Book Synopsis After Cloven Tongues of Fire by : David A. Hollinger
Download or read book After Cloven Tongues of Fire written by David A. Hollinger and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2013-04-21 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The important role of liberal ecumenical Protestantism in American history The role of liberalized, ecumenical Protestantism in American history has too often been obscured by the more flamboyant and orthodox versions of the faith that oppose evolution, embrace narrow conceptions of family values, and continue to insist that the United States should be understood as a Christian nation. In this book, one of our preeminent scholars of American intellectual history examines how liberal Protestant thinkers struggled to embrace modernity, even at the cost of yielding much of the symbolic capital of Christianity to more conservative, evangelical communities of faith. If religion is not simply a private concern, but a potential basis for public policy and a national culture, does this mean that religious ideas can be subject to the same kind of robust public debate normally given to ideas about race, gender, and the economy? Or is there something special about religious ideas that invites a suspension of critical discussion? These essays, collected here for the first time, demonstrate that the critical discussion of religious ideas has been central to the process by which Protestantism has been liberalized throughout the history of the United States, and shed light on the complex relationship between religion and politics in contemporary American life. After Cloven Tongues of Fire brings together in one volume David Hollinger's most influential writings on ecumenical Protestantism. The book features an informative general introduction as well as concise introductions to each essay.

When the eccentric father of 10-year-old Conrad shows him an implant aliens once put in his leg, Conrad steals it and runs away from home. Enlisting help from his Indian friend Tomahawk Joe, Conrad makes for a haunted cave in the forest. His dramatic adventures there mark the end of his childhood, as the military police, the local sheriff and a cloaked, masked figure get increasingly tangled with Conrad's weird, wonderful family. When Conrad is 13, events take a stranger and darker twist, and Conrad is forced to turn detective, even while the sinister forces that play in the towns and countryside around him become more potent, and the people he thought he could trust are the ones he must beware. Conrad, the mixed-race son of a lovable crazy and a wise woman from the South, grows up fast in a country gripped by fear of the Russians and of alien invasion. This is a novel to be enjoyed by teens, and savoured by adults who appreciate a multi-level adventure story with dashes of fantasy, sci-fi and murder.

Book excerpt: What if the key to changing your life--and yourself--is already in your hand? So many women struggle with what to do with their daily lives. They feel trapped in everyday drudgery and disappointment, in dull domestic duties, and in mundane jobs they despise. Where is the abundant, purposeful life they were promised? Kari Patterson shows readers the truth: in each unremarkable life lies an opportunity to see, know, love, and be utterly transformed by a God who meets everyone right where they are. Instead of stepping away from real life to find God, Patterson equips women with a six-step practice to move further in and meet Him in the humdrum moments of everyday existence. And when a woman's inner being is truly changed by the sacred, everything in her world changes too--right down to tackling the dirty dishes. Through entertaining narrative, candid real-life stories, Bible study, and practical instruction, Sacred Mundane guides individuals or small groups to discover the beautiful sacredness in the lives they already lead. Women who long to grow in God and make a real difference in the world--no matter how small--will reach eagerly for this book and the radical transformation it offers. "Our daily routine, with its mundane tasks and mindless repetition, is ultimately an offering of worship to God. What a great truth from a great God!" --Ann Byle, author of The Making of a Christian Bestseller and coauthor of Devotions for the Soul Surfer

Download or read book Cloven Country written by Jeremy Harte and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2023-08-25 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now in paperback, an exploration of the myths of England’s deceptively bucolic rolling hills and country lanes believed to be created and shaped by the Dark Lord himself. According to legend, the English landscape—so calm on the surface—is really the Devil’s work. Cloven Country tells of rocks hurled into place and valleys carved out by infernal labor. The Devil’s hideous strength laid down great roads in one night and left scars everywhere as the hard stone melted like wax under those burning feet. With roots in medieval folklore of giants and spirits, this is not the Satan of prayer, but a clumsy ogre, easily fooled by humankind. When a smart cobbler or cunning young wife outwitted him, they struck a blow for the underdog. Only the wicked squire and grasping merchant were beyond redemption, carried off by a black huntsman in the storm. Cloven Country offers a fascinating panorama of these decidedly sinister English tales.
