Book excerpt: Remote sensing is the acquisition of information of an object or phenomenon, by the use of either recording or real-time sensing device(s), that is not in physical or intimate contact with the object (such as by way of aircraft, spacecraft, satellite, buoy, or ship). In practice, remote sensing is the stand-off collection through the use of a variety of devices for gathering information on a given object or area. Human existence is dependent on our ability to understand, utilize, manage and maintain the environment we live in - Geoscience is the science that seeks to achieve these goals. This book is a collection of contributions from world-class scientists, engineers and educators engaged in the fields of geoscience and remote sensing.

Book excerpt: An established cloud analysis routine has been modified for use in the Arctic. The separation of clouds from the snow and sea ice backgrounds is accomplished through a multispectral technique which utilizes VHRR channel 2 (visible), channel 3 (near infrared) and channel 4 (infrared) data. The primary means of cloud identification is based on a derived channel 3 reflectance image. At this wavelength, a significant contrast exists between liquid clouds and the arctic backgrounds, unlike in the standard visible and infrared images. The channel 3 reflectance is obtained by first using the channel 4 emission temperature to estimate the thermal emission component of the total channel 3 radiance. This thermal emission component is subsequently removed from the total radiance, leaving only the solar reflectance component available for analysis. Since many ice clouds do not exhibit a substantially greater reflectance is channel 3, the routine exploits differences in transmissive characteristics between channels 3 and 4 for identification. The routine was applied to six case studies which had been analyzed by three independent experts to establish 'ground truth'. Verification of the cloud analysis results, through a comparison to the subjective analyses, yielded impressive statistics. A success rate of 77.9% was obtained with an arguably small data base of 131 undisputed scenes.

Book excerpt: A computer-based processor for satellite imagery was tested on samples of DMSP visible and IR imagery data smoothed to 0.6 n mi resolution. The data were displayed on the AFGL Man-computer Interactive Data Access System so that meteorologists could label small areas (25 x 25 n mi) with one of nine possible cloud categories from the AF 3D Nephanalysis Program (3DNEPH). The computer-based processor labeled the same areas by computing a two-dimensional fast Fourier transform (FFT) and comparing the results to average wavenumber spectra for the cloud categories. Classification accuracies were 65% for visible, 65% for IR and 81% for combined data. The classification accuracies were appreciably better than chance and a simplified processor which used only the averaged values of satellite data over an area. Accuracies improved is some categories were merged. The results were also compared to a cloud typing procedure in the 3DNEPH and to some earlier studies. The results were generally good for categories with small-scale cloud features such as cumulus or cirrus clouds, but the overall accuracy of classification for all cloud categories was not significantly better than verifications cited in earlier studies. Two potential refinements to the spectral processors, namely, removing the effects of backgrounds such as land, water, and snow cover and minimizing sensitivity to varying fractional cloud cover from case to case, are also discussed. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An evaluation of the Satellite Data Processing and Display System automated cloud and precipitation intensity analysis program is presented. The program uses the Geostationary Observational Environmental Satellite visual and infrared imagery to produce contoured digital displays of cloud amount, cloud type, cloud-top temperature, cloud-top height and precipitation intensity for an approximate 1024 x 1024 n mi area centered at 35 deg N 80 deg W. Verification consists of correlating surface and upper-air observations, pilot reports, automated radar summaries and a manual analysis of the satellite imagery to the contoured digital display from the automated cloud analysis program for five cases during the summer 1983. The test results indicate considerable skill, particularly for cloud amount, cloud-top temperature and cloud-top height. The cloud type and precipitation intensity results were generally consistent but further testing is required to refine the thresholds and the standard deviation values for discrimination of particular cloud types.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new approach to the analysis of satellite imagery is presented. The central part of this approach is an algorithm which compresses information stored in the ordinary six or eight bits per picture element into only one bit. The quality of this compression is demonstrated by examples of its application to high resolution visual imagery. Both visual inspection and rms difference criterion are used for this evaluation. There are four objectives of this report which are: to review the status of processing techniques which remove redundant information, to show the need for redundance reduction in the processing of satellite images, to present the development of an algorithm for reducing it, and to show results obtained by application of the algorithm to visual imagery. Also, comments are made on needed developments of the technique and its potential application to problems of analysis of satellite imagery data. (Author).

Book excerpt: In a rapidly changing world, there is an ever-increasing need to monitor the Earth’s resources and manage it sustainably for future generations. Earth observation from satellites is critical to provide information required for informed and timely decision making in this regard. Satellite-based earth observation has advanced rapidly over the last 50 years, and there is a plethora of satellite sensors imaging the Earth at finer spatial and spectral resolutions as well as high temporal resolutions. The amount of data available for any single location on the Earth is now at the petabyte-scale. An ever-increasing capacity and computing power is needed to handle such large datasets. The Google Earth Engine (GEE) is a cloud-based computing platform that was established by Google to support such data processing. This facility allows for the storage, processing and analysis of spatial data using centralized high-power computing resources, allowing scientists, researchers, hobbyists and anyone else interested in such fields to mine this data and understand the changes occurring on the Earth’s surface. This book presents research that applies the Google Earth Engine in mining, storing, retrieving and processing spatial data for a variety of applications that include vegetation monitoring, cropland mapping, ecosystem assessment, and gross primary productivity, among others. Datasets used range from coarse spatial resolution data, such as MODIS, to medium resolution datasets (Worldview -2), and the studies cover the entire globe at varying spatial and temporal scales.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A horizontal differencing bi-spectral technique has been developed which includes an iteration scheme for reducing errors in computed cloud amount. The technique requires that cloud surfaces over the area of application be horizontally homogeneous, and as developed, assumes that the observed maximum and minimum brightness counts represent cloud and clear filled resolution points respectively. These values are then used to normalize the data in computing total cloud amount. The computed results of the horizontal differencing bi-spectral method, as applied to real data sets, have been compared to the results obtained from a modified frequency distribution method and the general bi-spectral method. The results of this comparative analysis indicate that the computed cloud amounts of the horizontal differencing method are less variable than for the frequency distribution and general bi-spectral methods, and are thus better suited for objective analyses. The computed cloud temperatures of the horizontal differencing method were also shown to be more realistic than those computed by the general bi-spectral method.
