The Coastal Engineering Manual (CEM) assembles in a single source the current state-of-the-art in coastal engineering to provide appropriate guidance for application of techniques and methods to the solution of most coastal engineering problems. The CEM provides a standard for the formulation, design, and expected performance of a broad variety of coastal projects. These projects are undertaken to provide or improve navigation at commercial harbors, harbor works for commercial fish handling and service facilities, and recreational boating facilities. As an adjunct to navigation improvements, shore protection projects are often required to mitigate the impacts of navigation projects. Beach erosion control and hurricane or coastal storm protection projects provide wave damage reduction and flood protection to valuable coastal commercial, urban, and tourist communities. Environmental restoration projects provide a rational layout and proven approach to restoring the coastal and tidal environs where such action may be justified, or required as mitigation to a coastal project's impacts, or as mitigation for the impact of some previous coastal activity, incident, or neglect. As the much expanded replacement document for the Shore Protection Manual (1984) and several other U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) manuals, the CEM provides a much broader field of guidance. Part II "Coastal Hydrodynamics" is organized to lead the reader from the fundamental principles of linear and other wave theories, including irregular waves and spectral analysis, to ocean wave generation and through the process of transformation as the wave approaches and reacts with the coastline. Analysis of water level variations including astronomical tides and storm surges are presented along with the hydrodynamics of coastal inlets and harbors are included in other chapters.

Book excerpt: Hydraulic research is developing beyond traditional civil engineering, since the number of natural hazards increased in recent years, and so did the extent and scope of structural safety assessment and environmental research. Hydraulic Engineering II contains 44 technical papers from the 2nd SREE Conference on Hydraulic Engineering (CHE 2013, Hong Kong, 2-3 November 2013, including the Third SREE Workshop on Environment and Safety Engineering, WESE 2013), discusses recent advances and issues, and identifies challenges associated with engineering applications in hydraulic engineering. The contributions showcase recent developments in the areas of hydraulic engineering and environmental engineering, and other related fields. The sections on hydraulic engineering mainly focus on river engineering and sediment transport, flood hazards and innovative control measures, rainfall modelling, dam safety, slope stability, environmental hydraulics and hydrology, while the contributions related to environmental issues focus on environmental prediction and control techniques in environmental geoscience, environmental ecology, water pollution and ecosystem degradation, applied meteorology, coastal engineering, safety engineering and environmental pollution control. Hydraulic Engineering II will be invaluable to academics and professionals in both hydraulic and environmental engineering.

Book excerpt: Effective coastal engineering is expensive, but it is not as costly as neglect or ineffective intervention. Good practice needs to be based on sound principles, but theoretical work and modelling also need to be well grounded in practice, which is continuously evolving. Conceptual and detailed design has been advanced by new industry publications since the publication of the second edition. This third edition provides a number of updates: the sections on wave overtopping have been updated to reflect changes brought in with the recently issued EurOtop II manual; a detailed worked example is given of the calculation of extreme wave conditions for design; additional examples have been included on the reliability of structures and probabilistic design; the method for tidal analysis and calculation of amplitudes and phases of harmonic constituents from water level time series has been introduced in a new appendix together with a worked example of harmonic analysis; and a real-life example is included of a design adapting to climate change. This book is especially useful as an information source for undergraduates and engineering MSc students specializing in coastal engineering and management. Readers require a good grounding in basic fluid mechanics or engineering hydraulics, and some familiarity with elementary statistical concepts.

Physical models help us to understand the complex hydrodynamic processes occurring in the nearshore zone and they provide reliable and economic engineering design solutions. This book is about the art and science of physical modeling as applied in coastal engineering. The aim of the book is to consolidate and synthesize into a single text much of the knowledge about physical modeling that has been developed worldwide. This book was written to serve as a graduate-level text for a course in physical modeling or as a reference text for engineers and researchers engaged in physical modeling and laboratory experimentation. The first three chapters serve as an introduction to similitude and physical models, covering topics such as advantages and disadvantages of physical models, systems of units, dimensional analysis, types of similitude and various hydraulic similitude criteria applicable to coastal engineering models.Practical application of similitude principles to coastal engineering studies is covered in Chapter 4 (Hydrodynamic Models), Chapter 5 (Coastal Structure Models) and Chapter 6 (Sediment Transport Models). These chapters develop the appropriate similitude criteria, discuss inherent laboratory and scale effects and overview the technical literature pertaining to these types of models. The final two chapters focus on the related subjects of laboratory wave generation (Chapter 7) and measurement and analysis techniques (Chapter 8).

Book excerpt: The goals of wind wave research are relatively well defined: to be able to predict the wind wave field and its effect on the environment. That environment could be natural (beaches, the atmosphere etc.) or imposed by human endeavour (ports, harbours, coastal settlements etc.). Although the goals are similar, the specific requirements of these various fields differ considerably. This book attempts to summarise the current state of this knowledge and to place this understanding into a common frame work. It attempts to take a balanced approach between the pragmatic engineering view of requiring a short term result and the scientific quest for detailed understanding. Thus, it attempts to provide a rigorous description of the physical processes involved as well as practical predictive tools.

Book excerpt: This book is intended as an introduction to classical water wave theory for the college senior or first year graduate student. The material is self-contained; almost all mathematical and engineering concepts are presented or derived in the text, thus making the book accessible to practicing engineers as well. The book commences with a review of fluid mechanics and basic vector concepts. The formulation and solution of the governing boundary value problem for small amplitude waves are developed and the kinematic and pressure fields for short and long waves are explored. The transformation of waves due to variations in depth and their interactions with structures are derived. Wavemaker theories and the statistics of ocean waves are reviewed. The application of the water particle motions and pressure fields are applied to the calculation of wave forces on small and large objects. Extension of the linear theory results to several nonlinear wave properties is presented. Each chapter concludes with a set of homework problems exercising and sometimes extending the material presented in the chapter. An appendix provides a description of nine experiments which can be performed, with little additional equipment, in most wave tank facilities.

Book excerpt: Comprehensive Civil Engineering Coverage You Can Trust The Civil Engineering Reference Manual is the most comprehensive textbook for the NCEES Civil PE exam. This book's time-tested organization and clear explanations start with the basics to help you quickly get up to speed with common civil engineering concepts. Together, the 90 chapters provide an in-depth review of all of the topics, codes, and standards listed in the NCEES Civil PE exam specifications. The extensive index contains thousands of entries, with multiple entries included for each topic, so you'll find what you're looking for no matter how you search. Due to the changes in codes for the 2015 NCEES PE exam, there are some updates to this edition. Though not all of PPI's products reflect the adopted editions of the new design standards, in most cases the principles change very little. While specific procedures, equations, or values may change gradually from one edition of a design or reference standard to the next, PPI's books continue to provide an appropriate overview of the design concepts presented, and will prepare you for the upcoming exams. This book features: over 100 appendices containing essential support material over 500 clarifying examples over 550 common civil engineering terms defined in an easy-to-use glossary thousands of equations, figures, and tables industry-standard terminology and nomenclature equal support of U.S. customary and SI units After you pass your exam, the Civil Engineering Reference Manual will continue to serve as an invaluable reference throughout your civil engineering career.
