Book excerpt: A new U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) initiative is accelerating the introduction of affordable, scalable, and sustainable biofuels and high-efficiency, low-emission vehicle engines. The simultaneous fuels and vehicles research and development (R&D) is designed to deliver maximum energy savings, emissions reduction, and on-road vehicle performance. The initiative's integrated approach combines the previously independent areas of biofuels and combustion R&D, bringing together two DOE Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy research offices, nine national laboratories, and numerous industry and academic partners to more rapidly identify commercially viable solutions. This multi-year project will provide industry with the scientific underpinnings required to move new biofuels and advanced engine systems to market faster while identifying and addressing barriers to their commercialization. This project's ambitious, first-of-its-kind approach simultaneously tackles fuel and engine innovation to co-optimize performance of both elements and provide dramatic and rapid cuts in fuel use and emissions.

Book excerpt: While vehicles are becoming more efficient, the properties of conventional fuels continue to limit the performance of internal combustion engines in most cars and trucks currently on U.S. roads. The Department of Energy (DOE) Co-Optimization of Fuels & Engines (Co-Optima) initiative is bringing together top scientists, engineers, and analysts from nine national laboratories with more than 20 university and industry partners across the country to investigate fuels and engines as dynamic design variables that can work together to boost efficiency and performance, while minimizing emissions. Applications include the entire on-road fleet, from light-duty (LD) passenger cars to heavy-duty (HD) freight trucks. The objective scientific outcomes of this initiative will provide American industry and policymakers with the knowledge, data, and tools needed to decide which changes could prove most viable and beneficial for drivers, businesses, and the environment. Potential benefits include dramatic improvements in vehicle fuel economy and increases in the use of domestically sourced fuel for transportation, in turn creating new U.S. jobs and keeping energy dollars in the United States, while reducing emissions and costs for consumers and commercial operators at the pump.

Book excerpt: Researchers from national laboratories and universities across the United States are putting their combined scientific might behind the Co-Optima initiative to bring better fuels and better vehicles to market sooner. Our team members are exploring synergies across a range of fuel, engine, and powertrain options, with a focus on opportunities to increase fuel diversification and provide greater flexibility for refiners and fuel producers. We have adopted a composition-agnostic approach to identify new blendstocks that can be combined with conventional petroleum-based fuels to deliver significantly improved performance in advanced internal combustion engines. In fiscal year 2017 (FY17), our research expanded to encompass solutions for the entire on-road fleet, from light-duty passenger cars to heavy-duty freight trucks. This report spotlights some of FY17's most significant Co-Optima accomplishments.

Book excerpt: The development of advanced engines has significant potential advantages in reduced aftertreatment costs for air pollutant emission control, and just as importantly for efficiency improvements and associated greenhouse gas emission reductions. There are significant opportunities to leverage fuel properties to create more optimal engine designs for both advanced spark-ignition and compression-ignition combustion strategies. The fact that biofuel blendstocks offer a potentially low-carbon approach to fuel production, leads to the idea of optimizing the entire fuel production-utilization value chain as a system from the standpoint of life cycle greenhouse gas emissions. This is a difficult challenge that has yet to be realized. This presentation will discuss the relationship between chemical structure and critical fuel properties for more efficient combustion, survey the properties of a range of biofuels that may be produced in the future, and describe the ongoing challenges of fuel-engine co-optimization.

Book excerpt: This presentation reports recent progress on light-duty boosted spark-ignition fuels/engines being developed under the Co-Optimization of Fuels and Engines initiative (Co-Optima). Co-Optima is focused on identifying fuel properties that optimize engine performance, independent of composition, allowing the market to define the best means to blend and provide these fuels. However, in support of this, we are pursuing a systematic study of blendstocks to identify a broad range of feasible options, with the objective of identifying blendstocks that can provide target ranges of key fuel properties, identifying trade-offs on consistent and comprehensive basis, and sharing information with stakeholders.

This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early in fiscal year 2016 (FY16), a fuel efficiency 'merit function' was developed to provide a simple tool to evaluate the potential thermal efficiency benefits of various fuels when multiple fuel properties or performance metrics are changing simultaneously. It has also proven to be useful for evaluating various fuel candidates and provides a useful framework for capturing and summarizing results from multiple projects within the Co-Optima Fuel Properties and Advanced Engine Development research portfolios. The objective of this report is to collect pertinent research results from FY16 and the first half of FY17, and to integrate them into an improved merit function.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Living sustainably is not just about preserving the wilderness or keeping nature pristine. The transition to a green economy depends on cities. For the first time in human history, the majority of the people on the planet live in urban areas. If we are to avert climate catastrophe, we will need our cities to coexist with nature without destroying it. Many places are already investing in the infrastructure of the future—including renewable energy, energy efficiency, mass and personal transit, and advanced sewage and waste management—but the modern city still has a long way to go. In The Sustainable City, Steven Cohen provides a broad and engaging overview of the urban systems of the twenty-first century, surveying policies and projects already under way in cities around the world and pointing to more ways progress can be made. Cohen discusses the sustainable city from an organizational-management and public-policy perspective that emphasizes the local level, looking at case studies of existing legislation, programs, and public-private partnerships that strive to align modern urban life and sustainability. From waste management in Beijing to energy infrastructure in Africa to public space in Washington, D.C., there are concrete examples of what we can do right now. Cohen synthesizes the disparate strands of sustainable city planning in an approachable and applicable guide that highlights how these issues touch our lives on a daily basis, whether the transportation we take, where our energy comes from, or what becomes of our food waste. Providing recommendations and insights with immediacy and relevance, this book has invaluable lessons for anyone seeking to link public policy to promoting a sustainable lifestyle.
