is only after looking back on my life that I could see what I once thought were a lot of really just neat coincidences were actually encounters with God or small miracles. Do these miracles happen to everyone? I thinks so. In the Bible we read that "...in Him (God) we live and move and have our being"-Acts 17:28 NIV. The problem is that too many of us never see these encounters with God as anything more than just wonderful little coincidences. An alternate possibility: I compare coincidences to what lawyer's call "circumstantial evidence." A good trial lawyer will say that you can build an airtight case on circumstantial evidence. Of course, it takes a lot of it. I submit that our lives are full of "coincidences" or "circumstantial evidence" that God is and that He is at work in and around us. These coincidences are His call for us to see Him and trust Him. Earl was born and reared in the wonderful little town of Vandalia, Missouri. Here he met and married a "farm girl," Pat Robison, to whom he has been very happily married for sixty-two years. He has been blessed with three children and six grandchildren. Earl holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Central Christian College, Moberly, Missouri, a Master of Arts in Human Relations Services and Counseling from Governor's State University, University Park, Illinois and a Doctorate in Ministry from McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago, Illinois. Earl served as pastor of the Farber Christian Church in Farber, Missouri and was the founding pastor of the Deer Creek Christian Church, University Park, Illinois where he served for over thirty-seven years. Since then he has. mentored young pastors and taught a few graduate level classes. For the past 17 years he has served as teaching pastor under his sons David and Jonathan at the Carillon location of Community Christian Church in Naperville, Illinois. Book excerpt: The brain can be weighed, measured, scanned, dissected, and studied. The mind that we conceive to be generated by the brain, however, remains a mystery. It has no mass, no volume, and no shape, and it cannot be measured in space and time. Yet it is as real as neurons, neurotransmitters, and synaptic junctions. It is also very powerful. —from Brain Wars Is the brain "a computer made of meat," and human consciousness a simple product of electrical impulses? The idea that matter is all that exists has dominated science since the late nineteenth century and led to the long-standing scientific and popular understanding of the brain as simply a collection of neurons and neural activity. But for acclaimed neuroscientist Mario Beauregard, Ph.D., along with a rising number of colleagues and others, this materialist-based view clashes with what we feel and experience every day. In Brain Wars, Dr. Beauregard delivers a paradigm-shifting examination of the role of the brain and mind. Filled with engaging, surprising, and cutting-edge scientific accounts, this eye-opening book makes the increasingly indisputable case that our immaterial minds influence what happens in our brains, our bodies, and even beyond our bodies. Examining the hard science behind "unexplained" phenomena such as the placebo effect, self-healing, brain control, meditation, hypnosis, and near-death and mystical experiences, Dr. Beauregard reveals the mind's capabilities and explores new answers to age-old mind-body questions. Radically shifting our comprehension of the role of consciousness in the universe, Brain Wars forces us to consider the immense untapped power of the mind and explore the profound social, moral, and spiritual implications that this new understanding holds for our future.
