Book excerpt: Weather Analysis and Forecasting: Applying Satellite Water Vapor Imagery and Potential Vorticity Analysis, Second Edition, is a step-by-step essential training manual for forecasters in meteorological services worldwide, and a valuable text for graduate students in atmospheric physics and satellite meteorology. In this practical guide, P. Santurette, C.G. Georgiev, and K. Maynard show how to interpret water vapor patterns in terms of dynamical processes in the atmosphere and their relation to diagnostics available from numerical weather prediction models. In particular, they concentrate on the close relationship between satellite imagery and the potential vorticity fields in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere. These applications are illustrated with color images based on real meteorological situations over mid-latitudes, subtropical and tropical areas. - Presents interpretation of the water vapor channels 6.2 and 7.3μm as well as advances based on satellite data to improve understanding of atmospheric thermodynamics - Improves by new schemes the understanding of upper-level dynamics, midlatitudes cyclogenesis and fronts over various geographical areas - Provides analysis of deep convective phenomena to better understand the development of strong thunderstorms and to improve forecasting of severe convective events - Includes efficient operational forecasting methods for interpretation of data from NWP models - Offers information on satellite water vapor images and potential vorticity fields to analyse and forecast convective phenomena and thunderstorms

Book excerpt: A computer-based processor for satellite imagery was tested on samples of DMSP visible and IR imagery data smoothed to 0.6 n mi resolution. The data were displayed on the AFGL Man-computer Interactive Data Access System so that meteorologists could label small areas (25 x 25 n mi) with one of nine possible cloud categories from the AF 3D Nephanalysis Program (3DNEPH). The computer-based processor labeled the same areas by computing a two-dimensional fast Fourier transform (FFT) and comparing the results to average wavenumber spectra for the cloud categories. Classification accuracies were 65% for visible, 65% for IR and 81% for combined data. The classification accuracies were appreciably better than chance and a simplified processor which used only the averaged values of satellite data over an area. Accuracies improved is some categories were merged. The results were also compared to a cloud typing procedure in the 3DNEPH and to some earlier studies. The results were generally good for categories with small-scale cloud features such as cumulus or cirrus clouds, but the overall accuracy of classification for all cloud categories was not significantly better than verifications cited in earlier studies. Two potential refinements to the spectral processors, namely, removing the effects of backgrounds such as land, water, and snow cover and minimizing sensitivity to varying fractional cloud cover from case to case, are also discussed. Book excerpt: This report describes the development and testing of an objective technique to forecast cloudiness and precipitation through extrapolation of satellite imagery. By utilizing on objectively determined cloud-motion vector, the technique makes local forecasts of satellite parameters (brightness and IR temperature), with high temporal resolution, using simple linear extrapolation. Algorithms are then used to convert the satellite parameters to total cloud cover, probability of 1-hour precipitation, and presence of low, middle, and high clouds. The test program computed motion vectors and made forecasts out to 7 hours, in half-hour steps, at 30 locations. The program was tested on 12 spring and fall cases, using half-hourly GOES imagery. For periods beyond 2 hours, forecasts of cloud cover and precipitation were markedly better than persistence, which deficiencies in specification hindered short-period performance. Forecasts of cloud layers were worse than persistence due to inadequate specification algorithms. The net results were quite encouraging, and further refinements and developments are planned.

Book excerpt: This report reviews the work reported earlier in AFGL-TR-76-0170, Cloud Distributions as Indicators of Tropical Storm Displacement, by the same author, on the application of composite cloud imagery to the forecasting of tropical storm motion. Several additional techniques that were tested briefly for application to typhoon specification and forecasting are discussed and evaluated. Animations of 12-hour infrared images did not suggest anything useful within the limited time available for analysis. The technique, however, should be comprehensively tested with data of better time and spatial resolution. Infrared composites appeared to be less useful than visual composites. The increased detectability of thin cirrus clouds in the infrared masked the significant cloud features. An attempt to duplicate Dvorak's relationships between peak wind speed and the central and banding features of typhoons by compositing storms of similar intensity failed. The fine details Dvorak could distinguish in individual storms were destroyed by the compositing process. Objective analysis of satellite imagery of typhoons is seriously handicapped by the limited archive of digital data. (Author).

Book excerpt: A quasi-objective method for deriving 500-mb geopotential heights with the aid of satellite cloud observations is presented. The method uses satellite-observed cloud patterns in conjunction with a forecast 500-mb height field which is separated into additive short- and long-wave component fields. Empirical relationships between the cloud patterns and the short-wave component field are used to modify the pattern of the latter, and regression equations are used to specify extrema values. The 500-mb heights are retrieved by the direct addition of the modified short-wavelength field to the long-wavelength field. Procedures for using this method operationally are presented, and results of real-time modifications can contribute to significant improvements in the analysis.
