Book excerpt: A comprehensive introduction to coastal storms and their associated impacts Coastal Storms offers students and professionals in the field a comprehensive overview and groundbreaking text that is specifically devoted to the analysis of coastal storms. Based on the most recent knowledge and contributions from leading researchers, the text examines coastal storms’ processes and characteristics, the main hazards (such as overwash, inundation and flooding, erosion, structures overtopping), and how to monitor and model storms. The authors include information on the most advanced innovations in forecasting, prediction, and early warning, which serves as a foundation for accurate risk evaluation and developing adequate coastal indicators and management options. In addition, structural overtopping and damage are explained, taking into account the involved hydrodynamic and morphodynamic processes. The monitoring methods of coastal storms are analyzed based on recent results from research projects in Europe and the United States. Methods for vulnerability and risk evaluation are detailed, storm impact indicators are suggested for different hazards and coastal management procedures analyzed. This important resource includes: Comprehensive coverage of storms and associated impacts, including meteorological coastal storm definitions and related potential consequences A state-of-the-art reference for advanced students, professionals and researchers in the field Chapters on monitoring methods of coastal storms, their prediction, early warning systems, and modeling of consequences Explorations of methods for vulnerability and risk evaluation and suggestions for storm impact indicators for different hazards and coastal management procedures Coastal Storms is a compilation of scientific and policy-related knowledge related to climate-related extreme events. The authors are internationally recognized experts and their work reflects the most recent science and policy advances in the field.

Book excerpt: In 1968, the 90th Congress authorized this national appraisal of shore erosion and shore protection. To satisfy the purposes of the authorizing legislation, a family of 12 related reports has been published. They are: Regional inventory reports; Shore protection guidelines; Shore management guidelines; and Report on the national shoreline study. This report presents an inventory of the physical characteristics, historical changes, and ownership and use of the coastal shorelines of Washington and Oregon, including major bays and estuaries.

Book excerpt: This edited book gives a general overview on current research, focusing on geoenvironmental issues and challenges in hydrogeosciences in model regions in Asia, Europe, and America, with a focus on the Middle East and Mediterranean region and surrounding areas. This proceedings book is based on the accepted papers for oral/poster presentations at the 2nd Springer Conference of the Arabian Journal of Geosciences (CAJG-2), Tunisia 2019. It offers a broad range of recent studies that discuss the latest advances in geoenvironmental and hydrogeosciences from diverse backgrounds including climate change, geoecology, biogeochemistry, water resources management, and environmental monitoring and assessment. It shares insights on how the understanding of ecological, climatological, oceanic and hydrological processes is the key for improving practices in environment management, including the eco-responsibility, scientific integrity, and social and ethical dimensions. It is of interest to scientists, engineers, practitioners, and policymakers in the field of environmental sciences including climatology, oceanography, ecology, biogeochemistry, environmental management, hydrology, hydrogeology, and geosciences in general. In particular, this book is of great value to students and environment-related professionals for further investigations on the state of Earth systems.

Book excerpt: Tide gauges show that global sea level has risen about 7 inches during the 20th century, and recent satellite data show that the rate of sea-level rise is accelerating. As Earth warms, sea levels are rising mainly because ocean water expands as it warms; and water from melting glaciers and ice sheets is flowing into the ocean. Sea-level rise poses enormous risks to the valuable infrastructure, development, and wetlands that line much of the 1,600 mile shoreline of California, Oregon, and Washington. As those states seek to incorporate projections of sea-level rise into coastal planning, they asked the National Research Council to make independent projections of sea-level rise along their coasts for the years 2030, 2050, and 2100, taking into account regional factors that affect sea level. Sea-Level Rise for the Coasts of California, Oregon, and Washington: Past, Present, and Future explains that sea level along the U.S. west coast is affected by a number of factors. These include: climate patterns such as the El Niño, effects from the melting of modern and ancient ice sheets, and geologic processes, such as plate tectonics. Regional projections for California, Oregon, and Washington show a sharp distinction at Cape Mendocino in northern California. South of that point, sea-level rise is expected to be very close to global projections. However, projections are lower north of Cape Mendocino because the land is being pushed upward as the ocean plate moves under the continental plate along the Cascadia Subduction Zone. However, an earthquake magnitude 8 or larger, which occurs in the region every few hundred to 1,000 years, would cause the land to drop and sea level to suddenly rise.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Patterns of beach erosion and accretion due to jetty construction are examined for the coast of Oregon. All jetty systems are included with the exception of those on the Columbia River, making a total of nine systems. All evidence indicates that these areas of the Oregon coast are experiencing a seasonal reversal in the sand drift, but with a zero or near zero net drift over a several years time span. Thus, shoreline changes resulting from jetty construction are not the usual examples of jetties blocking a net drift as found in southern California and elsewhere. In general, accretion of the shoreline took place adjacent to the jetties following their construction, both to the north and south. This accretion resulted mainly from the embayment formed between the jetty and the pre-jetty shoreline, the embayment becoming filled until the shoreline is straight and again in equilibrium with the waves such that there is a zero net sand drift. In some cases, as at the entrance to Yaquina Bay, the jetties are oblique to the trend of the shoreline and so produced a protected zone from the waves where accretion could occur. Sand for the accretion adjacent to the jetties was derived from beach erosion at greater distances from the jetties. The severity of the erosion depended on the total amount of sand required for the beach accretion to a new equilibrium, and the length of beach that was undergoing erosion. When only a short stretch of beach occurs to one side of the jetties, as at Bayocean Spit, then the resulting erosion was particularly severe, in that case leading to the breaching of the spit. A computer model is developed to simulate the shoreline changes that occurred following construction of the jetties on the Siuslaw River mouth. The model demonstrates deposition next to the jetty to fill the embayment created by the jetty, and erosion at greater distances from the jetty. The shoreline advances of the model agreed closely with the actual shoreline changes found in surveys following jetty construction.
