Book excerpt: This book provides comprehensive knowledge, aimed at practicing integrated circuit design engineer or researcher, to learn and design a low noise amplifier (LNA) for single and multiband applications. The content is structured in a way so that even a beginner can follow the design method easily. This book features the following characteristics: different types of LNA designs (with key building blocks) are discussed, and detailed analysis is given for each LNA design, which covers from the fundamental and principal knowledge to the justification of the design approach. Detailed design approaches are using 180 nm and 130nm CMOS technologies, purposely presented in this manner to give exposure to the design of LNA under different technologies. The LNAs in this book are designed for GSM, WCDMA and WLAN standards, but the same method can be used for other frequencies of operation. Comprehensive analyses on the extreme or corner condition effects are highlighted. Besides, detailed derivation of equations relating to the parameters of the LNA’s performance metrics help LNA designers in understanding how the performance metrics of the LNA can be optimized to meet the desired specification. Electromagnetic analyses using Sonnet, an electromagnetic tool able to replace the conventional post-layout simulation with resistance and capacitance parasitic extraction for more accurate frequency performance prediction are presented. The electromagnetic method is proposed to be used in the LNA design as it can accurately predict the LNA’s performance before tape-out for first-pass fabrication. MATLAB codes are provided to generate important S-parameters and noise figure values.

Book excerpt: In recent years, tremendous growth of the wireless market can be defined through the following words: smartphone and high-data rate wireless communication. This situation gives new challenges to RF power amplifier design, which includes high-efficiency, multi-band operation, and robustness to antenna mismatch conditions. In addition to these issues, the industry and consumers demand a low-cost small-sized wireless device. A fully integrated single-chip CMOS transceiver is the best solution in terms of cost and level of integration with other functional blocks. Therefore, the effective approaches in a CMOS process for the abovementioned hurdles are highly desirable. In this dissertation, the new challenges are overcome by introducing adaptability to a CMOS power amplifier. Meaningful achievements are summarized as follows. First, a new CMOS switched capacitor structure for high power applications is proposed. Second, a dual-mode CMOS PA with an integrated tunable matching network is proposed to extend battery lifetime. Third, a switchless dual-band matching structure is proposed, and the effectiveness of dual-band matching is demonstrated with a fully-integrated CMOS PA. Lastly, a reconfigurable CMOS PA with an automatic antenna mismatch recovery system is presented, which can maintain its original designed performance even under various antenna mismatch conditions. Conclusively, the research in this dissertation provides various solutions for new challenges of advanced mobile terminals.

Book excerpt: State-of-the-art RF front-end circuits are typically designed to operate at a single frequency. With an increasing number of available wireless standards, personal mobile communication devices require an increasing number of individually designed RF circuits. To save space and cost, one alternative possibility is to reuse much of the circuitry by utilizing electronically reconfigurable topologies. The ubiquitous low-noise amplifier is one of the many circuits that can be redesigned with the reconfigurable aspect in mind. In this thesis, previous work in reconfigurable LNAs is reviewed as well as a brief comparison of CMOS and GaAs processes used for RF amplifiers. Three new reconfigurable LNA topologies are also presented. The first two topologies, based on the common-gate stage and synchronous filters, are investigated but not manufactured. The third design, based on the cascode topology, was manufactured in a 0.5 mu m GaAs process with enhancement-mode and depletion-mode pHEMTs. The LNA features 12.7 dB, 13.6 dB, and 13.9 dB of gain and noise figures of 2.7 dB, 3.5 dB, and 4.2 dB at 2.5, 3.6 and 5.8 GHz, respectively. The LNA draws 41 mA from a 3.3 V supply.

Users show high interest in multifunctional devices that can provide different kinds of services for exchanging information. Therefore, new wireless communication standards are introduced to satisfy the user’s needs. Radio Frequency (RF) circuits such as Low Noise Amplifiers (LNA) are classically designed to operate at a single frequency band. With increasing demands for new wireless standards, wireless communication devices are required to have a dedicated RF circuit for each application. In order to reduce the occupied real estate and power consumption of the electronic circuits, it is recommended to replace parallel architectures that are used to provide multi-standard receivers by one architecture that is able to operate over multiple frequency bands. The LNA is one of the components in RF circuits that can be redesigned to operate over a wider frequency range. This thesis proposes a frequency-reconfigurable narrow-band LNA based on inductively degenerated configuration topology whose frequency of operation has beed varied by changing the capacitance value of the Radio Frequency Micro Electro-Mechanical System-Complementary Metal-Oxide Semiconductor (RF MEMS-CMOS) varactor. A novel RF MEMS-CMOS varactor design with 89% tuning range with a minimum capacitance of 1 pF and a maximum capacitance of 2 pF is designed in 180 nm CMOS technology from Taiwan’s Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) to be used in the LNA in order to achieve reconfigurability. The LNA was designed in 180 nm CMOS technology using an IBM process. The simulation results of the designed reconfigurable narrow-band LNA show a gain of 12 dB and a return loss of less than −20 dB over the tuning range from 800 MHz to 1100 MHz. Moreover, the LNA remains stable and obtaines the noise figure of less than 1 dB over the desired frequency range."--Abstract.

Book excerpt: Mobile devices are widely used for a vast range of applications such as mobile phones, personal digital assistant, personal computers, video games console, etc. However, the performance of these devices is restricted by the support of the network and the mobile functionality and efficiency. Current applications require high data rates and global mobility which can be satisfied with the co-existence and handover between newly developed third generation (3G) or Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS) standard and current second generation (2G) standards including: Global Standards for Mobile (GSM), Digital Cellular System (DCS), and Personal Communication Systems (PCS). Therefore, recent research in wireless communication has shifted towards achieving a multi-standard terminal, which can support efficiently multiple standards including GSM/DCS/PCS/3G.

Book excerpt: Abstract: The global market of mobile and wireless communications is witnessing explosive growth in size as well as radical changes. Third generation (3G) wireless systems have recently been deployed and some are still in the process. 3G wireless systems promise integration of voice and data communications with higher data rates and a superior quality of service compared to second generation systems. Unfortunately, more and more communication standards continue to be developed which ultimately requires specific RF/MW and baseband communication integrated circuits that are designed for functionality and compatibility with a specific type of network. Although communication devices such as cellular phones integrate different services such as voice, Bluetooth, GPS, and WLAN, each service requires its own dedicated radio transceiver which results in high power consumption and larger PCB area usage. With the rapid advances in silicon CMOS integrated circuit technology combined with extensive research, a global solution which aims at introducing a global communication system that encompasses all communication standards appears to be emerging. State of the art CMOS technology not only has the capability of operation in the GHz range, but it also provides the advantage of low cost and high level of integration. These features propel CMOS technology as the ideal candidate for current trends, which currently aim to integrate more RF/MW circuits on the same chip. Armed with such technology ideas such as software radio look more attainable than they ever were in the past. Unfortunately, realizing true software radio for mobile applications still remains a tremendous challenge since it requires a high sampling rate and a wide-bandwidth Analog-to-Digital converter which is extremely power hungry and not suitable for battery operated mobile devices. Another approach to realize a flexible and reconfigurable RF/MW transceiver that could operate in a diverse mobile environment and provides a multiband and multistandard solution. The work presented in this thesis focuses on the design of an integrated and tunable low-noise amplifier as part of software defined radio (SDR).

Book excerpt: Low Power Consumption is one of the critical issues in the performance of small battery-powered handheld devices. Mobile terminals feature an ever increasing number of wireless communication alternatives including GPS, Bluetooth, GSM, 3G, WiFi or DVB-H. Considering that the total power available for each terminal is limited by the relatively slow increase in battery performance expected in the near future, the need for efficient circuits is now critical. This book presents the basic techniques available to design low power RF CMOS analogue circuits. It gives circuit designers a complete guide of alternatives to optimize power consumption and explains the application of these rules in the most common RF building blocks: LNA, mixers and PLLs. It is set out using practical examples and offers a unique perspective as it targets designers working within the standard CMOS process and all the limitations inherent in these technologies.
