Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hierarchical Modeling of Energy Systems presents a detailed methodology for hierarchical modeling of large-scale complex systems with a focus on energy systems and their expansion planning and control. General methodological principles of hierarchical modeling are analyzed, and based on this analysis, a generalized technology for the hierarchical approach is presented. The mathematical foundations of decomposition and bi-level programming, as well as the possibility of using information technologies are also considered. The theoretical propositions are demonstrated by numerous hierarchical modeling examples aimed at planning the development of the energy sector and expansion of energy systems, analyzing, and optimizing these systems, and controlling their operation. In addition, codes and sample simulations are included throughout. This is an invaluable guide for researchers, engineers, and other specialists involved in the development, control and management of energy systems, while the summary of fundamental principles and concepts in energy modeling makes this an accessible learning tool for graduate students on any course involving energy systems or energy modeling. Summarizes hierarchical modeling principles and methods Critically evaluates all energy systems including electric power systems, heat supply systems, gas, and coal supply systems, integrated and cogeneration systems, its interrelations and more Examines expansion planning, development and operation, control and management of energy systems Provides a detailed mathematical descriptions of models, computation algorithms, and optimization problems

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes how a model for optimizing the energy supply system in Germany can be implemented. It focuses on the open energy modeling framework (Oemof) program for modeling energy supply systems. The individual elements of Oemof are described, as well as the model’s structure. The technical components of Oemof are subsequently demonstrated in mathematical calculations, along with sufficient Python code to begin basic modeling. The book will appeal to anyone with an interest in optimization models for energy supply systems, or in the mathematical description of the technical components of such systems in practical implementation, using a real example, Oemof. Thermodynamic descriptions of combustion are provided, so that readers can focus on modeling aspects. Researchers and practitioners will also find the book useful, as it expands on their knowledge of the technical components of energy supply systems, supported with detailed mathematical calculations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The articles presented in this Special Issue cover different aspects of the urban planning process, such as simulation, optimization or decision-making. The authors highlighted the importance of performing an integrated design of the district, considering different sectors, different energy vectors and different operation modes. In order to better integrate renewable and residual energy sources (R²ES), careful design of systems and storage solutions should be performed. Different storage solutions were tested, ranging from large-scale thermal energy storage to vehicle batteries or the thermal mass of buildings. Van der Heijde et al. (2019) proposed a two-layer design optimization algorithm to design a district heating network with solar thermal collectors, seasonal thermal energy storage and excess heat injection. Pajot et al. (2019) also performed an optimization of the sizing and control of energy systems in a district equipped with heat pumps, with thermal energy storage or thermal mass utilization. A hybrid distribution system, coupling the thermal and electrical networks, was proposed by Widl et al. (2019). Arnaudo et al. (2019) used the vehicle-to-grid (V2G) concept to decrease the overloading of the electrical distribution network during heat pump operation. Finally, Kazmi et al. (2019) proposed an integrated decision-making planning approach for a better integration of R²ES in the distribution network. The complexity of urban planning leads to the development of new tools and methodologies. Until now, operation was poorly integrated in the design phase. New urban building energy modeling tools were proposed by the different authors. These tools are either based on co-simulations or integrated solutions to be able to capture the fine dynamics of a district. The difficulty of generating the input data for the models was also discussed. Regarding the methodology, most articles proposed a two-stage optimization procedure to optimize both the operational and design aspects. Mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) and genetic algorithms were often used to find optimal solutions.

Book excerpt: This book presents a comprehensive, integrated treatment of cogeneration technologies and systems. Also called combined heat and power (CHP), cogeneration is the use of a power station to deliver two or more useful forms of energy (e.g. generating electricity and heat at the same time). All conventional, fuel-based plants generate heat as by-product, which is often wasted. Cogeneration captures part of this heat for delivery to consumers. The book gives a tour of the available cogeneration technologies and their features. It provides plenty of instructive examples of cogeneration projects to illustrate key concepts, and also covers the relevant regulatory and legal frameworks. It is an ideal text/reference for anyone working in power systems and energy engineering. Topics covered include: * Benefits of cogeneration * Cogeneration technologies * Electrical engineering aspects * Applications of cogeneration * Fuels for cogeneration systems * Thermodynamic analysis * Environmental impacts of cogeneration * Reliability and availability * Economic analysis of cogeneration systems * Regulatory and legal frameworks * Selection, integration and operation of cogeneration systems * Simulation and optimisation * Synthesis, design and operation * Examples of cogeneration projects * Research and development of cogeneration * Summary and conclusions
