Book excerpt: Approximately 60 million youth participate in sports each year, however about 70% of these youth athletes drop out of sport by age 13 despite the numerous positive benefits of sport participation (National Alliance for Youth Sports, 2016; National Council for Youth Sports, 2008). Self-determination theory is a framework that has been utilized to investigate athletes’ motivations for behaviors including sport persistence and suggests that the coach can be an influence on such motivations (Rocchi, Pelletier, & Desmarais, 2017; Ryan & Deci, 2000). Coach-athlete relationship quality and interpersonal coaching behaviors that emphasize the satisfaction of basic needs have been found to be positively associated (Felton & Jowett, 2013; Jowett, et al., 2017; Riley & Smith, 2011). Further, interpersonal coaching behaviors that satisfy athletes’ basic psychological needs have been shown to impact sport persistence (Curran, Hill, Hall, & Jowett, 2014; Curran, Hill, Ntoumanis, Hall, & Jowett, 2016). A positive coach-athlete relationship has also been found to be related to higher levels of sport persistence (Gardner, Magee, & Vella, 2016; Rottensteiner, Konttinen, & Laakso, 2015). The purpose of the current study was to determine if the quality of the coach-athlete relationship mediates the relationship between interpersonal coaching behaviors and intentions to continue sport participation. A sample of 125 youth athletes ages 11 to 16 were recruited from organized sports teams in Nebraska and southeast Georgia. No significant mediations could be established. Significant positive relationships were shown among supportive coach interpersonal behaviors and coach-athlete relationship quality while negative relationships were demonstrated among thwarting coach interpersonal behaviors and coach-athlete relationship quality. A significant linear regression was found that predicted intentions based on competence-supportive coaching behaviors ((F(1,123) = 5.373, p = .022, adjusted R2 = .034). The results supported that coaches’ behaviors can impact coach-athlete relationship quality and intentions to continue sport participation in youth athletes.

Book excerpt: Participation in sport has well-documented physical, psychological and social benefits that can lead to positive youth development (c.f., Eime, Young, Harvey, Charity, & Payne, 2013; Hebert, Møller, Andersen, & Wedderkopp, 2015; Vandell, Larson, Mahoney, & Watts, 2015) as well as youths' thriving (Zarrett & Lerner, 2008). However, evidence continues to demonstrate that the number of sport participants in Canada and Japan continues to decline (Canadian Heritage, 2013, Statistics Canada, 2019; Nippon Junior High School Physical Culture Association, 2017). Such trends indicate the importance of understanding the psychological factors and the mechanisms of the relationships which may be important in determining how to keep young people in sport and optimally functioning. As thriving has been a popular topic in psychology research for two decades (Seligman & Csikszentmihalyi, 2000), recent evidence suggests that the concept of thriving is a positive predictor of desired outcomes such as retention, well-being, and performance (e.g., Porath, Spreitzer, Gibson, & Garnett, 2012; Ren, Yunlu, Shaffer, & Fodchuk, 2015). Self-Determination Theory (Ryan & Deci, 2000, 2017), a well-cited tenet explaining human motivation and function, has concomitantly been utilized to explain the relationship between motivational factors and thriving (Ryan & Deci, 2017; Spreitzer & Porath, 2014). Since motivation is a key element for sport continuation and positive functioning (Roberts, 2012), the current dissertation focused on the investigation of the psychological mechanism underlying youth athletes' thriving by examining self-determination theory. The overall purpose of this dissertation was to examine the psychological mechanism underlying thriving within a youth sport context. To do so, the current dissertation involved three different studies. Study 1 investigated the mechanism underlying youth athletes' thriving with specific consideration regarding personal predictable factors and the consequences. Study 2 tested the buffering effect of mental toughness on the negative indirect relationships between basic psychological need thwarting and important outcomes for youth athletes' positive functioning (intention to continue, subjective well-being in sport, and goal progress) through thriving. Study 3 examined how personal and social factors are related to thriving, in turn associating with important outcome variables of interest. In Study 1, the results revealed that basic psychological need satisfaction are positively associated with intention to continue in sport, subjective well-being in sport, and goal progress through thriving. Furthermore, both hedonic and eudaimonic motives were indirectly related to thriving through basic psychological need satisfaction. Lastly, hedonic and eudaimonic motives were positively related to intention to continue in sport, subjective well-being in sport, and goal progress through basic psychological need satisfaction and thriving. The findings from study 1 contribute to nurturing the body of literature in the self-determination theory by presenting a comprehensive model to enhance the understanding of the underlying mechanisms of thriving within the youth sport context. In addition, hedonic and eudaimonic motives have been rarely applied to the sport context and the youth participants in particular. As motives are more broadly defined than the reasons for behaviors (Cambridge University, 2001), the present study indicated that youth athletes' motivational orientations (e.g., hedonic seeking or eudaimonic seeking for their sport participation) would have important meanings in their sport participation to increase the experience and thriving and positive functioning. In Study 2, the results demonstrated significant moderating effects of mental toughness on the indirect associations between basic psychological need thwarting and the outcomes through thriving. In other words, the negative impacts of basic psychological need thwarting on important outcomes were weakest for those participants who showed high mental toughness and strongest for the individuals with low mental toughness. The results demonstrated novel findings in that the mediating role of thriving between a motivational factor and outcome variables were moderated by the degree of mental toughness. Lastly, in Study 3, the results demonstrated that the social factors (i.e., autonomy supportiveness of both coaches and parents) were positively related to thriving and intrinsic regulation three months later through increased basic psychological need satisfaction. Additionally, hedonic motives did not predict thriving while eudaimonic motives indirectly predicted thriving and intrinsic regulation through basic psychological need satisfaction. Eudaimonic motives, but not hedonic motives, positively predicted intrinsic motivation three months later through basic psychological need satisfaction. Although previous research demonstrated significant relationships with high degrees of self-determined motivation regulation (e.g., intrinsic regulation) and both hedonic and eudaimonic experience (i.e., Waterman et al., 2008), our research demonstrated only eudaimonic motives were positively related to intrinsic regulation. Furthermore, the study found that hedonic motives did not indirectly predict thriving through basic psychological need satisfaction while eudaimonic motives predicted thriving through basic psychological need satisfaction. Since both social factors were significantly associated with intrinsic regulation and thriving through basic psychological need satisfaction, hedonic motives were not an important predictor of the enhancement in youth athletes' intrinsic regulation and thriving when comparing with another personal factor (eudaimonic motives) and the social factors (i.e., autonomy supportiveness of coaches and parents). Overall, this thesis provides a greater theoretical understanding of the comprehensive mechanism underlying thriving within a youth sport context by using a theory of motivation. As the dissertation examined both personal and social factors affecting youth thriving, the results provide insight into the ways in which youth can thrive and thus, implications are also drawn for important stakeholders in sport.

Youth sport coaches have been shown to influence the satisfaction or thwarting of athletes' basic psychological needs, and ultimately, motivation in sport. However, measurement of the coach's influence on basic need satisfaction and thwarting in sport has been largely inconsistent, as there is not a standard instrument that has been widely adopted. The Interpersonal Behaviors Questionnaire in Sport is an instrument that examines athlete perceptions of coach interpersonal behaviors that support or thwart basic psychological needs. This instrument addresses some of the previous measurement-related gaps by measuring all three basic needs simultaneously and attributing athlete basic need satisfaction and thwarting directly to the coach's influence. While different sources of validity evidence (e.g., internal structure, relations to other variables) for responses to the IBQ have been provided for adults, only validity evidence for relations to other variables (e.g., coach-athlete relationship quality, intentions to continue sport participation) has been provided with youth. Moreover, potential problems with internal structure for youths' responses to the IBQ have recently been noted in the literature. To contribute to the growing body of literature examining the coach's influence on basic need satisfaction and motivation in youth sport, a measurement tool designed for youth sport participants is necessary. Thus, the current project aims to establish an instrument to measure youth athletes' perceptions of coach behaviors (i.e., youth version of the IBQ) that support or thwart basic psychological needs.This project consists of three integrated studies contributing toward the establishment of a℗ youth version of the IBQ. The purpose of Study 1 is to provide initial validity evidence for modification of the IBQ in Sport for youth by empirically examining the internal structure for youth athletes' responses to the IBQ. Study 2 aims to identify and then modify problematic IBQ items to create the Youth Interpersonal Behaviors Questionnaire in Sport (Y-IBQ). The purpose of Study 3 is to examine the psychometric properties of the newly developed Y-IBQ in a youth athlete population. The completion of these study aims will provide initial validity evidence for the Y-IBQ instrument in a youth athlete population and thereby improve measurement of the coach's influence on athlete basic need satisfaction in sport.

This research was guided by three research questions: (a) what properties are associated with and define contribution? (b) what does contribution mean to youth sport stakeholders? and (c) how do youth athletes develop contribution through involvement in the context of sport? These questions, and the overall objectives of this dissertation, were addressed through three studies. The purposes of the first study were to identify the properties that underlie contribution and to establish a theoretical definition of the construct. Using a scoping review methodology (Levac et al., 2010), six properties of contribution were identified from definitions and descriptions extracted from 75 manuscripts. These properties were combined to create a theoretical definition of contribution. A panel of 20 expert judges rated the properties and definition as fitting well to very well (5.05 to 5.70 on a 6-pt scale) with their conceptualizations of contribution. The purposes of the second study were to examine coaches' perspectives on contribution through sport and obtain their feedback on the theoretical definition of contribution. Data were collected via focus groups with 13 coaches from a variety of individual and team sports (M age = 33.0 years, SD = 11.1). Focus group transcripts were analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2019). Findings were presented as two categories. In the first category, youth sport coaches' perceptions of contribution, the coaches discussed contribution as an athlete by providing sport specific examples of contribution behaviour and their perceptions that contribution involved having a positive impact and acting with intent. Regarding the second category, coaches' feedback on the definition, coaches expressed that the definition fit with their conceptualizations of contribution, although the coaches felt the definition was complex and questioned whether the definition should have focused on intent versus behaviour. A practical definition of contribution was suggested to address the coaches' criticisms of the theoretical definition. The purpose of the third study was to create a grounded theory of the development of contribution through sport. Struassian grounded theory (Corbin & Strauss, 2015) was adopted as a research methodology and 20 participants including athletes, coaches, parents, and youth sport administrators, were interviewed individually. The development of contribution through sport was found to be a three-stage process. The first stage was characterized by the centrality of personal development, whereby the foundation for contribution was laid through instilling core values and developing relationships. In the second stage, youth engaged in their initial contribution experiences typically through invitations from adults. These invitations, and initial contribution experiences, helped build competence and confidence and if these initial contribution experiences were perceived as successful youth athletes were likely to continue to engage in contribution activities. The third stage was characterized by the display of regular or sustained contribution by athletes and a shifted focus from development of the individual to providing a benefit to others. Throughout all three stages of the process, coaches and parents stood out as influential individuals; however, the relative influence of the two groups changed as youth got older, became more independent, and drove their own contribution. Collectively, these studies clarify the construct of contribution and illuminate how it may be developed through sport.

He has published widely and presented extensively around the world on youth sport, including working on international projects and for NBGs/Federations and National Governmental organisations. He has gained European and SCUK funding for youth and coaching related projects as well as being involved in international consultancy. He is a co-editor of the European Journal for Sport and Society as well as the current Editor in Chief of the International Journal of Golf Science. Ruth Jeanes, PhD is an associate professor in the Faculty of Education at Monash University, Australia. Ruth’s research examines inclusion and exclusion within youth sport, particularly examining how sport can be used to achieve broader social policy objectives targeted at young people. Within this, she is particularly interested in the role of coaches in facilitating broader social outcomes for young people. Ruth has published extensively in these areas with over 100 publications across journal articles, book chapters and books. She is widely cited and has been successful in securing extensive funding for her research including two highly competitive Australian Research Council grants.
