In order to be able to continue paying these high wage costs, coal operators must have relief from the present unbelievable abuse of the so-called willing and able buncombe; they must have a chance to give coal consumers some semblance of dependable coal supply. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mining Costs of the World: A Compilation of Cost and Other Important Data on the World's Principal Mines The writers have long believed that there is need for a book of this char acter, embodying in condensed form costs and other important operating data on the metal mines of the world. This book, which covers about three hundred and twenty-five metal mines, is not a text but a compilation of results actually Obtained at the various properties shown therein. It should be of material assistance to the engineer, manager, superintendent, operator and student. We realize that nearly every mining man has his own notebook, but rarely are these data complete and conveniently arranged in pocket book form. The examining engineer and Operator frequently find it difficult to Obtain reliable data in camps they are visiting. This book gives the desired information, embody ing as it does most of the principal camps of the world: It is evident that no just comparison can be drawn between any two mines, as no two are Operated under identical conditions. In a great major ity of cases we have given Operating results for several years. There is a constant aim to increase production with decreasing costs, but as this is not a rapid nor radical movement figures from year to year undergo very slight changes. It is our intention, however, from time to time to augment the book, adding new mines to the list, later data and more complete information. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles and Practice of Coal Mining In preparing this volume the author has had in mind the needs of two classes of students. First, those who intend to adopt mining engineering as a profession; and, secondly, practical miners seeking to secure certificates as Colliery Managers or Under Managers, or preparing for the examination of the Board of Education. The science of mining so largely consists of practical applications of geology, mechanics, physics, chemistry, and other branches of natural knowledge, that it has proved difficult in many cases to decide what acquaintance with these subjects on the part of the reader to take for granted. The author is hopeful that sufficient information has been given to make the book self-explanatory, but students are urged to study these collateral sciences as fully as circumstances permit. The necessity for having an adequate cost accounting system has been stressed within the past few years by trade associations, government agencies and accountants generally. In the coal industry this was a particularly important subject during the recent war, sales prices being fixed by the Fuel Ad ministration based ou cost. At all times a knowledge of the cost of production is an absolute prerequisite to price making. A corporation without a cost system is like a ship without a com pass. Business is conducted for the purpose of making a profit, and the business man is entitled to a margin between his cost and selling price. An adequate cost finding system is intended to' eliminate guess work. To be of value to the industry such a cost system should be more than a historical record of trans actions long closed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cost of Mining: An Exhibit of the Results of Important Mines Throughout the World Some six years ago a discussion started by Messrs T. A. Rick ard and W. R. Ingalls of the Engineering and Mining Journal on the Cost of Mining attracted considerable discussion from min ing engineers throughout the world, and I contributed some articles. It was natural to continue the investigation of the subject. In 1908, at the suggestion of Mr. Ingalls, I undertook to prepare some more extended articles for the same journal with a view of rationalizing the subject to show how the natural factors inevitably impose certain costs that sound engineering must recognize, and that to attempt economies unjustified by the conditions is the rankest extravagance. This book is the outgrowth of those articles and to a lesser extent of some lectures given at Harvard University and a large amount of discussion and correspondence. The subject is one that is inherently interesting to mining men and mining engineers and it seems possible that it may interest a somewhat wider field. Those who are interested in financial and economic developments can hardly escape some contact with the mining business. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Surface Subsidence in Illinois Resulting From Coal Mining It is undoubtedly to the interest of the State to conserve the coal supply by securing as complete extraction as possible from the areas in which mining is now being carried on. Almost one - half of the coal is being left in the ground and made unavailable for future mining, and in some places a large part of this abandoned coal is left because the mine operators fear that by removing a larger per centage they may cause surface subsidence and be required to pay damages out of proportion to the real value of the surface. In many places the surface may be restored at little expense. But until the prevailing conditions are known accurately and the essential facts are understood and studied, the State cannot consider or propose meas ures to relieve the mining industry of this severe burden. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the Coal Mining Institute of America, Pittsburgh, Pa, 1907 Again: Has the loss in mining been taken into considera tion? If not, this would materially reduce the period estimated as being the life of the coal fields. There is much uncertainty as to what per cent. Of loss in mining is, and I fear it is going to be much greater than suspected. We often hear the statement made that 95 per cent. Of the coal area now under operation is being recovered. I think this statement is probably far re moved from the truth. I will grant that at some Operations 95 per cent. Of the coal is, perhaps, being recovered, but there cer tainly are cases, even now, where 75 per cent. Is not being gotten. The various estimates referred to are certainly of great interest and value, and should be reminders that the coal seams of this State, and of all the coal bearing States, should be most care fully mined, and that no losses should be allowed that can pos sibly be avoided in mining the coal and removing it from the position it has occupied since its formation. I think some papers on these lines would not be amiss and would suggest that some one volunteer to take up this work for presentation at our winter meeting.
