Book excerpt: Les simulateurs de conduite immergent leurs conducteurs dans une représentation synthétique de la réalité, en produisant notamment des stimuli visuels et vestibulaires permettant la perception d’un mouvement propre. L’étude de la validité de la simulation dépend donc de la compréhension des détails des mécanismes fusion multisensorielle et de la disponibilité de modèles concernant l’amplitude du mouvement perçu, les écarts tolérés sur les stimuli restitués restant imperceptibles, ainsi que les seuils de détection d’incohérences entre les stimuli visuels et vestibulaires. L’étude psychophysique d’une illusion (effet Pavard & Berthoz) montre premièrement que la perception visuelle d’un mouvement de translation est influencée par une stimulation vestibulaire simultanée, contredisant la dominance généralement admise du flux optique dans la perception au profit du concept d’interdépendance entre la perception du mouvement propre et du mouvement visuel. La conséquence d’une différence d’amplitude entre ces deux dimensions dans un dispositif de réalité virtuelle immersive est ensuite évaluée en étudiant le maintien de l’équilibre, afin d’explorer la tolérance de la perception à ce type de conflit. La dernière étude expérimentale aborde également la question de la tolérance aux conflits d’amplitude entre des stimuli normalement interdépendants pendant la conduite d'un slalom, impliquant en effet un couplage physique entre les accélérations latérales et de lacet dans un véhicule réel. L’adéquation de ces résultats au formalisme de fusion optimale au sens statistique, prenant en compte l’incertitude et les imprécisions des signaux sensoriels, est enfin discutée.
