Download or read book Mnemopoetics written by Valérie Bada and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2008 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From its very beginning, African American drama has borne witness to the creative power of the slaves to maintain their human dignity as well as to fashion a complex culture of survival. If the memory of slavery has always been at the heart of the African American theatrical tradition, it is the way in which it is processed and inscribed that has developed and is still changing. Through the close reading and socio-historical analysis of eight plays from 1939 to 1996, the author seeks to unravel the fluctuating patterns in the shaping of the theatrical memory of slavery long after its abolition. To do so, she defines the concept and practice of mnemopoetics as the making of memory through imagination as well as the critical approaches that decipher and interpret cultural productions of memory. As a constellation of processes akin to the fluidity of memory, mnemopoetics blends creative representation and critical exploration to suggest that the cultural creation of memory necessarily entails a self-reflexive involvement with its own interpretation. If slavery embodies the deep, foundational memory of America, African American drama represents the open, communal space where it becomes possible to convert the irretrievable nature of a vicarious past into the redeeming function of a collective memory.

Book Synopsis Antiquity Now by : Thomas E. Jenkins
Download or read book Antiquity Now written by Thomas E. Jenkins and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-05-14 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written in a lively and accessible style, Antiquity Now opens our gaze to the myriad uses and abuses of classical antiquity in contemporary fiction, film, comics, drama, television - and even internet forums. With every chapter focusing on a different aspect of classical reception - including sexuality, politics, gender and ethnicity - this book explores the ideological motivations behind contemporary American allusions to the classical world. Ultimately, this kaleidoscope of receptions - from calls for marriage equality to examinations of gang violence to passionate pleas for peace (or war) - reveals a 'classical antiquity' that reconfigures itself daily, as modernity explains itself to itself through ever-expanding technologies and media. Antiquity Now thus examines the often-surprising redeployment of the art and literature of the ancient world, a geography charged with especial value in the contemporary imagination.
Book Synopsis Deleuze/Guattari & Ecology by : Bernd Herzogenrath
Download or read book Deleuze/Guattari & Ecology written by Bernd Herzogenrath and published by Palgrave MacMillan. This book was released on 2009 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "What does "ecology" mean if this concept cannot be grounded anymore in an essentialist and clear-cut separation of nature and culture, nature and man, human and non-human, as Deleuze and Guattari - in both their individual and collective works - suggest? "[M]an and nature are not like two opposite terms confronting each other - not even in the sense of bipolar opposites within a relationship of causation, ideation, or expression (cause and effect, subject and object, etc); rather they are one and the same essential reality, the producer-product" (Anti-Oedipus 4-5)." "Deleuze/Guattari's "generalized ecology" turns Ecology into a complex transdisciplinary project linking philosophy, art, sociology, literature, politics, music, history, the hard and soft sciences. Deleuze/Guattari offer a perspective on ecology as a comprehensive natural ontology of complex material systems, without falling into the trap of the Cartesian dualism of "nature" and "culture" that is still operative in much of the mainstream of ecological/ecocritical approaches."--BOOK JACKET.
