Some of them find love to cause chaos, and others simply try to get away with murder. Amar lowers our hands, removing the gun from my grasp and he waits for Vanko to re-enter the room, passing him the murder weapon to dispose of. I feel Amar turn away from me and I turn to face him, wrapping my hand around his arm. When he comes to a halt and looks down at my hand, "What now?" I ask him. "You are free to leave." He says as he elevates his gaze to mine, staring me directly in the eyes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The orientalist Karl Sussheim kept his Diary in Turkish - and later in Arabic - from his early years in the Ottoman Empire through the Young Turk Revolution of 1908 and after his return to Germany, through war, revolution, and the horrors of Nazi rule. This book presents selected episodes in translation from the surviving parts of Sussheim's Diary, covering the years 1908 to 1940. In its detached style it allows the reader a remarkable insight into Sussheim's family surroundings, his academic career at Munich University, and the eventful times he lived through. Flemming and Schmidt aim at providing at once an intimate impression of, and a monument to, one of the great diarists of the last century. To illuminate the issues for a broad range of readers, the selected texts from the Diary are situated against the background of contemporary events and fully annotated. FAZ aFlemming and Schmidt have done a remarkable job and the resulting work presents a valuable historical source.o Jahrbuch fur Europaische Uberseegeschichte "There is more, much more, in this impeccably researched and translated work than can be mentioned in the space of a short review." Dreiser was initially invited to Moscow for a week-long observance of the tenth anniversary of the October Revolution. He asked, and was granted, permission to make an extended tour of the country. This previously unpublished diary is a firsthand record of life in the USSR during the 1920s as seen by a leading American cultural figure. It is a valuable primary source, surely among the last from this period of modern history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many aspire to serve with the Special Air Service, arguably the world’s most prestigious regiment, but few achieve their aim. In this inspiring memoir the author describes how he left school without any qualifications and embarked on a 30 year career much of it spent in Hereford, including four years in ‘The Regiment’. Against the odds he rose through the ranks before being commissioned and eventually retiring as a Major. Initially attached to 22 SAS as a signaller, he volunteered for and passed ‘Selection’, the most gruelling and demanding of tests. He was posted to D Squadron Boat Troop with whom he saw active service in the Falklands War, Northern Ireland and the UK counter-terrorist team. Thanks to the diary he kept during the Falklands War, the reader is treated to a gripping first-hand account of the intense action that he and his colleagues experienced, including recces, diversionary attacks, raids and ambushes both on South Georgia and the Falklands Islands. Later he commanded the Royal Signals troop supporting D Squadron, 22 SAS before commissioning and later on pursuing a second career as a security consultant in various Middle Eastern hotspots. It is a privilege to read this commendably modest account of one man’s unique career which provides a fascinating insight into elite special forces soldiering.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a poet, author, and keen observer of life in 1870s Boston, Harriet Robinson played an essential - if occasionally underappreciated - role in the women's suffrage movement during Boston's golden age. Robinson flourished after leaving behind her humble roots in the mill town of Lowell, Massachusetts, deciding to spend a year in Boston discovering the culture and politics of America's Athens. An honest, bright, and perceptive witness, she meets with Emerson and Julia Ward Howe, with whom she organizes the New England Women's Club, and drinks deeply of the city's artistic and cultural offerings. Noted historian Claudia L. Bushman proves a wonderful guide as she weaves together Robinson's journal entries, her own learned commentary, and selections from other nineteenth-century writers to reveal the impact of the industrial revolution and the rise of women's suffrage as seen through the experience of one articulate, engaged participant. Going to Boston will appeal to readers interested in both the history of Boston and the history of American progress itself.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 1930s in the United States, the Works Progress Administration developed the Federal Writers’ Project to support writers and artists while making a national effort to document the country’s shared history and culture. The American Guide series consists of individual guides to each of the states. Little-known authors—many of whom would later become celebrated literary figures—were commissioned to write these important books. John Steinbeck, Saul Bellow, Zora Neale Hurston, and Ralph Ellison are among the more than 6,000 writers, editors, historians, and researchers who documented this celebration of local histories. Photographs, drawings, driving tours, detailed descriptions of towns, and rich cultural details exhibit each state’s unique flavor. Published in 1941, the WPA Guide to Michigan documents the rich history and economies of the Great Lake State. From the Upper Peninsula to the Lower, and the Straits of Mackinac between, the guide features many photographs of the distinctive geography as well as essays about marine lore, architecture, and—in the essay on Detroit—the nation’s burgeoning auto industry.
