Book excerpt: Self-esteem may also be an antecedent to fashion opinion leadership or seeking (Cash et al., 2003). Dress may improve one's feelings about oneself in those with low self-esteem, while for those with high self-esteem, clothing might be used as a visual demonstration of a positive self-concept (Creekmore, 1974; Joung & Miller, 2006).

Book excerpt: Average body mass in many Western cultures is getting larger and yet the fashion system seems mostly unchanged. Major fashion houses still limit their output to small sizes and the dominant ideal of the female body in fashion imagery is still thin – dangerously thin according to World Health Organization standards. Why is the industry forfeiting a considerable share of the market in the form of plus-size consumers, seemingly against its commercial interests? Why does the thin ideal reign supreme despite damning evidence of its harm to women? And is there a way out of this system of thin ideals and segregated fat bodies? In this original study, Paolo Volonté answers these questions and more, drawing on influential literature on the body, beauty standards and the roles of clothing in society. He reveals some surprising factors behind the perpetuation of the thin ideal such as the precedent of thin models and the introduction of standardised sizing for mass-manufactured clothing. He also revisits less surprising factors such as the attitudes of designers and consumers towards the female body, and notions of 'perfection'. By critically analysing these factors, Volonté reveals why plus-size fashion is often characterised by 'low aesthetic commitment' and low quality marketing. He explores the nature of the segregation of fat bodies in fashion and considers what the future may hold for consumers, designers and marketers alike.

The significance of this research relates to the serious risk factors as a result of body dissatisfaction, including low self esteem, depression, eating disorders and obesity. Literature on the psychological effects of social media on perception of body satisfaction is lacking for the collegiate female athlete population. This mixed-methods study investigated the amount of time spent on social media in relationship to self-reported body satisfaction scores in collegiate female athletes. One-hundred and two collegiate female athletes were surveyed via an online survey about body satisfaction, time spent on social media, and perceptions of weight and appearance. There was no correlation between the total time spent on social media and reported body satisfaction scores (r = -.16, P= .10). A mediation calculation showed no correlation between participants' perception of their weight and reported body satisfaction scores (Z= 1.17, P= .24, K2= .03). A mediation calculation showed no correlation between participants' reported body satisfaction scores and their perception of appearance in uniform (Z= -.60, P= .55, K2= .02). Six domains emerged from qualitative content analysis: 1) social comparison, 2) body satisfaction in and out of competition, 3) size, appearance and weight, 4) internalization of beauty standards, 5) control of weight, 6) and time. Conclusions from this research suggest that social media is not a strong variable that affects collegiate female athletes' reported body satisfaction.

Book excerpt: Poor body image and low self-esteem have been accepted as factors increasing the risk of the development of eating disorders in women. For decades research was conducted with populations of mostly White women focusing little on other races. The recent attention to ethnic differences in body image and self-esteem have not provided consistent results. With the shift in the definition of beauty in the United States that is more inclusive of differing ethnicities and body shapes prior conclusions may be invalidated. This study examined the self-esteem and body perception of Black, White, Hispanic, and Asian women at a small college. A relationship was found between self-esteem and body satisfaction independent of ethnicity. Black women were found to have the highest self-esteem and to be more satisfied with their bodies than any other group yet their mean body mass index is considered to be overweight.

Book excerpt: Winner of the Reader Views Literary Award, Societal Issues and the Reviewers Choice Best Non-fiction Book of the Year, Specialty Awards, Schooled on Fat explores how body image, social status, fat stigma and teasing, food consumption behaviors, and exercise practices intersect in the daily lives of adolescent girls and boys. Based on nine months of fieldwork at a high school located near Tucson, Arizona, the book draws on social, linguistic, and theoretical contexts to illustrate how teens navigate the fraught realities of body image within a high school culture that reinforced widespread beliefs about body size as a matter of personal responsibility while offering limited opportunity to exercise and an abundance of fattening junk foods. Taylor also traces policy efforts to illustrate where we are as a nation in addressing childhood obesity and offers practical strategies schools and parents can use to promote teen wellness. This book is ideal for courses on the body, fat studies, gender studies, language and culture, school culture and policy, public ethnography, deviance, and youth culture.

Book excerpt: In this collection of original personal essays and posts from her blog Stellar Fashion & Fitness, Jennifer King weaves coming-of-age stories into lessons on how to boost your self-esteem with the three things that have made a direct impact on her own confidence: fashion, fitness and body positivity. King explores her relationship with her body, fashion, food and exercise, as well as what media messages do to shape those feelings. She delves into how others' perceptions of her body either reinforce or tear down a healthy image, hoping to inspire others to boost their self-love from the outside in - and the inside out. As the blogger behind Stellar Fashion & Fitness, King brings 16 years of professional writing and editing to the site, along with a catalog of life experiences, a passion for fashion, and an energetic pursuit of health and happiness, recognizing that the two aren't mutually exclusive. When she's not helping friends shop for special occasions or racking up miles walking or running, you can find her exploring her home of Birmingham, Alabama, and watching comic book superhero movies with her husband, Jermaine.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Societal norms have placed large burdens on how women perceive themselves, and how they want others to perceive them. This has led to some distressing statistics, with up to 10 percent of college-aged women in the United States suffering from an eating disorder. While individual women can focus on cultivating a healthy body image, it is important for young women to analyze how the media and others encourage unhealthy perceptions of what women's bodies are supposed to look like. A glossary, a "For More Information" section, and additional avenues of research are provided to guide readers to better understand the importance of a healthy female body image.

Book excerpt: The current study was conducted to determine if differences between Caucasian and African American women's self-esteem; body image satisfaction, and self- perception relative to body mass index scores (BMI) would disappear when SES, and urbanicity are taken into consideration. Sixty-five Caucasian and 47 African American female students from a midsize university in East Texas volunteered to participate in the study. All volunteers were unmarried and ranged in age from 18 to 25 years. Participants completed several measures: The Multidimensional Body Self-Relations Questionnaire (Cash, 2000a) and Body-image Questionnaire (Cash, 2000b), Self-Perception Profile for College Students (Neeman & Harter, 1986), Hollingshead Four Factor Index of Social Status, and a demographic data sheet. Participants' actual weight, ideal weight, and height were obtained in order to compute their BMI. For the most part, the study hypotheses were supported. Specifically, African Americans reported greater scores in the majority of domains of self-esteem, body image satisfaction, and self-perception than their Caucasian counterparts. However, when SES and urbanicity were introduced as covariates, these differences disappeared for a large number of domains. Implications for future research and possible application of these findings are discussed.

Book excerpt: This study explored the relationship between fitspiration use and body satisfaction in college age women. As a quantitative exploratory study, a sample of 25 people participated in a survey, answering nominal questions about their fitspiration use, exercise habits, and attitudes toward exercise, dieting behaviors, body image, and self- esteem. A non-probability convenience sample was used. Participants reported various different attitudes toward exercise and their bodies. Using chi-square tests, the study found that there is no evidence to suggest that the regular viewing of fitspiration has a detrimental effect on body satisfaction in college age women, but that college age women remain vulnerable to negative body image. This study demonstrates the need for further research into the topic of fitspiration as well as the need for social workers to fully understand the challenges to health and wellness their clients may face. Implications for social work practice and policy are discussed.

This book was released on 2006 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A great deal of research has sought to demonstrate a relation between exposure to thin-ideal media images and body-image disturbance among women. Many of these studies have found that exposure to thin-ideal images has either an adverse main effect on self perceptions or an interactive effect with pre-existing body-image disturbance, such that individuals with pre-existing body image disturbance experience adverse effects of these images. However, women are also frequently exposed to thin others through their interactions with peers, but relatively little research has examined the effects of exposure to thin peers on body dissatisfaction. Furthermore, closer examination of the literature reveals inconsistent effects of exposure to thin-ideal fashion models both across and within studies. The purpose of this series of studies was to demonstrate that young women who are concerned about their weight will use information about a peer's weight to evaluate themselves and that, in general, social comparisons of body weight with thin peers have a more negative impact than comparisons with fashion models because peers are more similar and therefore more relevant for self-evaluation. Studies 1 and 2 aimed to demonstrate that information about a peer's weight is used to determine self-evaluation among young women who are concerned about their body weight. Studies 3 and 4 directly compared the effects of exposure to thin and attractive fashion models and peers with the aim of demonstrating that young women are more adversely affected by thin and attractive peers than fashion models. The results of study 1 showed negative effects of exposure to a peer's weight on body dissatisfaction and appearance state self-esteem among restrained eaters. The subsequent two studies failed to detect a negative impact of exposure to information about a peer's weight. However, study 4 found that for participants with low trait appearance self-esteem only, exposure to a thin and attractive peer resulted in lower global state self-esteem. Exposure to thin peers does not appear to have consistent negative effects on young women. The effects of exposure to thin peers appear to be similar to the effects of exposure to thin fashion models---in that the effects are inconsistent.
