Book excerpt: Abstract: The purpose of the study was to investigate the importance of color as a design element in clothing, color preferences of elderly women for clothes, including values and intensities, and the relation between color preferences and a) self-concept and b) clothing interest. The questionnaire included a modification of Cave's (1965) Color Questionnaire, Mason's (1954b) Self-Concept Questionnaire, and an adaptation of Sharpe's (1963) Clothing Interest/Importance Measure. Data of the participants age and color preferences during youth and middle age were also obtained. The sample was composed of 111 women 65 years of age and over from five independent living retirement homes in Columbus, Ohio. Frequency counts, percentages, central tendencies, and analysis of variance were used to analyze the data. The elderly women in the sample ranked style first and color second as clothing characteristics noticed when shopping. Blue was the preferred color of clothing along with a light, bright value/chroma combination. Red was the second preferred hue. Blue was the preferred hue for a dressy dress and casual dress for spring or summer and for a dressy dress for autumn or winter. Blue tied with red as the preferred color for a pantsuit or casual outfit for autumn or winter. Blue was found to be the preferred color during the participants' youth and middle age. Red was the second preferred hue during youth and middle age. No differences were found between color preferences and a) self-concept and b) clothing interest.

Book excerpt: Discover the diverse ways aging women attempt to deal with the universal challenges of loss, sickness, and death along with the problems of being old women in a society that values women mainly as sexual partners or producers of children. Old women are often seen as poor, powerless, and pitiful in our sexist and youth-oriented society. The truth is that women age much more successfully than do men and they are increasingly in the majority as our population ages. These truths and others are presented in Faces of Women and Aging--a collection written by women, a number of whom are themselves older women who bring their unique life experiences and personalities to the topic. This uplifting book emphasizes that middle and old age are merely stages of growth and development, not just seasons of loss and decline as the end approaches. A wealth of topics are covered in Faces of Women and Aging that broaden the reader’s awareness of the problems of women and aging including: how to maintain self-esteem in the face of sexism, ageism, and severe illness the problems of being single or divorced in the later years the problems of maintaining a good body image for older women in a society which values the young and the beautiful the additional difficulties of minority women, specifically lesbians and native American women increased dependency brought on by illness and loss of partners Faces of Women and Aging combines personal narratives that serve as reminders of the human beings behind statistics and case studies with theoretical observations which help therapists assist older women cope with the daily hardships as well as the more catastrophic problems of aging.

Download or read book Women and Aging written by Varda Muhlbauer and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-10-20 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These are paradoxical times to be an older woman. As individual older women take the stage as role models in the arts and the public sphere, female elders as a group are marginalized as dependent, declining and unimportant. Women and Aging surveys the evolving sociopolitical landscape in an era still struggling with gender and age discrimination. This insightful volume recasts familiar concepts such as social roles, appearance, health, sexuality and transition through the related lenses of empowerment/restraint and quality of life/well-being for a deeper understanding of the disparities that exist both with men and within their own gender. Two especially relevant questions emerge from this framework: how women over 60 are contributing to the current climate of societal change and how these positive developments can improve the lives of older women as a whole. Featured topics analyze the wider implications of older women's experiences as family members, sensual and sexual beings, drivers of economies and members of a diverse population worldwide: Older women, power and the body. Older women, economic power and consumerism. The impact of multiple roles on older women: Strain or enrichment? Older women, leadership and encore careers. Sexuality in older women: Desirability and desire. Lesbians over 60: Newer every day. Clinical interventions to empower older women. A significant advance in femi nist research, Women and Aging brings path-breaking perspectives to scholars in women’s studies, gerontology, psychology, sociology, social work and human development, whether they study women who have overcome barriers or those who need support in changing the rules.
