Book excerpt: CoOP (Coastal Ocean Processes) is an organization meant to study major interdisciplinary scientific problems in the coastal ocean. Its goal is to obtain a new level of quantitative understanding of the processes that dominate the transformations, transports and fates of biologically, chemically and geologically important matter on the continental margin. Central to obtaining this understanding will be advances in observing and modeling the cross-shelf component of transport. More specific objectives are to understand (1) cross- margin exchanges, (2) air sea exchanges, (3) benthic-pelagic exchanges, (4) terrestrial inputs and (5) biological and chemical transformations within the water column. CoOP research will be carried out primarily through a series of process-oriented field studies, each involving about two years of measurements. Each of these field studies is to be initiated and defined through a community workshop. In addition to the process studies, CoOP will also involve modeling, long time series, exploratory studies, remote sensing, technological innovation, data archiving and communications. A CoOP pilot study has been approved for funding by the National Science Foundation, and funding will begin in 1992. The CoOP science effort is thus already underway ... The main focus of this study is to investigate the location and the related processes of the transformation boundary from spinel to garnet peridotite facies at subsolidus conditions, because the presence of garnet in melting residues has significant influence to the conclusion drawn from geochemical/geophysical observations. Using an approach that monitors the rate of reaction progresses, the experimental results confirmed the presence of a region that garnet and spinel coexist in peridotite compositions. The trace element distribution among the product phases (opx and cpx) subsequent to the garnet breakdown reaction is in disequilibrium, due to the differences of diffusivity between major and trace elements. The presence of disequilibrium distribution in nature may be used to infer time scales of geodynamic processes. Diffusion coefficients of A1 in diopside are experimentally determined, and used for modeling the equilibration of major elements in pyroxene during MORB genesis. In summary, this dissertation contributes two major inferences: the location of the transformation boundaries of the gamet-spinel peridotite; the presence of disequilibrium trace elements distribution with equilibrium major elements distribution in mantle pyroxenes.

Book excerpt: "Data from the Coastal Ocean Processes Inner Shelf Study are analyzed to determine atmospheric forcing characteristics and the heat balance of the inner shelf, and are used as motivation for a numerical study of inner shelf circulation during upwelling and downwelling. Variation in meteorological forcing on the North Carolina Inner shelf is dominated by synoptic weather systems. The structure of cold fronts and the local meteorological conditions they produce, result in a correlation between the surface heat flux and wind orientation. During weakly-stratified conditions the surface heat flux dominated variation in heat content. During stratified conditions, cross-shelf heat fluxes due to Ekman dynamics dominate variation in heat content of the inner shelf. The dominance of wind-driven cross-shelf transport motivated numerical studies of upwelling and downwelling. The feedback between mixing and stratification played a role in determining the strength of the circulation on the inner shelf. During upwelling, denser water is brought onto the lower half of the inner shelf, producing vertical stratification and enhancing the inner shelf circulation. During downwelling, circulation was weakened by the presence of stratification. These circulation patterns are discussed in the context of coastal observations, and the implications for cross-shelf transport and exchange processes are considered."--Stinet
