Odrach wrote in Ukrainian, while living an exile's life in Toronto. This remarkable book is a microcosm of Soviet history, and Odrach provides a first-hand account of events during the Stalinist era that newsreels never covered. It has special value as a sensitive and realistic portrait of the times, while capturing the internal drama of the characters with psychological concision. Odrach creates a powerful and moving picture, and manages to show what life was really like under the brutal dictatorship of Stalin, and brings cataclysmic events of history to a human scale.

Book excerpt: This is Jay Hulme's first published collection of poetry. It showcases his unique voice and form of expression. The poems have been carefully selected to chart Jay's journey from growing up in a working-class family in Leicestershire to his feelings and thoughts about school life and his experience as a transgender teenager. As Jay says himself: When it was decided that this collection would be for teenagers I was left with this determination, that this collection wouldn't speak down to anyone, that the world I portrayed within it would be the world we live in, that there would be no attempt to make reality 'appropriate for children'. People seem to forget that teenagers live in the same world as everyone else, and they face the same struggles adults face every day. Teenagers deal with racism and sexism and disability and poverty and so much more that we don't even see. The things that are traditionally seen as inappropriate for young people to see, are so often the same things they experience day to day.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An eloquent and timely plea for understanding refugees. Why are young people leaving their country to walk to the United States to seek a new, safe home? Over 100,000 such children have left Central America. This book of poetry helps us to understand why and what it is like to be them. This powerful book by award-winning Salvadoran poet Jorge Argueta describes the terrible process that leads young people to undertake the extreme hardships and risks involved in the journey to what they hope will be a new life of safety and opportunity. A refugee from El Salvador’s war in the eighties, Argueta was born to explain the tragic choice confronting young Central Americans today who are saying goodbye to everything they know because they fear for their lives. This book brings home their situation and will help young people who are living in safety to understand those who are not. Compelling, timely and eloquent, this book is beautifully illustrated by master artist Alfonso Ruano who also illustrated The Composition, considered one of the 100 Greatest Books for Kids by Scholastic’s Parent and Child Magazine. Book excerpt: Our culture is addicted to weather: hourly forecasts, apps, radio, TV channels, alerts, warnings, and watches. And understandably—our food, clothing, livelihoods, and, increasingly, safety are tied directly to the weather and climate change. In The Big Cloud, photographer Camille Seaman stands in front of tornados, at the edges of lightning storms, and in pelting hail under pitch-black skies to capture supercells and mammatus clouds in their often sublime and terrifying splendor. In these awe-inspiring photographs, Seaman's work is a potent reminder that there is no art more dramatic, in scale or emotion, than that created by nature. Big Cloud includes an introduction by award-winning New Yorker science writer and author Alan Burdick (Out of Eden, Why Time Flies).

Book excerpt: Since ancient times, explorers and adventurers have captured popular imagination with their frightening narratives of travels gone wrong. Usually, these stories heavily feature the exotic or unknown, and can transform any journey into a nightmare. Stories of such horrific happenings have a long and rich history that stretches from folktales to contemporary media narratives. This work presents eighteen essays that explore the ways in which these texts reflect and shape our fear and fascination surrounding travel, posing new questions about the "geographies of evil" and how our notions of "terrible places" and their inhabitants change over time. The volume's five thematic sections offer new insights into how power, privilege, uncanny landscapes, misbegotten quests, hellish commutes and deadly vacations can turn our travels into terror.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is one of those authors whose literary creation is much more famous than the man himself. Those who do know the name Arthur Conan Doyle tend to know him only as the inventor of the world's greatest detective, Sherlock Holmes. A smaller segment of this group goes further and remembers Doyle as the inventor of the great detective who squandered his fame with crackpot beliefs in faeries and the supernatural. Sadly, there is so much more to the man who revolutionized the writing not just of detective fiction but also of the genre of horror, the supernatural, and even influenced history itself. This two volume anthology's point is to put Doyle back on the pedestal he so rightly deserves. Its aim is twofold. First, to introduce readers to Doyle's lesser known (yet no less important) works. These works speak for themselves in showing a master writer at his craft. The stories are timeless, enjoyable, and hopefully will lead to new fans embracing a great author's somewhat forgotten tales. The second aim is to show the relevance of Doyle's works. Through a collection of articles written by current scholars and experts, readers can see just how revolutionary Doyle's writings remain even today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roman and Elsbone were veteran animal trappers and hunters. They were warned by the Chalukyas tribesmen that the Devil Dogs were ferocious and did not fear man or any other animal. The hunters were experienced predators and huntsmen and knew that the wild beast that the tribesmen were leery of were just Himalayan tempestuous wolves. The Chalukyas tribesmen disclosed to the hunters that they had seen two Devil Dogs bring down a huge wild boar and tear it apart one evening at the base of the Mahila Mountains. It is known amongst hunters and wildlife individuals that no wild animal/beasts or man want any part of the violent desolate fierce boars; these Devil Dogs were fearsome and vicious. The major deciding factors that finally made the huntsmen want to seek and capture the wolves were these main issues: One, the Los Angeles zoo was offering a large amount of money for two legendary Devil Dogs from India. The second aspect was they heard that a single Devil Dog had fought and killed a Siberian Tiger; this factor increased their inquisitiveness and curiosity of this sensational beast and its folklore. Their egos also played a part in their judgment to capture the animals An element they had to contemplate and had caused them concern was that they were told that the beast only come out after the sun has set. Nightfall, this is an advantageous factor for the nighttime predator. So these beasts were nocturnal hunters; this was not an odd characteristic for any wolf, but still it was a concern for the hunters. All these tidbits of information just enticed Roman and Elsbone even more, and it heightened their hunting and ego desires. The two English veteran hunters were now traveling toward their prey and compensations as they were now heading toward the foothills of the snowcapped Himalayas, the hunting grounds of the Devil Dogs. The huntsmen eventually had left their regular and familiar stomping grounds of South Africa years earlier because of the civil turmoil that continues to cause chaos and havoc with many of the unsettled tribes and conformed city dwellers. The other object and issue was now there are all the new restrictions and hunting laws causing hardship on hunters and trappers, also there were the conservation laws protecting the wild beast limiting them even more. Elsbone and Roman left Africa and went and took their trade to South America. But after some time, they grew tired of the humid atmosphere, the different language, and customs along with the constant damp eerie rain forest. So now they were here in India following the harsh rumors of the ferocious wild Devil Dogs that killed cattle, pigs, and villagers and nowthey also heardeven killed mountain lions. The hunters journey did have some hardships. They needed to travel far through hot rough desolate deserts with very cold nights.
