Book excerpt: This book gathers contributions to the 20th biannual symposium of the German Aerospace Aerodynamics Association (STAB) and the German Society for Aeronautics and Astronautics (DGLR). The individual chapters reflect ongoing research conducted by the STAB members in the field of numerical and experimental fluid mechanics and aerodynamics, mainly for (but not limited to) aerospace applications, and cover both nationally and EC-funded projects. Special emphasis is given to collaborative research projects conducted by German scientists and engineers from universities, research-establishments and industries. By addressing a number of cutting-edge applications, together with the relevant physical and mathematics fundamentals, the book provides readers with a comprehensive overview of the current research work in the field. Though the book’s primary emphasis is on the aerospace context, it also addresses further important applications, e.g. in ground transportation and energy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interest in the field of active flow control (AFC) is steadily increasing. In - cent years the number of conferences and special sessions devoted to AFC org- ized by various institutions around the world continuously rises. New advanced courses for AFC are offered by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Ast- nautics (AIAA), the European Research Community on Flow, Turbulence and Combustion (ERCOFTAC), the International Centre for Mechanical Sciences (CISM), the von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics (VKI), to name just a few. New books on AFC are published by prominent colleagues of our field and even a new periodical, the ‘International Journal of Flow Control’, appeared. Despite these many activities in AFC it was felt that a follow-up of the highly successful ‘ACTIVE FLOW CONTROL’ Conference held in Berlin in 2006 was appropriate. As in 2006, ‘ACTIVE FLOW CONTROL II’ consisted only of invited lectures. To sti- late multidisciplinary discussions between experimental, theoretical and numerical fluid dynamics, aerodynamics, turbomachinary, mathematics, control engineering, metrology and computer science parallel sessions were excluded. Unfortunately, not all of the presented papers made it into this volume. As the preparation and printing of a book takes time and as this volume should be available at the conf- ence, the Local Organizing Committee had to set up a very ambitious time sch- ule which could not be met by all contributors.

Book excerpt: This book reports on the latest knowledge concerning critical phenomena arising in fluid-structure interaction due to movement and/or deformation of bodies. The focus of the book is on reporting progress in understanding turbulence and flow control to improve aerodynamic / hydrodynamic performance by reducing drag, increasing lift or thrust and reducing noise under critical conditions that may result in massive separation, strong vortex dynamics, amplification of harmful instabilities (flutter, buffet), and flow -induced vibrations. Theory together with large-scale simulations and experiments have revealed new features of turbulent flow in the boundary layer over bodies and in thin shear layers immediately downstream of separation. New insights into turbulent flow interacting with actively deformable structures, leading to new ways of adapting and controlling the body shape and vibrations to respond to these critical conditions, are investigated. The book covers new features of turbulent flows in boundary layers over wings and in shear layers immediately downstream: studies of natural and artificially generated fluctuations; reduction of noise and drag; and electromechanical conversion topics. Smart actuators as well as how smart designs lead to considerable benefits compared with conventional methods are also extensively discussed. Based on contributions presented at the IUTAM Symposium “Critical Flow Dynamics involving Moving/Deformable Structures with Design applications”, held in June 18-22, 2018, in Santorini, Greece, the book provides readers with extensive information about current theories, methods and challenges in flow and turbulence control, and practical knowledge about how to use this information together with smart and bio-inspired design tools to improve aerodynamic and hydrodynamic design and safety.

Book excerpt: Abstract: A flow control method for minimizing losses in a highly loaded compressor blade was analyzed. Passive and active flow control experiments with vortex generator jets were conducted on a seven blade linear compressor cascade to demonstrate the potential application of passive flow control on a highly loaded blade. Passive flow control vortex generator jets use the pressure distribution generated by air flow over the blade profile to drive jets from the pressure side to the suction side. Active flow control was analyzed by pressuring the blade plenum with an auxiliary compressor unit. Active flow control decreased profile losses by approximately 37% while passive flow control had negligible impact on the profile loss of a highly loaded blade. Passive flow control was able to achieve a jet velocity ratio, jet velocity to upstream velocity, of 0.525. The success of active flow control with a velocity ratio of 0.9 suggests there is potential for passive flow control to be effective. The research presented in this thesis is motivated by the potential savings in the applications of passive flow control in gas turbine axial compressors by increasing the aerodynamic load of each stage. Increased stage loading that is properly controlled can reduce the number of stages required to achieve the desired pressure compression ratio.

Book excerpt: The design of efficient blade profiles for gas turbine compressors can no longer be effectively carried out through the use of correlations of 2D-cascade data. For the description of the real flow field three dimensional effects have to be taken into account. Modern theoretical calculation methods which involve the determination of blade profile pressure distribution and the associated boundary layer parameters, are now becoming accepted practice. However before the engine designer can have confidence in these new methods the predicted performance must be demonstrated to be in good agreement with experimental data. It is the purpose of the work reported in this contribution to present an accurate set of experimental measurements of blade profile pressure distributions and boundary layer parameters under quasi-3D-flow conditions and to compare these with the predicted performance for a high deflection transonic compressor cascade. It is shown that for conditions near minimum loss incidence the agreement between measured and predicted values is achieved to an adequate engineering standard and that the two most important aspects, choking flow and boundary layer separation (H12> 2.8) are well predicted. Also the data presented could be used to further update and improve the current prediction methods.

Book excerpt: Data-driven dynamical systems is a burgeoning field?it connects how measurements of nonlinear dynamical systems and/or complex systems can be used with well-established methods in dynamical systems theory. This is a critically important new direction because the governing equations of many problems under consideration by practitioners in various scientific fields are not typically known. Thus, using data alone to help derive, in an optimal sense, the best dynamical system representation of a given application allows for important new insights. The recently developed dynamic mode decomposition (DMD) is an innovative tool for integrating data with dynamical systems theory. The DMD has deep connections with traditional dynamical systems theory and many recent innovations in compressed sensing and machine learning. Dynamic Mode Decomposition: Data-Driven Modeling of Complex Systems, the first book to address the DMD algorithm, presents a pedagogical and comprehensive approach to all aspects of DMD currently developed or under development; blends theoretical development, example codes, and applications to showcase the theory and its many innovations and uses; highlights the numerous innovations around the DMD algorithm and demonstrates its efficacy using example problems from engineering and the physical and biological sciences; and provides extensive MATLAB code, data for intuitive examples of key methods, and graphical presentations.
