Book excerpt: Excerpt from Clinical Ophthalmology for the General Practitioner When one reflects that probably 95 per cent. Of the cases a general practitioner meets in his daily work are undiagnosable from the text book point of view, the conclusion is forced upon one that it is time a change was made in the authorship of these books. The reason that text-books assume their peculiar features is that disease has been classified on the basis of the pathology of individual organs. The pathological state is not recognised until the disease has advanced so far as to produce a physical sign or until the patient has reached the post-mortem table. As, however, people with impaired health rarely Show these characteristic signs, and then only late in their history, it is manifest that the text-book description can only refer to advanced stages of disease. As the vast majority of people whom a general practitioner sees are people without those physical signs of advanced disease, it can be seen why text-books are so useless. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by ophthalmologists and carefully reviewed by primary care consultants, this new reference provides the primary care physician with exactly the information needed to either diagnose an eye disorder or identify the signs and symptoms to refer the treatment to an ophthalmologist. The text begins with chapters on performing the general examination of the eye and differential diagnosis. Then each region of the eye is covered, first with a discussion of anatomy in order to define any abnormalities, followed by signs and symptoms of various disorders of that region. A treatment plan is then offered, or a recommendation to refer to an ophthalmologist. Hundreds of high-quality, color illustrations are used throughout to aid the reader in arriving at an accurate diagnosis. For ease of access, an easy-to-follow, bulleted format has been used throughout, designed to assist with quick recognition and diagnosis of ophthalmic disorders. Full-color illustrations provide an excellent diagnostic tool. Topics are organized by eye region and/or symptom recognition, further aiding the non-specialist in recognition, diagnosis, and treatment. Chapter authors have been paired with primary care consultants to ensure relevance to the needs of the primary care practitioner.

Book excerpt: Clinical Ophthalmology: Medical and Surgical Approach is being launched as the second edition of Clinical Practice in Ophthalmology. In this challenging intellectual environment “Clinical Ophthalmology: Medical and Surgical Approach” brings together a distinguished group of seventy-one experts and provides a comprehensive text combined with integrated visual reference, in the form of black and white and colored figures. The value of this book lays in the quality and expertise of the text chapter contributors. This text attempts to update the state-of-the-art ophthalmology in a lucid, authoritative and well-illustrated manner. Ten sections encompassing forty-four chapters provide a new insight into the subject. Twenty-one chapters cover new concepts and technological advances in the diagnosis and management of common ophthalmic disorders. Several chapters deal with advances in lens surgery, and several authorities cover new concepts in retinal disease including macular and submacular surgery. Modern concepts in corneal disease, glaucoma, oculoplastics, ocular oncology, infectious and inflammatory diseases, strabismus, trauma, and optic nerve disorders are each presented by experts in ophthalmology. As ophthalmology has become more complex, we are driven to establish higher standards of scientific proof for our treatments and simultaneously to run our practices with greater efficiency to be able to bring the best of high technology to bear on our patients’ problems while being mindful of cost. Ophthalmology is a continuously advancing field. As new technologies are being introduced at a rapid pace, the ophthalmologist must learn their intricacies as one begins to apply them to the treatment of ocular diseases. The adoption of new technology, in turn, brings with it the need to learn new skills and develop new treatment algorithms. Old concepts change and new ideas are plentiful. Everything is difficult before it becomes easy. This book is intended for the experienced ophthalmologists, postgraduates as well as those in training. It is hoped that this book will be sufficiently comprehensive to aid the ophthalmologist in making diagnosis of common ophthalmic conditions as well as in performing competent surgeries. This pragmatic book provides an understanding of ophthalmology, important to the everyday practice. This book will find a meaningful and valued place in the libraries of ophthalmologists, today and in future.
