Book excerpt: The MiniBooNE experiment at Fermilab has amassed the largest sample to date of [pi]°s produced in neutral current (NC) neutrino-nucleus interactions at low energy. This paper reports a measurement of the momentum distribution of [pi]°s produced in mineral oil (CH2) and the first observation of coherent [pi]° production below 2 GeV. In the forward direction, the yield of events observed above the expectation for resonant production is attributed primarily to coherent production off carbon, but may also include a small contribution from diffractive production on hydrogen. Integrated over the MiniBooNE neutrino flux, the sum of the NC coherent and diffractive modes is found to be (19.5 ± 1.1 (stat) ± 2.5 (sys))% of all exclusive NC [pi]° production at MiniBooNE. These measurements are of immediate utility because they quantify an important background to MiniBooNE's search for [nu]{sub {mu}} → [nu]{sub e} oscillations.

Book excerpt: The production of single, highly forward [pi]0 mesons by NC coherent neutrino-nucleus interactions ([nu][mu] + N → [nu][mu] + N + [pi]0) is a process which probes fundamental aspects of the weak interaction. This reaction may also pose as a limiting background for long baseline searches for [nu][mu] → [nu]e oscillations if the neutrino mixing angle [theta]13 is very small. The high-statistics sample of neutrino interactions recorded by the MINOS Near Detector provides an opportunity to measure the cross section of this coherent reaction on a relatively large-A nucleus at an average Ev = 4.9 GeV. A major challenge for this measurement is the isolation of forward-going electromagnetic (EM) showers produced by the relatively rare coherent NC([pi]0) process amidst an abundant rate of incoherently produced EM showers. The backgrounds arise from single [pi]0 dominated NC events and also from quasi-elastic-like CC scattering of electron neutrinos. In this Thesis the theory of coherent interactions is summarized, and previous measurements of the coherent NC([pi]0) cross section are reviewed. Then, methods for selecting a sample of coherent NC([pi]0) like events, extracting the coherent NC([pi]0) event rate from that sample, estimating the analysis uncertainties, and calculating a cross section, are presented. A signal for neutrino-induced NC([pi]0) production is observed in the relevant kinematic regime as an excess of events of three standard deviations above background. The reaction cross sections, averaged over an energy window of 2.5 ≤ Ev ≤ 9.0 GeV is determined to be (31.6±10.5) x 10-40 cm2/nucleus. The result is the first evidence obtained for neutrino-nucleus coherent NC([pi]0) scattering on iron, and is the first measurement on an average nuclear target above A = 30. The cross section measurement is in agreement with NEUGEN3 implementation of the model by Rein and Sehgal which is motived by the PCAC hypothesis.

The neutral current reactions, .nu.n .-->. .nu.n.pi./sup 0/ and .nu.p .-->. .nu.p.pi./sup 0/, and the charged current reaction, .nu.n .-->. .mu./sup -/p.pi./sup 0/, were investigated. The neutrino detector was made up of optical spark chambers and liquid and solid scintillation counters. The .pi./sup 0/ is detected by observing showers from its decay into two gamma rays. Muons are distinguished from other particles by their long range without interaction. Time of flight measurement is used to discriminate against neutron background. The neutral and charged current events are discussed, and the ratio of neutral current events to charged current events is found to be 0.149 +- 0.048 after corrections. Nuclear charge exchange corrections to this result because the detector contains complex nuclei are also discussed. Kinematic distributions for the final state particles and the p.pi./sup 0/ mass distribution are given. (auth).

Book excerpt: This book is based on the author's work in the T2K long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment, in which neutrinos are generated by a proton beam and are detected by near and far neutrino detectors. In order to achieve the precise measurement of the neutrino oscillation, an accurate understanding of the neutrino beam and the neutrino interaction is essential. Thus, the author measured the neutrino beam properties and the neutrino interaction cross sections using a near neutrino detector called INGRID and promoted a better understanding of them. Then, the author performed a neutrino oscillation analysis using the neutrino beam and neutrino interaction models verified by the INGRID measurements. As a result, some values of the neutrino CP phase are disfavored at the 90% confidence level. If the measurement precision is further improved, we may be able to discover the finite CP phase which involves the CP violation. Thus, this result is an important step towards the discovery of CP violation in the lepton sector, which may be the key to understanding the origin of the matter–antimatter asymmetry in the universe.
